Also: I used Zone Alarm for years but a couple of months ago it started to occasionally freeze both my machines. I've switched to Sygate - also good, also free.

[color=66ff00]I think there's a memory leak in one of ZA's components; vsmon.exe that rears it's head from time to time.

*uses Sygate Personal Firewall and thinks it rocks*

Interesting. Strange that it hit both my machines around the same time... Must have been uncovered by something that I installed on both of 'em - or a Windows update. :doubt:

What he said...

So you want security software?
Clamwin (http://www.clamwin.com) (virus scanner)
Nmap (http://www.insecure.org/nmap/) (port scanner)
Ethereal (http://www.ethereal.com/) (packet sniffer and protocol analyzer)
If only the Nessus server ran on Windows too.
-
really anything free is good.
-
ZoneAlarm's got so many technical issues at times so I keep away from it, Sygate was bought by Norton a while ago so its future is unclear. Kerio or Agnitum would be more viable choices in my opinion. avast! 4 Home Edition is the best anti-virus software for Win I know of.
Other softwares worth mentioning:
- 7zip, better than most file compression/extraction tools.
- Daemon Tools, no burning capabilities but mounts cd/dvd images efficiently.
- FeedReader, good tool to keep you up-to-date with a lot of RSS/ATOM feeds.
- FileZilla, maybe the best ftp client software for Win out there.
- FileZilla Server, efficient ftp server.
- Firefox, you all know this.
- Irfanview, good for quick viewing of different image files.
- Microsoft Antispyware, is old GIANT Antispyware, beats Ad-Aware along with most other free malware removal tools. Also got real-time protection for the most paranoid of you.
- Media Player Classic, get this with ffdshow and vsfilter and you have nearly all media playpack covered.
- OpenOffice, good alternative for MS Office.
- PageDefrag, boot-time defragger that defrags files that cannot be defragged while Windows is running.
- PuTTY, you all should know this. One of the best telnet/ssh clients.
- Thunderbird, you all know this.
- Trillian Basic. Version 3 Basic is very good, covers AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo and IRC.
-
double post - too lazy to edit
actually, since I installed the above free stuff some of my web pages are messing up. I am guessing part of the page is being blocked by something that I installed.

[color=66ff00]A few more worthy bits o' kit:
Gaim: Good, no fluff version of Trillian.
Filezilla: Excellent FTP server.
SmartFTP: Free, easy to use FTP client.
Azureus: Best bittorrent client for all your legal downloading needs.
As for me I'll have to check out another firewall other than ZA. It's a pity, ZA's way of allowing/disallowing on a program by pogram basis is quite a good feature.

For MPC, I honestly prefer using real codecs as opposed to ffdshow. Fewer compatibility problems.

:wtf:
Allright, either you've been smoking weeds your you've used some real old version.

I should give Gaim a go and see how it compares. But how come you listed FileZilla Server but did not list FileZilla client, instead listed SmartFTP which I've found to be inferior. :wtf:
Ah, how could I forget to list Azureus, the single best torrent client out there.
-
I've had Xvid incompatibility and a few others. Mind you, this is about a year back, but still.
-
New versions are far better than what they were year or more back. All I need is Media Player Classic with ffdshow and vsfilter (vobsub). Some people might also want to get Real Alternative and QuickTime Alternative.

[color=66ff00]Gaim's nice and light by comparison.
As for SmartFTP, it's always done a good job for me so I never bothered trying anything else I guess. I might have a look at Filezilla client.

Tried Gaim 1.5.0, found Trillian 3 Basic to be still better.
-
The only problem I've had so far with Gaim is the fact that it hates to send files/direct connect.

I think I'll just stay with my Xvid 1.1 Beta 2. Koepi's binary is really quite nice.

Nobody's forcing to switch.
I simply like the fact that ffdshow handles xvid, divx, ms mpeg4, windows media, 3iv2, 3ivx, rmp4, dm4v, mpeg 1, mpeg 2, h.236, h.264, mjpeg, dv, huffyuv, corepng, mpng, mp2, mp3, vorbis, ac3, dts, aac, amr and flac. A real powehouse in one small tight package. :)
-
Avast Anitivirus
Zone Alarm or Sygate Personal Firewall
Spybot or Ad-aware
Firefox
used all of these and I was/am satisfied with the protection they offer
-
Kerio PF > ZoneAlarm - almost the same features as Pro but in a much tighter, less bloated package. Plus ZA Pro you have to pay for, as the free basic edition is woefully inadequate for most.
-
[color=66ff00]Been running Sygate for the last while, I'm impressed.
Good call all those who listed it.

This thread is a good way to educate some of the masses about alternatives to commercial softwares, so I thought I'd bumb this thread a bit with following comment.
Sourceforge.net is perhaps the biggest open-source hosting out there. You can easily find good open source software there, if you don't know where to begin, I suggest you first check Top Downloads (Past 7 Days) (http://sourceforge.net/top/toplist.php?type=downloads_week) and then Top Downloads (All-Time) (http://sourceforge.net/top/topalltime.php?type=downloads). Sourceforge.net might be a tad slow at times, but from time to time I have found some gems there.

Sourceforge is a fun site. If only K-Ninja had been easier to get set up as the default browser...
In case you don't know, K-ninja is a cleaner version of K-meleon, which is a slashed down version of Mozilla 1.7 that runs quite a bit faster than Firefox.
