Title: Generic Personas and Command
Post by: Skullar on August 30, 2005, 07:51:00 am
I think we should replace command and one wingman persona with a computer voice, or a narrator`s voice, thus providing the possibility to replace all generic chatter with this.

So, instead of "Beta wing ready, sir " you hear for example "Message from Beta wing, they are combat ready."

or instead of "Help me, I am under fire !" you hear "Message from friendly craft : They are taking fire."

I think this was done with some X-Wing titles

That was in X-Wing Alliance, but only for the ships with the primary tag.

That can be done manually. But real chatter is much more better than "wingman computer". The command could be replaced with the comp though. And ofcourse add the other races...

Of course there is still plenty of chatter !

This is just a proposal to eliminate unsuitable generic chatter. In a narn vs centauri campaign it isnt appropriate for you wingman to complain about a green-beam-shooting-bonehead in his neck, and when flying within the ranks of the Raiders it isnt appropriate to get commands from general Lefcourt.

I'm not sure of this ship's computer message idea. Probably better to ask for a SCP mod that allows the command persona to be changed in the mission editor. Or disabled :). The command persona is just a pain in the ass half the time.

Good luck. I've been asking for the option to just shut up pilots or command since the SCP started :D

Either you shut up everyone or you shut up no one.

Being able to change command in FRED would be cool though. We really could use more personae.

Well, the computer message thingy is clumsy, I vote for a "narrator"

You can shut up averyone in the Mission Specs editor...

I think repalcing command dude with ship comp would work well. What command tells you is simple things happening around you: Incoming enemys and complaining if you fly away. I think those are exactly the kind of things a ship comp would tell you about. And its easy to make. New compy voice and modify the msg.tbl with better lines suited for the ship computer. I could replace command myself if I just had a microphone...

But I have no idea how "narrator" would work.
You mean like: "Then, suddenly, new enemies arrived!" :p

That's what I was refering to when I said you could shut everyone up :D

Personally I think that a mission specs box is far too limited. You should be able to shut up pilots individually, for all friendies or just command on their own using SEXPs so you can simulate damage, jamming and other such interesting things.

I've got a simple way to make personas that are more appropriate for specific campaigns.  Basically, for each campaign that requires a different set, create a mod directory that only has a messages table and the voicefiles to support it.  Granted, using a mod directory with TBP requires that it be activated manually by custom command line argument.

You don't need to do anything that complicated. The wingman for a particular ship can be set in FRED. So you can put Narn wingmen in your Frazis and Minbari wingmen in your Nials. The only exception to the rule is the "command" persona. Which cannot be changed.

Then send in the text and voice without any video and type "Command: "in front of the message.

In the show there was shown that at least the Nials and Starfurys get their orders only audio.

You can put "Command sends you the following message:" there instead if you like it more that way.

Yes you can. And that way is questionable, since we have the directives window. Not to mention a whole screen dedicated to objectives...

More to the point, the message source is part of the sexp that sends it, so adding that to the actual message text would look very odd.

No, you can change the source to whatever you want. Just type #Capt. Sheridan and smileyboy will send you a message.

I didn't know about that, so I assumed that the source of the message was written into the text.
But it's quite hard to get that out of an " :wtf: "

But my point is, that in the B5 fighters you usually don't get video messages. In the show they where audio only.

The pilot anis can be disabled from the options if one does not like them.
But since the code is there why not use it? I think some people prefer to have them. Exept if the voice files are missing, then it really doesn't matter since you often have to go in to the messages screen in order to find out what the hell is going on... :doubt:

Yes you can turn that part of the HUD off if you want to.
