Title: Programmer's Pay?
Post by: Primus on October 02, 2005, 03:56:42 am
Seems this info is hard to find... But how much do programmers get paid?

I'd say top notch M$ coders get a nice a big check, but what about average coders pay?

Oh yeah, this is for a schoolwork. :)

depends, but from what I understand, $50,000 is a fairly safe bet.

We pay our programmers:

£25,000 a year + benefits (Depending on exp it can be around £42,000)

Hope that helps :)

Graduate level; £16-20k, except for London (which is about 18-25 due to higher living costs)

3 years exp; about £25-35k

Computer science majors straight out of UT or A&M (universities in texas) ususally get paid anywhere between 100k - 120k per year from what I understand. I would imagine that it increases as your experience and expertise in the field grows.

http://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oessrcma.htm

That website lists wages for various jobs all over the US.

Interesting link. Mathematicians in scientific R&D are listed at $104k starting, which sounds decent. Although I'm not sure how credible this is given that they seem to be mixing up physicists and physicians. :D

I wonder why US wages seem so much higher than in the UK for this field; is there a shortage of people or something?

I'm getting paid about £6.50 an hour for .NET development, which comes out at about £13000 per year. Thing is, mine's only really a holiday job, and I can't work more than about 10 hours a week during term.

They're falling around here from what I hear, as there is currently an excess supply of programmers from the '90s internet boom.

I believe our starting people get 60ish (USD).

It depends on the person, the experience, and the location. Boston and NYC salaries tend to be higher because of the higher cost of living, for instance.

I think that's lowish, although it's likely due to the whole part time thing.  When I was working full-time, I was on £300 a week

I don't actually know how much I'm making (I'm working part time at the moment, 2 days a week), but it's barely above minimum wage at best.  The plus side is that, if the company gets the investment they're seeking, I've been promised a proper wage level, full time job.  And it's a good business area they're working in (i.e. they've got a really strong niche, in a rapidly growing field), so I'm hopeful I won't be in this position next year.

Of course, Scotland is really a better place for C/C++ programmers due to the games and embedded system industry, rather than Java.  Mea culpa, I s'pose; I was going to do an MSc with a sprinkling of C++ and some other variations on my degree, but there was no funding forthcoming.

Bloody hell.

I want to work over there, then.  My cousin moved to Houston (obviously a different cost of living, but still); he sold his tiny wee 2 bedroom house in Airdrie and bought a monster house in Texas with a huge backyard and losts of bedrooms, with money spare.  It's kerayzee.... a £100k ($150-180k) would barely buy you a 2 floor flat in Glasgow.

Housing in Boston is a wee bit more expensive than that.

You'd be lucky to get a "fixer upper" for 400k

I have a grandmother who lives south of Boston. Nice little Cape house (Cape being the style, not the location). People have bought houses nearby for around $300000, I think.

Yea, in houston all you need to get a hugeass house (3 stories, 4 beds 5 bath) and backyard is about 200k - 300k. The schools in the area are some of houstons best and newest. There hundreds of new suburbs being built on the outskirts that provide a unique opertunity for cheap housing. I would live out there if it werent for my close ties to friends around here (i live in the inner older suburbs.) Still, I have a nice house at that.

I'm almost scared to mention house prices in London.
And the infuriating part is that it is NOT because of lack of houses, it is real-estate Merchants deliberately not putting houses on the market to push the prices of their other ones up.

Let me put it this way, 200K will just about get you a Bedsit in the Suburbs.

[color=66ff00]Yes indeed.

If you're brave you can get cheaper houses over here; there is a direct inverse correlation between the cost of the house and its proximity to 'flashpoint areas' i.e. those where sectarian violence is most likely to occur.

Aye, well Londons in a class of it's own really.  Closest I know of is Edinburgh; someone famously sold a garage (that is, a single car garage with a door) in the city centre for about 50k; single car lockups are something like 25-32k in my 5 second search............
