Title:  Why does college cost so much
Post by: Kazan on August 20, 2001, 06:57:00 pm
Here are the prices - PER YEAR for the colleges I am considering going to

Washington University in St. Louis ~$35,000 [source: http://aisweb.wustl.edu/admissions/home.nsf/dd5cab6801f1723585256474005327c8/7291cbb678942d0c8625672b006a57e0?OpenDocument (//"http://aisweb.wustl.edu/admissions/home.nsf/dd5cab6801f1723585256474005327c8/7291cbb678942d0c8625672b006a57e0?OpenDocument")  ]

Iowa State University ~$3250 a year [source: http://www.iastate.edu/~registrar/fees/ (//"http://www.iastate.edu/~registrar/fees/")  ]

Cost may force it to be ISU, but i'd much rather go to WUSTL - but I'd need a free ride to go there

why the h3ll does it cost so friggen much! I mean the german's get their college for flipping free basically, we hand out so much flipping money to stupid people that cannot support themselves, but we cannot have the government run schools that are free if you earn your place

Yeah, that sucks. Here in Brazil we have private and government funded universities, but you have to face odds up to 30 to 1 on my state - and even around 100 to 1 on more crowded places - on a huge exam to get into the free gevernment funded ones.

I was able to get into Computer Science on the place I wanted (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul - UFRGS), but I know heaps of people that try it for two, three or even more years in a row to try to get inside and end up having to pay for a private university. At least here we have an option, and if you're good enough you can get it for free. Isn't there a single good government university on the United States?

idea:

1. Study 24/7 during high school.
result of 1: Massive scholarship, college becomes almost free because they want a Ubar-smart dudes!

2. Don't go to college and fraud a resume that says you know everything about 3D Design
result of 2: Go to jail.

We're not Germans.

Really, the cost of college varies on the college.  State colleges do cost less (a local one here is only a bit less than $3000, not counting room and board), and "Ivy league" are so expensive, you might as well forget it.

However, we do get financial aid.  Pell grants, state grants, Stafford loans (pay no interest) ect.  If you apply for it, you can get quite a bit.

Welcome to the world:

i know how much the books cost, remember i do have an older brother  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) he was just going to the local comm college - then he joined the military to pay for it [he was doing his 'shiat' classes at the comm college, then transfering creds]

I do get it a bit easier because ill have my entire freshmen year of CS done  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Ahh, isn't it great when you have people on the inside?  Great thing about some of SFU's policies is that workers can get tuition waivers for their dependents.  Saves a bunch on university costs for the Tracey family, I can tell you that much.   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Well, I spent something around US$ 100 on books for the whole course, and that's about it. We had a really good library on the CS institute, so I just had to buy some of the most important books to have at home...

I just can't understand why there are no free universities over there...

Move to Ontario...its cheap cheap cheap.  Okay, not that cheap.

Tuition is about $4,000 Canadian...almost everywhere you go.  Now residence, books, fee's, and all that nasty stuff bumps it upto about $10,000.

But most of the places around here are fairly equal I think in terms of quality.

lucky none of you live in the UK.

UNless you get a job while you're at uni you can look forward to living on about $7,000 for the whole year, plus having to pay at elast $1,500k fees.  about 5 years ago id be able to get about twice the student loan and wouldnt have to pay ANY fees.

And guess what...this only came into effect after Tony Blair and his bunch or morons got voted in by the even moronic followers that seem to be easily blinded by the simplest PR excersises.

Owww... French people should read HLP forums before complaining... I love my country even more now  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) We have special studient logements in every city there's a uni, with special loans and aids. For exemple, while I was in train, I listened to 2 people talking about their logement for uni, the guy had so many aids (free aids, nothing to payback) he paid only 12 francs (about 1.5$... ) for the logement, wxhich seemed to be a nice place to live in btw.
Next year with aids I'll pay around 200$, and I'm in the exact center of Nantes, a big city. Uni in france is about free, but books are very expensive, tho, and you need an incredible amount of them . Of course uni are public here, this explains that.

Yep... thank god i live in Scotland, where the fees are paid by a loan until I earn 10k+ (16k being the average wage  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif) ).

The grants system is a joke, too.  I was deemed worthy of a £2500 loan, thanks to my parents current low income, but my application for travel expenses was turned down.... it's just a scam to make interest on loans.

Still, at least it's not as bad as the US in terms of cost...

No kidding.  They charge an arm and a leg over here(more if you're really unlucky  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) ).  Luckily, low-interest private student loans are easy to get, and usually you can pay them back once you get a good paying job  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Anyway, Kazan, you're applying for out of country tuition????  Wow, for the state school, It's cool that you got such a good deal.  The University of Illinois for in-state residents is upwards of $5000
