Title: Figured I'd give TS rendering a go

Couldn't figure out how to do particles. And I can't add a texture to the flare, AFAIK. So the explosion doesn't look too good  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

And the beam flare sucks too. Someone needs to help me out on this.

I can tell you Kazan's way of doing it. Take 4 planes, set them at a 0 degree, 45, 90, and 135 degree angle, line them up so they are all in the same postion, glue them together, and then texture them with a beam texture, if you are using TS 5, there is a section where you can select filters, it's a button on top of the texture/color window, select 'filter' and the color black. Viola!  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I'll have to try that. But tomorrow, now I have to get some sleep.

Basically, I have school from 4pm-8pm, but I can't get a lift there (the school is >60km away), except at 7am  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Heh, I was wondering when someone would realise that's not a Sath  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) And that beam isn't coming from the arm, the arm continues for a while after it. That beam is coming from behind it  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

If I had the time, I would take that Orion apart and  make it look like it had just been sliced in half. But I don't, so...

That's my personal flagship, skinned to look Shivan. It really should be bigger than that, but the Shivan version is just a small destroyer. The Golgotha comparison is right in the sense that I'm gonna have quite a few rotating things on it, just because I can  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

888 polys, with turrets and everything. Arms, beam thingy, spikes and main body are seperate subobjects, which is probably why I get da Shards in FRED2. got a Very Cool effect for the beam, but can't test it because the model itself doesn't work  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Woah, very nice dude! thats a definite thumbs up, especially as it's your first render!

Oh, and Raa Tor'h - thats the kinda thing we want to see on that Deimos where the beams ripping through it - real destruction  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

That looks really, really nice  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) Would look even better with shadows. Less ambient lighting, more environmental  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I had a hard enough time with that one. The textures on the Orion kept disappearing after each render.

But when I get home, I'll improve the beam glow and add some lights. And get rid of that single infinite light I have left  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

So you're saying you want a bright light there? Aww shoot, and I was going to show off the multi-particle peices I was fooling with yesterday...

if you want a decent animation where a beam rips through a ship you'd have to use a pretty high end particles package- i tried it with matterwaves (for max) but only had a beta version so it looked a little triangular

I'm not doing animations, just stills, but I think I figured out a way to do it... (somewhat) with a buttload of lights.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Nice, but I think the particles can be improved. Make them brighter, perhaps? Not so sure. But less reflection please  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Btw, take all these suggestions as a good thing, not a chore - it shows that people think you can achieve better. Like I said before, you are showing a lot of potential, and if you spend even half the time rendering that you do posting on forums (like me), you'll be an excellent artist very, very soon.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
