Title: RELEASE: Desperation Chapter 2
Post by: Singh on September 25, 2005, 05:27:37 am
EDIT: OK, first off a warning:

DO NOT USE 3.6.7 with this campiagn!!! it doesn't work and for some stupid reason screws up the missions completely. You have been warned.

Allrighty. Desperation Chapter 2 is finally complete after nearly a full weekend of continous testing. I've tried my very best to make it as perfect as possible, but im only human, so please dont kill me if you find any glaring errors.

It requires SCP to run, and comes in two varieties.

EDIT: It appears an unknown bug is causing campaign file corruption, or the one in the .vp appears to be corrupt.

Please download the respective files according to your choice and put them into your /missions folder before downloading the campiagn of your choice.

Desperation C 1 + 2 (right click and save as into your /missions folder)  (//www.game-warden.com/singh/Desperation.fc2)

Desperation Chapter 2 (right click and save as into your /missions folder (//www.game-warden.com/singh/DesperationC2.fc2)

the first is just chapter 2 alone. this is for those whom have played Chapter 1, but don't wish to play through it again. Included in the file is a .vp holding the missions, the new music.tbl and some new music (all in .ogg format) as well. It is around 9mb.
Chapter 2 (//www.game-warden.com/singh/DesperationC2.exe)

The second is a combination of chapter 1 and 2, for new players who may have not played chapter 1 before. Since the file only includes 7 more missions when compared to the Chapter 2 file, it is around 9mb as well.
Chapter 1+2 (//www.game-warden.com/singh/Desperation.exe)

For those who don't know what it's about. Desperation initially follows the story of a task group stuck within the nebula beyond Gamma Draconis. We play part of alpha wing, who is sent to make contact with the task group and try to get them out. What follows is a tale of desperation and terror as the group is whittled down to only a few survivors as they try to escape the shivans. In chapter 2, they escape the fog, only to find themselves continuing on the road trip from hell.

I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I did making it. :)

in the next two posts, I'll put up the screenshots once they finished uploading. Kudoz to Matthewpapa for the webspace :)

Sometimes having too many bombs can be a bad thing, especially when GTVA interceptors blow 'em up right next to you:

The Interception becomes hectic as everyone tries to kill everyone else, but instead getting squished up and colliding. But as long as it gets the job done....

Spoiler:
In the mission where the Julius destroys the Demon, and the Typhon + Fleet jump in, it says "Downloading new orders", then the mission restarts.

odd...it went through properly for me :/
Looking through FRED, all the events are lined up properly, and it should go through without a problem.

This is odd...if your using 3.6.7, I recommend you switch to an older build  - I had some problems with 3.6.7 with some crashing, so it could just be that. If it doesn't go through again, tell me and I'll see what I can do.

edit: I tested the mission out - it went through normally with no problems at all.

Hmmm, just tried the first mission of the Chapter 1 + 2 pack, and i'm seeing a lot of graphical errors on the Orion model. By that, I mean there are pieces of the model missing, exposing the innards...

...i'm using Galemp's model, and it seems to work fine outside that mission (at least, in the Tech Viewer)...

That...hmm....I doubt that's something to do with Desperation though...the Orion worked fine for me - and I'm using Galemp's one as well :/

Is it the nameplate texture only or the entire thing? Either way, redownloading the destroyer might fix it....try shifting off 3.6.7 if you can though - it caused some problems with the campiagn during testing that didn't appear with earlier builds.

SCP required?

D'oh. :(

Well, good to see that you're still working on this. I enjoyed Chap 1 a lot, and it looks like this is going to be just as good. :)

Are you sure you've uploaded the right .fc2 file?  It won't open in the campaign editor, and DMTools' Text Viewer only shoes the first 4 missions in the file.  I think you might have uploaded the Beta version's.

im pretty sure its the right .fc2 file. Which one did you download? the combination? or just C2? just in case, i'll reupload both, to  be on the safe side.

This is great fun so far. There's a few spelling mistakes here and there (like 'quite' instead of 'quiet') but nothing too drastic. However... the fourth mission restarts upon completion, like kie said. I checked the campaign file, and only the first four missions are listed. I downloaded the Chapters 1+2 file and its campaign file only seems to have Chapter 1's missions in it.

argh.

This is VERY odd.

I opened the fc2 files from this end, and it shows up as normal - I even re-uploaded the darn thing from scratch after copying and pasting the new file over, just in case!

Its working fine on this end, so I really am at a loss as to why it isn't working. Seriously, I've tried just about everything, but I don't know why its showing up like that.

Just in case though - here are the .fc2 files straight off my /missions folder. I'll add it to the first post as well.

WTF?

I opened the file in campiagn editor, and all the missions are there, but when I open the file using text, it doesn't show up!

Why is FRED2 so screwed up????

I'll try creating a new campiagn file using an older build.

EDIT2: Hmm, checked the VP and I actually seem to have a full set of missions in here... phew. Just the second campaign file that's AWOL. Not partial or corrupted or beta. Just... not

OK, everything was being re-uploaded. Its finished now, and the campaign files should work as I hoped.

Re-download the files to allow it to work. If you don't feel like donwloading the entire package, just download the .fc2 files and it should work properly.

Just finished it. Nice ending. Overall the missions were enjoyable and the story was pretty interesting - I'm looking forward to the next chapter.
Spoiler:
I liked the whole thing with the extremely potent fuel from the gas giant.

Wasn't any music in mission 5 though. I'm not sure if that's just me, but mission 4 had a custom track too and that played fine (nice choice, by the way).

Just a note, there have been several instances where i've jumped out a minute too early (ie. before the other capships have jumped), namely as the "Jump Out" objective came up, and then i'd get the failure debriefing; 'You didn't do what you were told, so everybody died...' (not exactly the most creative debriefings known to man :p)...

...Here's the thing though, even with that failure debriefing, you can still advance to the next mission unhindered. Of course, i'm not complaining, as it's saved me from having to do an entire mission again after completing it just for jumping out seconds too early. But still, something you should look in on...

...This bug applies to both chapters 1 & 2...

EDIT: Hmmm...this actually applies to all forms of failure. No matter how badly one fails in a mission, one can always proceed to the next...

EDIT2: Just got around to finishing it, and i've gotta say, that was a quality campaign. A good cliffhanger ending to keep us enthrawled until the next chapter is released, for which I for one will be waiting in anticipation. Nice work!

GAH! I thought I had fixed this bug, as well as the music not playing one (that was related to a .tbl error). Looks like the advancement bug fix went out when the campiagn file got corrupted!

I'm re-uploading it (again! :( ) in a few minutes once I fix it up properly.

Ah **** this!

I can't get the campiagn editor to even work! Every time I try setting the branch to go to the next mission upon completion of the mission objectives, it complains at me that the last branch for the mission isn't set to true, despite it being so! Worst still is that hte ONLY build that WORKS without corrupting my campiagn file keeps on having the editor hang at random!!

GRRRR!!! Stupid FRED2!!

Thanks everyone. Glad to know you enjoyed it.

Chapter 3 should take a while before coming out though - its going to be from an entirely different viewpoint alltogether, so in essence im starting from scratch plot-wise.

Anyways, the files have been reuploaded and the list of fixes is as below:
Music.tbl fixed - mission 05 should play properly now.
Campaign file fix - missions should restart if you fail objectives or AWOL
Missions fix - changed the head ani for the Julius to match Chapter 1's (surprised nobody picked up on that)

Well, I just finished playing through parts one and two and I quite enjoyed it. I'll definitely be looking forward to the next chapter.

Have you dowloaded the new .fc2 file?  You should.
Title: RELEASE: Desperation Chapter 2
Post by: Singh on September 28, 2005, 05:12:53 am
It was tested THOUROUGHLY before release. As thouroughly as one man could. However due to SCP errors, the initial, PROPER campign file got corrupted after which I had to recreate everything all over again!

If you are using 3.6.7, then its probably that. MANY times the campiagn refused to work properly using 3.6.7. Try using ANY older build that worked last time around - it WILL work with Desperaton Chapter 2, hell, it should work properly even with retail i think (well, perhaps not).

The .fc2 files aren't updated - only the main files have been (no time to upload) but will be updated in the next few minutes (actually you can start downloading it now already) and it should be 5kb or 8kb, depending on which ones your playing.

I'lll add an edit in the first post saying NOT to use 3.6.7. as a fair warning.

Ive had a look at it in FRED2 and the campiagn editor. I can't see any reason why it shouldn't go through at all. I just played through the entire campiagn using the file and It went through ok.

I'm at a loss as to why it isn't working. :/

Just in case though, i've updated the .fc2 files again. Try it out and if it STILL doesn't work, the opinion of osme of the FRED masters might be needed :/

Depths Of The Abyss is the second mission of Part 2, isn't it? Funnily enough, with the updated .fc2 file I was fine until I hit that mission. But that mission ALWAYS CTDs me, usually during the first wave of bombers, although I got through to the second wave once before FS2 barfed. WTF?! :wtf: Looks like some bizarre 3.67 issue, but if High Max isn't having any joy then it may be some kind of general SCP problem, but in that case why isn't it affecting all users?! Sadly, that's all I can add for now - PC with FS2 went boom just after this happened (unrelated issue) and my old PC is so unstable playing most games I'd probably get lots of CTDs that were NOT FS2's fault at all...

Solitaire: Its definately 3.6.7.

I crashed using 3.6.7. on that mision, as well as the fifth mission of chapter two. I dont know WHY it does that, but it just does.

High max: as long as the Julius departs alive, the mission will go through, regardless of what else happens. You are forced-jump out ONLY if the Julius dies, but thats about it.

The mission objectives are to protect the Julius and the other is to destroy bombers. To advance onto the next mission, you only need to protect the Julius.

I dont know WHY it isn't working. I just ran through the entire thing perfectly fine. It can't be the BoE syndrome either, sicne Mission 5 has double the number of fighters and it ran perfectly fine. It definately ISN'T the mission though, since it was the most heavily tested one (mostly due to dialogue changes) of the entire lot.

Ill PM Karajoma regarding this, perhaps he will have a better idea. Do both of you mind posting your PC stats here, so that I may go ahead and mantis the bug or at least report it?

I played through this campaign with hardly any trouble at all (just the thing with the music not playing for mission 5 of part 2) on 3.6.7... and I didn't have to use any of the posted .fc2 files either since there's already one in the campaign's .vp.

I hit the same problem as High Max on "Depths of the Abyss".  On the .fc2 file that I downloaded from this thread (Ch1+Ch2), there appears to be a logical error in the conditional check for proceeding to the next mission, after Desperation-C202. Basically, if you open up the campaign file, around line 183, you will see that it checks whether the goal named "Guard" is false or the goal named "Destroy" is true. It will make you fail the mission if any of these is the case. This means that if you destroy the enemy fighter wings, "Destroy" becomes true and you fail because of that. Basically, you fail for completing a primary objective. Try changing manually (e.g. using Notepad) line 183 of Desperation.fc2 from
Code: [Select]

183-> is-previous-goal-true
            "DesperationC202.fs2"
            "Destroy"
              (true)
to
183-> is-previous-goal-false
            "DesperationC202.fs2"
            "Destroy"
;             (true)      <----- I don't think this is really needed.

It worked for me, hope it helps others too.

Sorry to throw in another bug confirmation, but I also experienced the problem with mission 3 of part 1 continuously re-looping.  This is with the Ch. 1+2 combined VP file.  I initially tried running it with one of Goober's builds from about a month ago, which had always been very stable for me, but the thing always CTD while loading mission 1.  I don't know if there's anything you can do to fix it, or if it's just 3.6.7 being screwy, but I thought it would be good to report nontheless.  I'll keep fooling around on my end to find something that works; I can remember how awesome this campaign gets further on, and I'm really impatient to get there. :p

Noted and updating now. I believe I might have found the cause for the crash in Mission 02 of chapter 2. It appears the is-goal-false has an additional line (true) that shouldn't be there. I would recommend re-donwloading the campiagn files, as I have fixed this bug now.

Nuts...even with the updated campaign files, it's still not letting me past mission 3.  I've gotten to the point where I think I can play it with my eyes closed. :p Guess I'll just resort to the old five-warpouts trick to get past it.  It wouldn't make much sense for 3.6.7 to be causing it, unless it made some changes as to how campaign files are read, and I can't see a reason why that change would have been made.

Just another update:  I managed to get past mission 2 by jumping out 5 times, but once I finished mission 3, it started repeating itsefl as well.  Who knows; maybe there's some bug that just involves red-alert missions.  I'm trying out your latest .fc2 file, so hopefully that will finally solve things.  If not, it looks like I'll be doing a lot of jumping. :p

Edit:  Once I got past the red-alert missions, things started getting better, but now I have a new problem.  Whenever I jump out in the "deja-vu" mission (5, I believe), I receive a mission failure, even though everything went perfectly in said mission.  I guess I should have taken your warnings about not using 3.6.7 seriously. :p It would probably be a good idea to make a Mantis post linking to this thread, so that everything that's going on that can be attributed to 3.6.7 can be recognized and fixed.

I even tried flying as a bomber instead of a fighter for that mission with no change. Also, in that mission, there are quite a few instances when I fire my primaries at fighters or bombers and the shots go right through the ships without even hitting them. What the hell is wrong with this mission? Is it only happening to me and no other person who downloaded this? Please have a person on the board analyze that mission "Depth in the Abyss". there is nothing I can do now and I doubt creating a new pilot will have any affect because this problem is a mission problem.

I also notice that if the Julius goes down, my subspace drives activate themselves and I can't abort the jump. Is it set up so that for example, if the Julius' hull integrity goes below 30%, I can't proceed to the next mission even if it survives?

I have no choice now but to play each of the missions after this one by using the mission simulator :sigh:

I have this same problem

Yes, you'll need to redownload.

I think I updated the files before I left to M'sia, so do try them. The changes I made in notepad were to Mission 5, where the objectives weren't valid (again dont know why it didn't capture the change in Fred2 >_<). Everything should have been edited properly by now. Either way, if it still doesn't work, there is nothing that can be done till next weekend, when I can get back to my PC.

Mongoose: Problem has been fixed. just download the mission file in a few posts earlier, it fixes everything :)

Hudson: Avoid usage of 3.6.7, maybe redownload all the files again - especially the mission files. It's fixed a lot of bugs.

Depth_charge: Deep blood? Which campaign is that??

Anyways, the plans for Chapter 3 are all underway and FREdding will begin immediately once I get back to s'pore. Either way, I can promise a good experience next time around :)

I've discovered a little bug in FRED. Campaign files seem to be saved in Freespace2\Data\Missions regardless of where you try to save them.

Check that the reason FS2 isn't crapping up your campaign file isn't cause of that.

Hudson & High Max: Could you try my latest build (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,35688.0.html) and see if the same thing happens, I bumped some limits to try and fix the weapons-through-ships problem.

A random question, Singh... do you have the complete versions of the songs used in part 2 missions 4 and 5? Or is it criminal to distribute those? :nervous:

Yes.

For the first; its two songs, actually. For the second, its one.

If you want both, drop me a PM and we can make some arrangements :)

Not necessarily criminal. The slower and more dramatic music was taken from the theme of Requiem for A Dream, and the faster battle music was one I sent to Singh for GTI: Drums of Gaugamela, from Alexander, though the ambient music is Preparation from the same soundtrack.

I also have all three full tracks if you need them.

it looks like i've found that error, singh.

i think that the goal-fase for the ravana objective should be goal-true. try that out and see if it works. :)

[EDIT] or change the branch to make it like so:

-is-previous-event-true
--jumpout

umm, High Max, i'm talking about Chapter 1.

[EDIT] AHA! i found the problem for the repeating misison problem, singh!

looks like my previous assessment was wrong.

Spoiler:
see, here you have the mission set to repeat if the goal Defend the Fleet is failed. And the GTD Nova is destroyed, so the objective is failed anyways.

so, you have set the wrong SEXP for this. if you delete the repeat mission if protect the fleet is failed, we should be able to progress through the campaign. unfortunately, i'm not sure how to change the repeat-mission SEXP to something else without accidentally screwing up the campaign.

[EDIT2] I fixed Mission 3's  repeat mission error, but now mission 4 has it. i'm gonna have to go through the entire campaign and fix the SEXPs, since it's clear that all the missions have it. (not that 'm calling your FREDing sucky, Singh. :))

Hello... I'm new to all that SCP thing... I just thought I needed some new FS2 campaign to play, and came accross all those SCP updates and all... I installed this campaign in my root folder ; then, when I select the campaign in the game, and try to go in the Ready Room to start, I get a 'Attempt to load the mission failed' error... Do I need anything else than the .vp file? I also got the whole media pack files... still won't work...

Any way to get around that bug of the mission repeating? (Also, the mission just before the one that repeats is kinda buggy too... The debriefing said I had done a good job and everything, but I had to replay the mission...)

I'll send a PM to Singh telling him that there are still a few bugs in the campaign file and that Cobra is fixing them.  He'd probably want to know about it.

im working on it as well - but wont be able to finish it anytime soon. IM in the middle of a jobhunt atm, and although i have some time, there is simply not enough to play through each mission again.

Thank you for your help, Cobra. If you can get it done within a week's time, then go ahead. Otherwise I should be able to resolve it myself :D

Luckily I happen to have the chapter1+2 file on hand.  *Clears out space to host*  Unfortunately its Geocities so I had to split up the downloads.  My sincerest apologies.  Also, this is the buggy version, so you might have to resolve the errors yourself until Cobra or Singh make a more updated version available.

http://www.geocities.com/gundamvsff/music.zipĀ  First batch of music files
http://www.geocities.com/gundamvsff/Music2.zip Second batch of music files
http://www.geocities.com/gundamvsff/Music3.zip Last batch.

Just plop the files into their appropriate folders.  Please note, this will require SCP to run.

The missions and tables downloaded fine but the music was all forbidden for access for some reason.  Hopefully it'll work fine w/out em.  Thanks for the links.

Update, I've fixed the error on mission 3 of Ch1 where the mission repeats.  I had to modify the campaign file, and I've now made it available for download.  I can't vouch for any other errors just yet, but at least mission 3 is now completable.

Naw that's ok, I got 2 of those and i have a hotmail account too...about 5 gigs of space or so filled almost lol.  Anyway, I was looking through an old harddrive and I found desperation in what looks to be a self extracting exe file.  I think it has the music included with it.  If i wasn't restricted to dialup i'd upload it somewhere to be obtained.
