Title: Rita. wow...
Post by: Stealth on September 20, 2005, 11:48:12 pm
So "Rita"s on its way to Houston, and is expected to be a CAT 4 by the time it hits... i.e. comparable to Katrina.  Obviously it won't inflict as much damage as it did to New Orleans, the primary reason being that our city is above sea level....... but still.

i filled up the gas tank of both cars today, my parents are doing the same with their cars.  we're parking in an empty parking lot on friday night onward, cause our neighborhood has too many trees and such.  in addition i'm filling up our hot tub to have enough water to flush toilets, cause when Allison came through a few years ago, we went without electricity for 2 weeks plus, and that didn't even do noticeable damage to our neighborhood!  because all the power lines here are above ground, it just takes one tree to fall over...

also, we're filling up everything we have with water.  our water comes from a well, so when electricity goes out, so does our water supply.  big chance they may call to evacuate, and if they do, we're in serious trouble.  for one, we've still got thousands and thousands of refugees from Katrina's destruction (mostly people from New Orleans) in our city, a lot of them still in the Astrodome...

i'm kind of panicking.  i'm giving all of senior management (they're all evacuating to different places over the weekend) an external hard drive, sealed in a thick plastic bag, with all the company's data and information on it (encrypted), just in case.  i'm also covering all the servers with a tarp, bringing in everyone's PCs to the server room, and covering them too.

so yeah.  i'm praying that it'll turn its course.

If it looks like trouble, get out before everyone else gets the same idea. You don't want to take chances, especially after we all saw what Katrina did.

I 'like' how the guy writing for the Interdictor (http://www.livejournal.com/users/interdictor/), who got trapped in the company's offices (they had generator power, supplies, etc). said that he'd be moving out of New Orleans... either to Florida or California. Wow. Such safe locations.

Anyway, good luck to ya, man... never underestimate the sustaining power of chalva (http://www.judaicawebstore.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=AH-0001) to keep you going when all else is gone (and to rot your teeth, probably). ;)

Yeah people can be downright retarded when given the oppertunity.  I'm worried about people putting a run on gas supplies here already, and it hasn't even hit anything yet.

And you do realize it's either .30-06 or "Thirty aught six", right?  As in .30 caliber rifle using ammunition adopted as Army standard in 1906.

Well, I don't know if Houston has ever took a direct hit, but Galvestion has, 1900, 8,000+ dead when a 22 foot storm surge sweept over the island..

'78 houston took a bad hit, power and water was out for like 2 weeks
'98 tropical storm allison dumped a ****load of water (like at least 18 inches i think) and flooded many areas

fortunately i live on rather high, well drained ground, so theoretically I should be OK but Im leaving for austin tommorow to stay with some relatives just in case. Im also taking my recently built uber-computer with me because I just spent like 1k building it and god forbid anything happen to it.....

bottom line tho, galveston is gona get r4ped in the as(s). Their storm wall (a very innovative form of protection btw) is only like 15-20 feet tall and if the storm surge surpasses that, which it probably will, the whole island will go to hell. you would have to be some kind of retarded to stay in galveston right now.

I said it in the other thread, but my cousin lives in (the north, apparently) Houston.  He and his wife work at a hospital (that sent choppers to New Orleans.  Except they were shot at, so they had to go back).  So hopefully they'll be ok, and not see too much extra work.

yeah there was the 1983 hurricane (CAT4 i believe) that hit Houston H-A-R-D... did a bunch of damage.  then Allison in 2001 was just a joke compared to what this is going to be (hurricane >>>> tropical storm).  only thing Allison did was rain a lot.  this isn't even going to compare.

i'm seriously considering the prospect of losing our house.  i've taken pictures of it already.  we live in a heavily wooded area, and just one tree on the house is all it takes.  of course it's insured, but it'll still never be the same.  it's sad.  i hate change, but i'm almost positive this is going to kill our house :(

well once it hits land it'll start weakening... i'm thinking it'll probably be a cat4 by the time it hits us, but still scary.

looking here tonight, it seems like just a regular night.  sky's perfect, weather feels great.

48 hours from now there's going to be trees falling, and 180+ MPH winds.  not looking forward to it :(

we're taking back roads.  my aunt and uncle are ahead of us, and they say they're traveling 40 miles per hour consistently.  they're actually going in a semi-circle to Dallas.  it's actually on the outskirts of Dallas, so there are backroads to it.

assuming we leave at 8:00 this evening, if it takes 12 hours, we'll still be looking at 8:00 friday morning, giving us another good 6-8 hours to play with before the rain is supposed to start.  i still say we should've left early this morning or last night, but my parents want the house boarded up and such

new plan:  we're staying in Houston... (because we'd sit for 2 hours and not even enter the highway yet.  ALL roads out of the town are filled up). we're taking all personal belongings, photo albums, computers, cameras, laptops, etc. and driving to the offices i work at.  i've got a key, and authorization to stay there during the storm.  also means we can pull our cars into the warehouse.  that thing's built of steel and concrete, it's not going anywhere.  plus we'll be in the offices, built inside the already strong warehouse.  i don't think we'll have anything to worry about.

reason we're not leaving, is people are calling in and saying they drove from Galveston to Houston (normally a 1 hour and a bit drive) and it's taken them 17 hours +.  highway 290 isn't even MOVING.  (seriously).  i mean, we'll drive for a solid day, 24 hours, and we won't even get near college station.  we wouldn't even get to waller (normally a 25 - 30 minute drive down the highway).  they said they're going to open up all incoming lanes, and turn the whole highway into one big outbound road (i.e. there's 3 lanes going, 3 lanes coming, and the 2 lane feeder on each side.  10 lanes altogether.  5 coming, 5 going.  they're going to make it 8 lanes going, 2 lanes coming in).  however, they say they won't even get to it before the hurricane hits.

only thing worse than being at home in Houston during this hurricane = sitting on your car, out of gas, on a highway full of cars.  tornados > cars.

also, apparently the hurricane's shifted to the east a bit, meaning Houston no longer will get the "dirty" (East) side of the hurricane... we'll get more of the west part.  that's very good.

will keep you all updated.  living in this house the rest of the day and night, and tomorrow around lunch time (hurricane scheduled to hit in late afternoon -- evening) we'll move to the offices.  i'll have the fiber lines to "play" on, plus they've got TVs, microwaves, fridges, a lot of computers, you name it :D :D.  should be fun

anyone up for an IP game of FS2 around now?

Remember, if the power goes out, use that generator to keep FS2 running; that's your highest priority. :p  And glad to hear that you made it out MP. It does look like the thing is taking a slightly more northward track, so hopefully Houston will be spared the worst of it.

why not?  we've got another 12 hours till it hits us, and we're taking everything valuable to the warehouse

our house is surrounded by trees.  if a tree falls and breaks open the roof during a hurricane, all our belongings will end up in galveston...

we have plenty of time.  i'm taking my clothes, computers, DVDs, camera, etc. and taking it down there.

naaa we've got a ton of time, and a ton of space (4 cars) to take stuff to the warehouse.  i could take my bed if i wanted.  we've got another good 6-8 hours before it even starts raining, and since this house is GOING to most likely get hurt, if not destroyed, then why not take everything.  my siblings and parents have taken all their clothes, jewelry, photo albums, i've even got all my DVDs.  cause when we have to rebuild everything, which we might, it'll be easier and cheaper the more we have.  i'm just packing my FS/Descent games, cause they hold the most value to me of all my games.  i'm going to most likely take a couple others if i have room, like starcraft, half life 2, KotoR, Worms3D, worms blast, rainbox 6, janes f/a 18 super hornet, Warcraft, Frozen Throne, etc.

i'll be fine :)  the hurricane hasn't hit yet ;)

this means i won't have internet an hour from now till God knows when.  power's going to be out for probably 2 weeks or something.  i'll try to find a connection to post some pictures or something in the meantime though.  restaurant windows and doors are boarded up, but i'll find a peep hole when the hurricane first hits and post you rubber-necks a couple of pictures

take care everyone

[q]
New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin has suspended a plan for residents to return to the city devastated by Hurricane Katrina three weeks ago.

He said that, with a new tropical storm menacing the southern US coast, the "conditions have changed".

The city's Algiers section has already opened and Mayor Nagin had plans to open three more district shortly.

But President Bush and top officials have voiced concern at the stricken city's ability to cope with the influx.

Mayor Nagin told a press conference that "all re-entry" to the city was being suspended immediately.

The conditions have changed. We have another hurricane approaching us," he said.

Tropical Storm Rita is building in strength as it heads towards the Florida Keys and could become a hurricane.

Its predicted path would take it to Texas - where many of Hurricane Katrina's victims have sought refuge - at the weekend, and some maps suggest it may hit parts of Louisiana.

On Monday, the number of confirmed deaths in Louisiana as a result of the storm climbed by 90 to 736, taking the death toll across the region to 973.

'Matter of timing'

Earlier, Coast Guard Vice-Admiral Thad Allen, head of the recovery effort, warned that the threat of more storms complicated plans to re-open the city.

"Whatever population goes into New Orleans right now, there has to be an evacuation plan on how to get them out in the event of another hurricane," he said, speaking on US television station CBS.

Speaking after a meeting with his Homeland Security Council, President George W Bush said his administration was "cautious about encouraging people to return at this moment of history".

He stressed that the city needed to re-emerge, but it was "a matter of timing".

"The mayor has got this dream about having his city up and running," said Mr Bush. "We share that dream, but we also want to be realistic about some of the hurdles and obstacles."

Mayor Nagin had said he wanted to allow residents to return to New Orleans one postcode at a time.

He had announced plans for the Uptown neighbourhood, the Garden District and the historic French Quarter to be re-settled over the next week - bringing a third of New Orleans' evacuated inhabitants back to the city.

Residents of Algiers, a district of 57,000 people which escaped the worst of the damage, became the first to be able to return on Monday.

The BBC's Oliver Conway described how they were returning to homes with running water and electricity - although food and water was being supplied by a relief station run by the army and volunteers.

Mayor Nagin has now urged those who returned to Algiers to be ready to evacuate as early as Wednesday.

Yep that's what I heard too. I do remember thinking at the time that he was looking at another complete disaster if there was so much a big thunderstorm in the next few months. Which made it twice as stupid considering that we're still in the middle of hurricane season

streets are clearing out now.  there's one corner store open, and there's like 30 cars parked next to it.  people are grabbing whatever they can.  even stuff they probably won't need, like cat food and trash bags and such.  shelves are cleared.

the wind picked up a lot during the last hour only.  before that it was a great day, but now it's dull, starting to get cloudy, and the wind's picking up more and more, blowing cans across the street and such.  we're leaving the house for the last time in about half an hour, took all the things to the restaurant, we should be pretty safe there i'm thinking.  taking a last shower, looking around the house for the last time, shutting power off, and heading over there permanently.

it's a weird feeling, knowing that the next 3 days are going to be hell, but there's nothing you can do to stop it, you know?  It gives me a nervous, sick feeling in my stomach, because i dunno what could happen.  one of the big power lines outside could fall on the restaurant, start a fire, and that'd be the end of me and my family.  never experienced any hurricane, but i've heard the devastation a CAT1 hurricane can do, i can't even begin to imagine what a CAT4 (or MAYBE, they say, a CAT3 by the time it hits us) hurricane will do.  i've seen the pictures of parts of New Orleans after Katrina... parts that were destroyed by the wind, not flooding or storm surges.  a suburban neighborhood street, with nothing but boards and planks on either side of it, nothing standing more than a few feet tall.  trees, houses, light posts, everything just devastated.  will that be the fate of our house?  quite possibly.

either way, i'm shutting power down to the house in a few minutes, then we're boarding up in the restaurant, and going to watch movies and such (got my main computer there, but no internet unfortunately).  at least i can rest knowing my cars are safe, but it's the house i worry about though :-/.  oh well, the restaurant is about a 3 or 4 minute drive from our house, and about a 15-20 minute walk, so that's good i guess... :(

hope this thing blows over and doesn't do as much damage as it's expected to.  you know the funny thing is you see stuff on the news, and always think "it'll never happen to me"... i mean, don't get me wrong, i've helped with half a dozen disasters, and the relief work that followed, including the tsunami, hurricane Allison in 2001, and was heavily involved in preparation for the rebuild and relief of Katrina.  but you always think "wow, this sucks" but you're invincible, you know.  until events like this, where you realize just how mortal and vulnerable you are.  and no matter how much money you have, or resources, you can't do anything to change it.  everyone's as helpless here as the rest of us.

Well, hope everyone else in Houston (or surrounding areas) the best of luck.  i'm sure i'll talk to you again soon.  i'm terrified, and scared ****less, but who knows what'll happen... to our house, our belongings, or our lives even.

take care, and here's hoping to talking to you all soon.  if that doesn't happen, then know it's been great knowing all of you, and i don't care what they say, this is the best community i've ever come across, without any question.  sorry for any arguments and conflicts i've had with various ideas and members over the last few years.  i'm sure we'll be OK though.  we're a lot better off than most people, i hope.  cheers.

well it took my brother 13 hours to go 61 miles into huntsville from Katy so yeah traffic is pretty slow.  Luckily he brought his camper trailer as well.  There is definately going to be some flooding on the mainland, but the natural sea barrier protects a lot of the coast.  Those out in Bolivar Pelican Island, Texas City are the places that it's going to suck.

It's a CAT 3 atm.

Even though you probably won't read this for a little while, best of luck to you and your family Stealth, and God bless.  Hope to hear from you soon.

For the rest of us, the storm's track has shifted a little more to the northwest, so Houston's going to be on the less dangerous western side of the eye.  Good news for Stealth, but it doesn't look good for right around the Texas/Louisiana border.

What scares me is the fact the meteorogists predict 5-6 more hurricanes before the end of they year... And even more each following year.

and even mroe scarier - they ran out of names. They didn't prepare enough names for this year.....

Stealth, you ever post apologetic, never-see-you-again **** like that and I swear I'll...

I know you can't see this, but just remember that you'll survive this. You might lose a lot of what you have, but if you're smart and tough, you'll pull through. Even if you don't get to visit us for a while, you will survive. Damned if some ***** hurricane tears a member of our community apart.

On a lighter note, remember that the community is always here for you no matter what. You'll be missed by everybody, myself especially. You've always been here for the community, and we will return the favor. Stay tough for us bro.

And since you can't read this... :(

Houston is basicly fine, unless Rita stops, puts it in reverse and backs over the city. All they will get, as it looks at the moment, is winds 45-60 mph, and they *may get an hurricane force gust.

What does that mean? Basicly all the damage is gonna be caused by falling trees and power will be out. But, no major damage expected wind wise, although Gaveston might get a 3-6 foot storm surge, but that is kind of minor.

A deffinite far cry from the 125-140+ winds they would have seen. And the big surge as well.

Thats right, but not this one, if it does, it will be 200 miles inland. The only time hurricanes do that is when they are weak.

Bah! I'm back and we didn't even get a drop of rain in Columbus. I'm kind of happily disappointed that I traveled all that way and back for no reason. It looks like Houston didn't get hit too badly so Stealth will probably be back with us soon. Our town is a madhouse though. It's built right where two highways cross so there's no food and until recently there was no gas from all the evacuees buying it. Our local Wal-mart and HEB are closed (that's general store and grocery store to you furriners) until tomorrow.
Oh and my packing priorities are similar to Stealth's: I made sure I had my FS2 cds before I left. :D

what a joke of a hurricane.  i feel cheated in a way, all the effort and panic we went through, for a bit of wind.  i've seen bigger hurricanes in my shower. geez.

actually i shouldn't say that, cause our house is kind of damaged, just nothing like we all thought it would be:

actually it was over before anyone though it would begin.  wind's still kind of strong up here, whistling through the trees, by 1:00 AM we knew it would miss us entirely, and it dropped to 'tropical storm' level within a few short hours.  all the predictions, and warnings of "30+ inches of rain, and 170 MPH winds" for nothing.  i'd be suprised if we got 6 inches of rain over here... very suprised.  you should see this area though.  there's hardly a house that isn't boarded up.  all the store fronts are closed with taped and boarded windows.  by 8:00 PM last night, when the wind started picking up, the only cars on the road were police cars.  goes to show you can never predict what's going to happen.  that hurricane really made a turn for the better.

actually that image i posted above isn't for real... our house is fine except for a bit of damage to the roof... some branches fell down, no branches bigger than like, 4 or 5 inches in diameter though.  all our pine and oak trees are still standing strong.  the streets are full of pine needles and twigs, and one of the boards across a window broke from a branch ripping against it as it fell, but otherwise no glass broke.  power's still on, which is amazing, although it flickered for a few seconds more than once last night.

thx for the support everyone :D  appreciated :D :D :D  will post pictures of the 'result' in a little bit

For nothing, I think not,Be glad it missed you, but the warnings were there for a reason.

I don't want to sound mean, but that kind of thinking is what got alot of the people killed during Kat. Ivan missed them, didn't bother them too bad, so Kat wouldn't be any different, it was, and they paid for it. So it isn't wise to say the warnings were for nothing, because if this had come in about 60 miles more south, there would be an whole world of difference.

i'm talking about the warnings in our area.  i'm well aware that Rita affected a lot of people as predicted, but for us, we saw half an hour of LIGHT rain, and wind for a few hours, and that was it.

Still the warnings for that area were there for a reason. Hurricanes are still unpredictable, one second they can be moving away, the the next second they can be coming at you.

Powerful hurricanes like Rita, wobble one way, than the next. And this wobbling, while not moving much at the moment, can mean 50-60 miles at landfall.

Just the next time a strong hurricane is comming at you, take the same precautions as you did, while it might cause alot of problems at the moment, it means everything if it saves your life. Just don't make the mistakes they made during Kat, take every warning seriously.

That's because you haven't learned.

See, the only reason New Orleans was a surprise, was because everyone stopped believeing the sensationalistic retarded news-meteorologists. It was always a matter of "OH MY GOD, THE END IS HERE WITH THIS STORM", and 90% of the time, it panned out to be complete crap.

So everyone thought the same thing when the New Orleans one happened, but that time it fell within that 10% and everyone was so shocked.

This time, everyone evacuated ONLY because of New Orleans. Not because this hurricane was any different than any of the millions that always managed to miss, but because the sensationalist news got some credibility after NO, everyone believed it like gospel.

To reiterate.

Now it is true that with each passing season, the Earth doesn't like you people. I guess it's probably because of all the shit you're testing as far as weapons or whatever goes (you know, all the tax money that goes into SUPAR SEKRET STUFF YOUR GOVERNMENT CANT LET YOU IN ON BECAUSE ITS NATIONAL SEKURITY!!!11one), and whatever the emmissions may be (hardly Global Warming, but let's call it that, because everyone believes in it), it's fueling Nature to hate your ****ing guts.

So my prognosis on Hurricanes is that the sensationalistic media bull**** will drop from being 90% false, to 85% or 80% false.

This has been public education about weather and society based on logic by BlackDove.

Don't write me an angry message.

well i mean, if this happened again i'd do the same thing, i just feel a little cheated, cuase i spent a full day boarding up the house, and gathering my belongings (with the rest of my family) and locking down in the back room of a restaurant, and then the hurricane goes and misses :p

but yeah. we'd do it again if we got the same warning.  i know how much damage serious hurricanes can do :)

well don't get me wrong, i'm glad nothing happened, and i wouldn't change that.  but everyone around here feels the same way i do :p.  spending a full day boarding up the house, moving stuff, etc. and then another day to clean everything up and move back in, you know, you kind of expect a little more than a bit of wind and half an hour of light rain ;)  you should know my personality by now, and know that i'm not wanting my house to be destroyed or anything ;)
