Was this ever increased past 2000? I remember some discussion on this topic a long time ago, but the latest FREDs still seem to max out at 2000. I've always felt that FS2's backgrounds could really use a lot more stars.
-
I don't know about the limit, but did you ever take a look at this?

It looks way better than the standard stars.
-
Calm down there DB
We could use some more stars. About up to Klingon Academy levels I think...
-
IIRC the limit was already bumped up long ago, I remember seeing some dev screenshots with loads of stars on them. Though something must've happened since it never made it into the CVS apparently.
-
That background model looks great, but the link is dead now.
It would be nice if the normal star limit could be changed to 10000 or so.
-
The skybox is available in TBP though. I think CF isn't putting it back up in a deliberate attempt to get more people to download it :D
-
Have you tried bumping the number of stars in Notepad?
-
i think the game would cap at 2000 if it detects more. I had a post that showed a picture with 40000 and it ran fine until you turned.
here's the picture

I think if it goes up to at least 10000, the streaking stars should be turned off. too much of an fps hit otherwise

Nah, Mr. Fury hosted it for me and it must have been taken down a good while ago. If anyone wants the starfield without downloading TBP, PM me.
Altough it does make sense to force people download TBP... ;7

How easy is this to install/implement? Upon reading through it the first time, it looked like I'd have to get new mission files or some such thing? :blah:

hmm, that would look pretty weird in motion. Maybe you can have it so that only some percentage of the stars produce the blur effect.
-
I once experimented for fun with the maximum number of stars that could be displayed. With the very mediocre system that I use, the loss of performance was minimal to non existent for a number up to approximately 25000. However, slowdowns started becoming really noticeable for anything near 35000 stars or above.
Having said that, I think that Lt. Cannonfodder's starfield model together with a few stars producing the animation blur effect looks generally much more attractive.
-
Has someone still access to that backgroud DaBrain is refering to...I would love to get my hands on theat background. Someone?
-
Check CannonFodder's post.
-
NO...it's only says that it is in TBP...and I don't know what that means.
-
Basically send him a Private Message and ask for it :)
-
um how do I change the number of stars? is it in some ini file or something, or do I have to uh program it?
-
There's a slider in FRED in the background editor. The minimm isn't zero though so if you want zero stars or more than whatever the maximum is you'll need to use notepad to open the mission and hack it in manually. .
-
oh, so if I want to do it for the whole freespace campaign I have to edit every mission?
-
Pretty much. Serves you right for daring to mess with the perfection that is the retail campaign :p
