Hello FS2 community.
I would really like to host games for FS2 (espcially for my bro). I've recieved some help recently from a few people, but nothing has happened.
First things first: I have a D-Link router, and the default XP Firewall. I cannot disable either the router or the firewall.
One person told me to go to my D-Link settings and add 2 ports into the Virtual Servers list. No effect.
Another told me to go to my firewall settings and allow FS2. No effect.
I could really use somebody who has a lot more knowledge than me in this area. Thanks!

What you need to do as far as I'm aware is forwards two ports using the virtual server options. You need to open ports 7117 and 7808. From what I've been told both of these must be open for both TCP and UDP.
That's the exact set up I have on my D-Link and it worked last time I tried it.
Can't advise you much on the windows firewall as I don't use it but opening the same ports/FS2 should be good enough.
If you haven't already done so take a look at the Game-Warden guide to Multiplayer (http://www.game-warden.com/forum/showthread.php?t=267). Make sure you have the correct version of the PXO config too if you're not playing an IP game.
-
I'm not sure what you mean by "forward the ports." I could have already done it, but could you explain in some detail how to forward ports?
-
What you did with the virtual server basically, enter the IP address of your PC into the private address (at least that's what my router calls it), make sure that the virtual server can deall with both TCP and UDP and that should be it.
Are you trying to play an IP game or with FS2NetD (The PXO replacement)?
-
I wish it were that easy.
I am playing with FS2NetD.
-
you need to open ports in the XP firewall. 7117 7808. heres some instructions.
Go into the firewall exceptions panel, click on add port, name it freespace 2 (1), and make the port 7117 TCP, do that again but name it Freespace 2 (2) and make the port 7117 UDP. Do the same with port 7808 TCP and UDP. thats why u probaly cant host
-
ok I did that. Zman, I'm on messenger now, please sign in if you can!
-
any other help?
-
Didn't it work? Have you tried joing a game someone else is hosting to see if the problem lies elsewhere (like the wrong FS2NetD config, running in IP mode, wrong build etc.)
-
Everything works in FS2NetD. Joining other games works, joining servers works. But not hosting.
-
Still having problems....ANYBODY??? :)
-
call dlink!!!! its not windows firewall, cause when we tried to play together, we disabled windows firewall, and it still didnt work, its not me, since u got into my game, so it MUST be ur router......... call d link or try to open the ports up as best u can. i would call them.
-
I'm trying the e-mail method right now, I'm very shy at calling things when the product is not own in my name. (my dad owns it :D)
I'm on right now Zman, so try to message me!!!

http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm
Should have posted that link before. Nothing FS2 specific as far as I know but the help for other applications should show you what you should be doing if you can find your own router on that list.
-
also juss a tidbit of info..... if you go onto the forums at Port Forward you might be able to get some more extensive help there. those ppl know wht they're doing!Port Forward (http://www.forums.portforward.com)

oops..... double post....

WAIT!!!!!!!!! I FIGURED IT OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YOU NEED A STATIC IP ADDRESS!!!!!!!!!! IT SAYS IN THE INSTRUCTIONS!!!
THERE'S DIRECTIONS ON HOW TO IN THIS PAGE!!!!
How to set up a static IP Address in Windows XP: http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm
How to set up a Satic IP on a D-Link Router:http://www.portforward.com/dlink/DGL-4100-dhcp.htm
GET ME ON AIM AND I'LL HELP YOU GET IT!!!!!!!!!
-
I really wish Port Forward wouldn't call a DHCP Reservation a Static IP address. They are pretty different creatures.
A static IP address set on your PC won't ever change. When you reserve an IP address using DHCP you can have it change to 169.254.x.y one day cause of a router problem and completely confuse/annoy the hell out of tech support by insisting you have a static IP address. (I must remember from now on to check where people say that they've set their static IP addresses :D ).
Getting down to the problem at hand though I can't see why not having a static address would be the cause of the problem. Yes it's something you should do when port forwarding in this way but even if you didn't set one the IP address you're forwarding to should match that of your machine unless you were unlucky enough to have the PC check it's DHCP lease while you were setting up things (Seeing as how the PC only does that ever 4 days or so by default you would have to be pretty unlucky)
-
thats the only solution i can think of......
-
Well it's possible and I'm a little short of ideas too so it's worth looking into.
-
ALSO....... did you click on the link for port fowarding on a d link router? it says you MUST set up a static IP address for Port fowarding.
-
Setting your IP address to be static is important but the point I was making is that even if you didn't set a static IP address it should work when you set up the port.
The reason why you must set up a static IP address for port forwarding is that if you don't you can't be certain that a few days later the router won't give you a different IP address. If that happens the traffic that is meant to be sent to your PC won't get there because your router won't be able to find the PC it's supposed to send it to.
Neither the router nor the PC will do any logic testing to see if you've forwarded the port to a non-existant PC let alone whether the IP address on that PC is static so you don't actually need a static address to forward a port but you'd be a fool not to.
-
I'm not comfortable setting up a static IP address because of possible hackers...call me crazy, but it's not my choice.
-
You're crazy.
With DHCP your IP address will most likely stay the same for weeks, months or even years.
Besides if the hacker has made it through your router's firewall a non static IP address is going to stall him for all of 5 seconds.
-
dude, its really hard for a hacker to get through a router. breaking through a dchp address is going to take the same amount of time as breaking through a static IP address. oh and yanks fan, lets put it this way.......
NO STATIC IP, NO HOSTING GAMES. TAKE YOUR PICK!
-
ok, I just activated Static IP, but once again, had no effect. This is really annoying. D-Link refuses to reply to my emails, their tech support by phone probably really stinks, so there's not much hope left. This is a great annoyance for my bro and I. arg.

I'm assuming that you've double and tripple checked that the address you're forwarding to is the same as the one you've actually set. Sometimes it's the little things that catch us out. :D
I take it that internet and other net related things work perfectly on this PC too. It's just FS2 that's the problem right?
What if you try playing an IP game? You'll need the IP address for the WAN side of your router but you may find that it works.
-
I do not play IP games. I don't know if any other games work. Any help would be appreciated.
-
I think Kara's asking you to run an IP game once and see if you can play that way. It's an important step in determining what is wrong.
-
Nope, can't run an IP game.

YEA DOUBLE CHECK THAT..... THAT COULD BE YOUR PROBLEM. you may have to RE-forward to the NEW static IP address.

ZMan, get on AIM. I'm on.
