Now I have really begun to use Media Player 10 instead of winamp. I am actually impressed with it. Especially ever since winamp has gotten so buggy. The ripping ability is great especially since I own all my music. :p Although the interface, like all of XP reminds me of fisher price toys. The actual interface in my opinion is great. It would be wonderful is it fully supported CATV over a Capture card.

Both are bull****.
www.videolan.org
and the Media Player Classic with the Communist Codec Pack (CCCP really).
I'll get a link in a sec.
http://www.kickassanime.org/wiki/index.php?title=Compack
Those work best for me as far as media players go.
I'm quite sure that the two of them combined (VLC and MPC) are in all respects better than WMP and Winamp.

I'm going to have to go with Blackdove on this one: Media Player Classic.
Personally, I hate library software. I don't want software that's going to organize my music and make playlists and the like. I'm... hands on. I'll just queue up a song I want to hear right now or tell it to play everything in the "Bad Religion" tree, or whatever. The most automated I get is when I use rsync to merge my music tree on my server with my player.
-
iTunes! I love the way the library works and the search and everything... it took me a while to get used to it when I switched over from WinAmp but that sorta went downhill so I made the change. I never really liked Media Player too much... just doesn't do it for me.
-
Winamp with the classic skin/interface works fine for me. It's small, fast and does what I need it to do effectively. I don't care about libraries or even playlists for that matter; I just want lots of supported formats, an equalizer and a simple interface and Winamp fits the bill there. The support for mod type files isn't that great though, so I use Modplug Player for those.
-
I stick with winamp. Quick, simple, effective. Doesn't give me any trouble, doesn't try to map out my whole music collection or recommend me songs or anything like that. Just plays what I drag into it. Don't see any reason to switch, so I don't.
-
Winamp is limited though, as far as playing music media-types goes.
http://www.foobar2000.org/ is the answer though.
Not as shiney with the skins and all that crap, but it's down to its basics, effective and quick. Way more versatile as well with the consideration it's open-source.

WMP10 is like iTunes but with video/picture viewing.

For quick audio listening, I use Winamp. I have it set as primary association, and it loads nearly instantly. However, when I watch videos, or when I want to use my PC as a media player, VLC is the only one I will use.

Hmm, this might be good for my laptop. :)

I use Windows Media Player Classic for video playback and foobar2000 for audio playback. Prepare to be assimilated, resistance is futile.

...it's good for anything really.
The only reason I don't use it COMPLETELY is because I need Winamp's hotkeyes, and I'm too lazy to figure out the ones on foobar.
Winamp has the nice hotkey setup so I can ctrl+alt+anybuttonabovedirectionalkeyes and manipulate the list while I'm in a game (usually FreeSpace heh).
Foobar is essential for me though, since I listen to a lot of Anime music that comes in .flac, etc. but also for the BlackWater Operations music that comes in .ogg
Yes, I could make a mess with Winamp's plugins to somehow get it to play them, but I don't feel like overexerting myself, and really, having both of them is good enough for me :p

Winamp 5 with the MMD3 (http://www.winamp.com/skins/details.php?id=122902) skin (which is incredibly sexay :p) works great for me for any audio file and most videos. Dynamic Library (http://nunzioweb.com/joonas/dl/) is a godsend of a plugin; it mirrors your file directory, which is infinitely more useful to me than any sort of media library, since I have a well-organized music folder and very little tag info on artists. Plus, combined with Real/QuickTime Alternative and a few plugins, I don't even have to worry about either of those crappy players anymore. Besides, any media player that has plugins to play NES/Gameboy/Genesis/N64 sound files automatically gets a great deal of respect in my book. :D
For the anime episodes that I have...um...acquired...I use Media Player Classic. The built-in subtitle options are great (even with the plugins, I could never get them to display in Winamp), and it's handled everything I've thrown at it (such as OGMs, MKVs, and a few AVIs that didn't want to play nice with Winamp for some reason) very nicely. I was most impressed with the fact that it was all pretty much contained in an .exe and a few config files; it's very compact. :)
The only thing I used to use Windows Media Player for was ripping CDs, but now that Winamp's latest version supports ripping to WAVs at decent speeds, that plus LAME seems to work a lot better for my needs. Failing that, I can just use CDBurnerXP Pro (http://www.cdburnerxp.se/), a great open-source disk tool.
P.S. If I may ask, why do so many people seem to like iTunes? I've seen it used, and it doesn't look any different in the least from WMP.
-
As far as ripping CDs goes, I'd suggest dbPowerAmp (google for it). It's mostly for file conversion, but there's a more-than-decent CD ripper included with it. (Plus if you install a new codec, it'll work for both conversion and ripping)
-
Videolan/Media player classic for vids and Foobar20k with ColumnsUI for music.
-
I use winamp for music mainly just because there are more irc plugins for it than for WMP :p
ZoomPlayer for the videos.
-
I use winamp because I'm too lazy to change. After all, all it needs to do is play music........
-
i use winamp 5, i like its media library better and it doesnt have all the bloody security holes in it.
-
Winamp 5.x for music (I love the Media Library; I just wish it could sync with my iRiver h320) and Media Player Classic for video (incl. DVD).
Regarding iTunes, I don't like how large its interface is. Plus I've never had an iPod nor felt any need to replace Winamp, so perhaps I never gave it a proper chance, but I don't care.

There's a plugin to do that I thinks, check the winamp website.
-
Winamp 2.71 for music.
BSPlayer for video.
WMP my ass.
-
WInamp for Audio(Jump, Jump) VLC, Media player Classic and BSplayer for video.
-
Winamp with the Invicta skin, so it's minimized to the bar on top of my screen. Gives me some problems when viewing videos occassionally, but otherwise, it's great.
-
[color=66ff00]I use MPC for vids and DVD's on windows, winamp 2.91 for music (it's light, fast and has a plethora of good skins which just happen to be entirely compatible with XMMS).
On *nix I use mplayer which is probably the most reliable player I've ever seen. It'll play just about anything you throw at it including DVD's (the lack of menu handling is a bit of a bummer though). XMMS handles all of my music.

I've used Winamp in the past and I find it has better sound quality than WMP, but after my last reformat I don't have Winamp anymore and I'm too lazy to download again on dial-up. Besides, WMP has the cool minimized miniplayer and its the only player that interfaces fully with my hotkeys on my keyboard

Winamp rulez...

FLAC and OGG plugins have been available for WinAmp for years.
I use WinAmp 2.95 for audio (anything after that is bloatware), and Media Player Classic for video.

Green Software's GSPlayer!
Great on the PPC (for audio) and the Win32 port is tiny!
Seriously though I do like Winamp 5. WMP has never really bothered me much for video playback, but I have wanted something that doesnt take up as much resources when watching one of my Divx rips.
