Title: news from SIGGRAPH
Post by: wEvil on August 16, 2001, 09:05:00 am
well i guess since i'm following it quite closely i might as well post my findings here..i'm sure some of you people might find it interesting.

First out of the fold-
Splutterfish are demoing both brazil R/S 0.2.0 (their third public alpha release) and are also working on a port of Shave and a Haircut to 3dsmax.

Improvements to Brazil in this next version include (much MUCH MUCH) faster global illumination, proper caustics support and an anisotropic shader (at last).  Feature lists are a little skimpy even on the blubeta forum so i'll keep my eye on it.

Lightwave 7 has been released/announced, details of which can be found on CGchannel (i wont go into it cause i dunno anything about lightwave)

A|W are demoing mentalray support and Maya 4.0, which offers amongst other things a better NLA editor and UI improvements.

Softimage are demoing XSI 2.0, which has an alleged 2,500 improvements over 1.5.3, including mentalray 3.0.  Its scheduled for release in october.

Discreet are showing support for Exlunas' Entropy Renderman-compliant GI renderer (the professional version of BMRT, basically)

Areas of research interest appear to be in realtime fluid dynamics and optimisation of parametric effects based on implicit surfaces.  (umm..yea..)

Heh, so the research isn't on medical visualization anymore? I remember it from a few years ago, when it was all they talked about. I actually worked on a couple of things related to it - one of them could have well made it into the conference, if it wasn't for my overly insecure CG professor. It was a visualization algorithm with adaptative regional level of detail controls - designed originally for surgery simulations. It also had some nifty local deformation support, which I would three years later come to know as Geo-Modding on the game development community.

The problem was that my professor wanted me to copy the work of some european guy that had done something similar, but his work was really silly. I did something better, but since I didn't show her any "research material" where I had based my algorithm on she didn't allow me to keep working on it (I was research assistant by then).

Ah, well. I'll still use those algorithms on a 3D engine somday...

Discreet have mainly been concrentrating on the next release of 3d Studio VIZ (the architectural version of max), which sadly is still under a rather tight NDA.

Brazil 0.2.0 is GREAT news for max

Indications are that the GI code is now VERY fast (hours in the old version now take minutes with no grain, even though i kinda liked the effect)

the next release should be available for download on splutterfish in 2-3 weeks.

Get yer models ready, people  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
