Celtic mythology. Enough war gods for a thousand mods. Where did you think Cernunnos and Morrigan came from?

British warship names are way better.

HMS Dauntless, Devastation, Invincible, Furious, Glorious, Indefactible, Illustrious, Belfast, Howe, Warspite, Fearless, Agamemnon, Agincourt, Audacious, Bellerophon, Hermes, Hood, Royal Oak, Benbow, Tiger, Courageous. And Dreadnought  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

But I'm using Celtic names.

You mean classes like Ulysses or Hercules? How bout using Native american names or something??

I think it stands to reason that eventually we're allways going to run out of names for ships, weapons or whatever because there's a finite amount of words that will work as names for mods. This is not including all those names that sounds Vasudan or Kilrathi or whatever.

Did you actually look there?  It's got basically every ship ever made there.

Bastion, Galatea and Colossus are three examples that you can find there.  Oh, and they sound familliar....

I think that for ship CLASSES, you should stick to mythology...but for the actual names of individual ships, you can go all over the place.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Well, TFoN ("http://koti.mbnet.fi/jabu") is featuring the GTCv Indium, Deimos Adv. class.

And its sister ship, Iridium. But that doesn't live long  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

If we're claiming names, then I'm taking;

SOCv Rapier
SOC Viper
GTF Vesuvius
GTT Trojan
GTT Vela
SOF Selkie
GTB Echidna

unless they're used  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

Echidna is used
Anyway, all this begins to sound stupid. You claim a name only when you've a model doan, that's pretty obvious to me... Otherwise I claim all the names not taken yet, nah!

Well, as we're taking ship names...

Indium, Iridium, Elihud, Prophet (though that's likely to have been used), Amminadab, Rehabeam, at least  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

Naah... use them if you want. They're all featured in TFoN, but not as ship classes.

Pantheon is fine, I just wish I could search it with my mind. I mean, I went looking for an explorer in Celtic mythology, for a ship's name, and couldn't find much.

Pantheon needs more Kalevalaic heroes too.

If you're really lazy or have no knowledge of obscure mythology, just make up names- do you really think that in 1000 yrs. they won't have new legends and languages that you can make up?

DSC Savoyed
CF Calatsia

Just to name a few ones that I thought up and threw away for LB.

Norse mythology is good for Shivan craft, and relatively unused.

SC Jotun

Or, you can just use old military names- an approach  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/v.gif) actually used- the Typhoon, for example, in an actual old torpedo or something similar.

And finally, when in doubt, just name it Stryke.

Wasn't the Jotun the name of a Vasudan gas miner that Alpha 1 needs to protect?

And  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/v.gif) never usd Typhoon; the Vasudan capital ship is Typhon, with a single "o". But that's nit-picking.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

You know, I don't think I've ever ran into a naming conflict when dealing with mythical names.... Alcyone; no, Norn; no, Dante; no, Megaera; not as far as I know.

Amusingly enough, the one naming conflict was the Wasp, which I have to finish the skin for.

In my campaign, GTA is 100 years older, so it changed of naming convention, and I use biblical names for the fighters (ezechiel), or names that sounds like it could be in the bible  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) (raziel). Those names sounds cool to make a nice "end of the world" feeling.
