Title: Need help with model texture!!!
Post by: NeoHunter on August 10, 2001, 06:52:00 pm
Okay. I installed Kazan's POF CS and then extracted and converted the GTF Ares fighter into COB. Then I used 3D Exploration to convert it to 3DS since I got 3D Studio Max R3.

Here's my problem. I import it into 3D Studio Max and I realise there are no textures.

Can somebody help me put the textures on the fighter?

The fighter in 3DS format can be downloaded here.

You have to also extract the textures from the VP file.  Note that TS doesn't use PCX files for textures, so you have to convert them to BMP in order for 3D Exploration to convert to 3DS properly.  If you have the extracted textures (converted to BMP format) in the same directory as the COB file generated by PCS, then 3D Exploration will show the textures properly applied and they will be there when you convert to 3DS  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Oh! So that's what I'm doing wrong! Okay! Thanks! I'll try to extract it with textures again. Thanks a lot. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

By the way, your nick "Eth" reminds me of the Rune words in Diablo 2. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Okay, I tried your method of extracting and converting the model for rendering. I wanted to try on a GTF Ares fighter.

I extracted out the POF model plus the textures into the same folder.

Then I converted the texture into bitmap format. But in the end, this is what I got......

Help!! Must I do something in the POF Constructor or the 3D Exploration programs? Am i missing something here?

I really don't know what it is that you are doing so I can't help you, but it seems like you want a reply, so *spam*

1: Go to "Render" on the top bar.
2: Go to "Materials" on the menu that pops up.
3: See if there's a check or whatever next to "Use default material"
4: If there is click on "Use default material"
5: Click another model and click back to the Ares.

That should work  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Somehow, that didn't work either.

Worse case: I get someone who doesn't have my problem convert some models into 3DS format for me WITH textures on. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

What is it I'm doing wrong here?! Damn!

I have the same pb, I just gave up and asked people to convert models for me (as usual...)

Did you get rid of the debris and LODs? Do you WANT to get rid of the debris and LODs?

If all that doesn't work, you could try removing the thruster flame pieces and applying a UV map.

Title: Need help with model texture!!!
Post by: Eth on August 14, 2001, 05:57:00 pm
Just to make sure I didn't leave out a step, I just extracted the Ares model and textures with VPview32, converted the textures to BMP files, and then converted the POF to COB with PCS.  I opened up the COB with 3D Exploration afterwards and it worked perfectly  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

But, there are a few things that might be at issue.

1) Read Grey Wolf's reply, only instead of checking "use default material", make sure that "use textures" is checked  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)  (the default material is what is used for anything that doesn't have an individual texture specified, which should be nada for a correctly converted model)

2) The converted COB file has all LODs and Debris included.  This means 2 things, you have to extract _all_ the textures for the LODs and thrusters if you leave all of that in the model.  Second, by default all the pieces are shown by 3D Exploration.  UNcheck the lower level LODs and debris to see if the main LOD texture is correct.

3) Within 3D Exploration double check that the texture names were properly converted by 'expanding' the tree for "Herca" (by clicking the '+' next to the name) and then go down and double click on the "herca" mesh shown in the expanding tree.  Go to the materials tab of the properties dialog box that pops up.  It should show 1 material used, "hercbone.bmp"

4) Go down to the materials listing in 3D Exploration and double click on Material 1.  Make sure that it shows the proper texture map when you select the "maps" tab (it won't if for example the path to the texture is wrong or the texture isn't in the same directory as the COB file).

Holler if this doesn't make sense or you need further help (in the latter case only after you have done steps 3 and 4 above  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) )

ps. I only check around sporadically here, so no instant replies...

Yeah. I spent the whole night finding what's wrong, anyhow clicking options here and there and finally found the root of the problem. In a way, even though Grey Wolf didn't tell me everything, he did indirectly guide me in the right direction.

Here's a render of a GTF Myrmidon.
