Hey!
I need your help here. What do you think about the explosion on the arcadia. Good, bad, improvments etc.
This next $hit is a nebula animation. A Sathanas flying in a dense red nebula. This was a test animation for something Aldo wanted.

boum!

Nice beams!
-
Holyeee ****! That Arcadia is 0wnT!
The Sathanas, Beams and Arcadia are all perfect - perhaps a couple of shockwaves for the explosion? other than that I can almost feel the camera shaking from the blast... woah!
-
wOw! (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/eek.gif)
Hey, Pez, I might have something coming up that I'd like you help for.....
-
The beams look great, but not like Sathanas ones. Looks like some fusion weapon, when the beams are ... slick? But those looks terrible (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
edit: just d/led the divx. It's cool, but the sathanas moves too fast, so it looks quite smaller than it should be. But I ^suppose the purpose is to show off the nebulae, and I must say: wow! Looks like 3dsmax volumetric fog to me, no?

Yeah, that really looks like my nebula animation tests on MAX (remember the one with the supersonic Fenris? It was something like that (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif))...
What kind of volumetrics did you use on it?

(http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) yeah that was exactly what I was thinking about, but I didn't know if a lot of people had seen it (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Speaking of fernis, there looks like one in there thats being melted by that beam
Exellent work. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I used just environment fog. I tried with volume fog but that didn't look so good. For the fog I used the same map as environment nebula map and then animated it (resized the nebula from 15 to 16 every 100 frames)

Nice work... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
-
What modelling environment did you use for that animation!
-
Pez, can you put the codec up for download? I can't get it playing with my copy of media player...
-
My gosh... that is damn cool. However, those Sathanas beams just aren't FS-ey - they're definitely not bad, I just don't think those are BFReds (you may or may not want this). But the explosion effect is top-notch. Amazing - as is the Sathanas/nebula animation. If you can get that Sathanas to have its glow affect the nebula around it, and make it move more slowly (not that that's a problem), that will be amazing. Oh, and Thunder? Try Google ("http://www.google.com") next time (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I used 3DS Maxs environment....and just added a fog effect.
-
Those look more like the Shivan answer to IW PBCs.
-
I especially like what's happening to that Arcadia... it looks like it's disintegrating rather than just blowing up. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
Joe.

I must say that it looks like something out of a cutscene movie. Very very good work.

Nice beams, but what are those chunks of things being blasted from the beams, people (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I could (if you guys want) render this again in higher resolution and better quality. Plus I need to fix the flares, they are kind of wrong (mind you, it was 20 min render)
Pez
-
Only thing I see wrong is that the beams don't match up with the flares on the Sathanas.

- Too lazy for a siggy at the moment -

Please, that would be sweet. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
And MD is right, the beams don't quite look like they match up with the beam firing points. Or maybe that is just an arte/ifact of the beam texture you used.

You're right. I fix that.
-
Just curious...but how did you do those beams? (I've got 3dsmax R2.5)

Ok. This is in 3DS Max 3.1 but I don't think that it'll matter.
1. Make a sphere gizmo. Under "sphere gizmo parameters". Click the box where it says hemishere.
2. Use a non-uniform scale on the gizmo so it get streched.
3. Open up the environment dialog box (Rendering/environment)
4. Under "Atmosphere". Click add, and then "combustion".
5. Click on "Pick gizmo". Choose the shere gizmo in the perspective viewport.
6. Replace the "Inner color" with white.
7. Just change the "density" to 100.
I "came" up with this technic about week ago so I'm sure we'll see some improvements.
Oh, and for those who don't think that the beams don't look like the ones in FS2. I can only agree. But I want the beams to look like the box cover on FS2 and something like when the Lucifer shoots an Orion in the opening cutscene in FS2.

particle systems with glow
a transparent cylinder with glow
or if you can obtain "a bunch of volumes" or "scatterVL" you could use that

Here is the 1024x768 version with better quality and some things that I fixed.

I had noticed the Fenris before, but those escape pods I hadn't. Cool anyway (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
