Title: POF Constructor Suite 0.98.4r
Post by: Kazan on August 08, 2001, 10:00:00 am
I'm going back to using Release configuration, i need some people to hammer at this.. and atleast one on an AMD P-O-S

Situations like this justify my AMD hatred, it's incomplete emulation of the 82x86 instruction set is causing me problems

Write a letter to AMD saying how much you hate their hardware!  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

It's the AllProFSKit link (PCS is a part of it).

Well, in the processing of working on the turrets of a CAP ship, I've run across another bug (at least I think of it as one).

Do the following to see the bug:

1) Create a POF file from a COB of a cap with turrets.

2) Edit the POF file and put in all the firing points.  Also join the arms to the bases of multipart turrets.

3) Save the POF file.  Look at it in ModelView and insure all the turret info is correct.

4) Take the COB file and convert it again using PCS.

5) Now import the extended POF data from the POF file you saved in step 3.

6) Now look at the turret data.  It's FUBAR.

In my case, the cap actually has 20 turrets - of which 7 are multi-part turrets.  However after I import the extended data, I end up with 30 turrets in the POF.  The firing points are not correctly stored for most of them either (from the import).  And yes, the names and subobject numbers are the same between the two files (although really the subobject number shouldn't matter, PCS should really look at the turret names and put the info from Turret01 that the extended POF data is being taken from with Turret01 of the POF it is being imported to).

Other note regarding multi-part turret handling with PCS.  During the initial conversion, the turret arms are not "joined" up with the turret bases, even though both follow the standard naming convention of turretNN and turretarmNN.

I don't think barrels can touch the bases and work safely... but me =  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/spineyes.gif)

the only incomplete ISA implementation in AMD chips is SSE.

None of which addresses the problem with the importing of extended POF data using PCS when the model in question is a capital ship with turrets.  Kaz, could you please look into and address the main problem I raised?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I do note that PCS uses a different naming convention, which explains why the arms are not "automatically" joined with the bases in the turret chunk of the POF during the initial conversion  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)  (Note: the naming convention I have always used is based on how  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/v.gif) did their models)

( don't know how you guys got off on the "can't touch this" subject... there were not any problems with the turrets working... and they do touch  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)  The "joining" refers to the act of mating the base subobject with the arm subobject in the turret chunk of a POF, which has nothing to do with the physical model data )

the importing turret data i thought i had disabled in the first place, until i wrote a newer version of the TGUN/TMIS editor with some 'smart features'

Perchance did you get those 'smart features' implemented yet and get the importing of turret data fixed??
