Title: Introducing the NEW Athena MK II
Post by: Warlock on April 18, 2001, 04:06:00 pm
Special thanks to DarkShear for his expert touching up of the model and excellent texture maps!

I will begin working on porting her into FS2 in the morning and with luck by tomarrow evening we'll have a new strike bomber up for download.

A worthy succesor to my favorite FS1 bomber  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif). I have a question, have you decided what bombs it can carry and primaries it can use?

The list hasn't been made final just yet.

The first release of the bomber will only use standard FS2 weaponry, but there's many custom weapons that will be used in the campaign.

She's definatly going to be able to carry the Slingshot warheads, and the "as yet unamed" multi-torp warhead Dragons has helped with. (basically a fish like warhead that spawns several unguided low power anti cap torps, concept, if ALL hit from a single warhead it's roughly equal to a cyclops hit, but the effect allows a better chance of SOME impacts for partial damage in case one or more warheads are shot down)

But over all as a strike bomber the primaries will be a bit better than most bombers as will the speed and agility, but at the cost of a high load of warheads.

Great ship design.

The texturing is pretty good, but with some tweaking on the cockpit in photoshop to add some light to make the cockpit look more reflective, as well as some more "small logos and lights" as on the Herc and Apollo.

These could be things I could get done in a matter of minutes, and would make it feel more like it's an FS1-ish type.

Actually Darkshear did a total remodel before he did the textures. Since I used the original model for the Athena as my base it came out not being 100% between each half, thus making texuring a *****  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Well a couple things

1. It's not meant to be FS1-ish  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) Like the Herc MK II this is a FS2 era craft, the concept is she was under development during the timeline of FS2 and just begining to be issued at the end.

2. Like alot of the newer GTVA designs the Athena MK II incoorperates both Terran and Vasuden Tech along with what little data GTVA has gained from the Shivans.

3. Now why would you want bright shiney lights on a strike bomber meant to speed into range, dump ammo and move out?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

The cockpit I can understand, but honestly about all I could see changing would be perhaps a hull bracer splitted the middle like on the Herc 1 & 2. Most of the fighters have the simple black cockpit.

Remember we can't go to crazy with colors as FS2 tends to react weirdly, I made a lovely planet map but FS2 doesn't even get close the the colors, all I get is a bunch of grey and purplish strips

(yes it was a 256 color PCX :P )

I agree that some lights are in order. Make it more futuristic looking I gues.

Bah! :P

heh...
first: I have never played/seen the boxes/seen screencaps of fs 1 or 2 till that second pic was posted of the ship in the game environment. So...I have no idea what it was supposed to look like...

Plus I did the whole thing in about 2 hours...a little less then an hour to model...about an hour to texture...
(I had just woken up and decided to spit it out real fast)

b: Lights? Why? I could add them in, or Warlock can, I made it for him...

Third: This was my first ever attempt at a game model or texture...I think I did ok :P

And in conclusion: I don't plan on doing any more game model texturing stuff, except for the stuff I have already agreed to doing...I had to simulate bump maps in the textures, limit myself on texture sizes, and come up with whole new ways to texture things simulating the way it would look once rendered, and still keep a game type of feel to it...
All of that is a pain...I will stick to big ole complex models and mulitple maps and complex lighting and all the easy stuff...
You gamers make things hard on yourselves :P

And finally: heh I was getting frustrated with the textures so I cheated around the cockpit a lot byu just painting the polys in the general area black...

1, b, 3rd, conclusion, finally...anyone else think that was funny? :P

PS: My next game models will be better I promise :P

Dark buddy, i was in no way disappointed! So far the responce to the preview renders of it were ranged from excellent to plainly stunned  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) (on the fs2 and SW vbbs)

Once Eth's finished that other fighter I talked to you about I'm really looking foward to seeing your textures on her  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

(That one should be alot easier as he has some what of a clue about modeling as opposed to myself  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) (It's at least even all over lol )

Also he told me tonight he's just about completed with the UV mapping so that should make it a little easier.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

But first game model or not man..I'm still impressed.

Warlock? WHATWHATWHAT? You can do any colour you want! What's wrong with this planet? Mmmh wouldn't you have forgotten to convert it into a 256 colour pic before using it??? Mhhh??? Confess your fault, bad little boy!
(for information, FS2 engine can show up 32bit (---> many millions) colors, but can only handle 256 colours maps)

Ummm like i said I made 100% sure it was a 256 PCX file  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

I'm starting to think it was more the rez of the map than anything else.

But the idea's on hold until I clean out the GOTP tbl files and see if we'll even have room enough for planetary data.

No offense was intended at all Darkshear  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Just some criticisms on the texturing of the ship which can be easily done in photoshop with a few moments of work if it really wanted to be done.

Also Darkshear, a good sample of FS2 in-game is below: http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/twilight/screen03.jpg ("http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/twilight/screen03.jpg")

The ships generally do not appear pixelated, and often look better in-game than the 3d renders on various fan sites.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
