Is it free?
EDIT: And in case any of you are wondering, I tried plugging it into google, but it came up with a "document contains no data" thing. I guess it is one of those banned words......
-
More info?
-
Ultrasurf is a program that I could use to circumvent internet censorship. I don't know anything else about it and I am trying to find out where I can get it.
-
You can download it right on their website
http://www.ultrareach.com/company/download.htm
-
I can't access their website. Looks like it is blocked too.
-
Here you go, see if this works.
Nothin' to see here officer. ("http://www.penguinbomb.com/rictor/rictor/thingy.zip")
The user guide in Chinese ("http://www.penguinbomb.com/rictor/rictor/userguide_ch.zip") and English ("http://www.penguinbomb.com/rictor/rictor/userguide_en.zip").
-
What kind of censor are you behind? School? What kind of sites are blocked?
-
He's in China, which means the censor is probably pretty damn sophisticated. However, I think it's encouraging that the company has a manual in Chinese, which probably means they're on top of the situation.

I'm behind what the government here calls "The Great Firewall". The entire country is behind it.
Basically it blocks Falun Gong related stuff, the BBC, and a few other things too.
Ultrasurf is designed to circumvent it.
Rictor: Thanks. I was able to download the one with the exe, but I couldn't download the english user guide for some reason.
-
Don't get arrested.
And Rictor could try renaming that file, see if they check the filenames.
-
Okay, try here ("http://www.penguinbomb.com/rictor/rictor/userguide_en.doc"). It's the manual, unzipped to .doc format.

I did. Now it's just called "userguide_en" which should be innocent enough.

Bit of a bugger that, eh?
If you have any probs getting stuff, I'll try and - depending on size, of course - mirror on either my website or temporarily on somewhere else. It'd be fun to be censored by the Chinese government, after all - make me feel special :D
(and I'm not the only one here, obviously.......)

Still got a page can't be displayed error.
I'm interested in the program mostly so I can see the BBC again. I don't care much about the other stuff.
-
No, that's my fault, I forgot to change the link. Try it again, I edited the post, it should be a .doc not a .zip.
edit: if it's the BBC you want, Firefox has the BBC newsfeed built right in, default. Maybe RSS feeds circumvent the censor? I don't know, it's worth a shot.
-
Got it, thanks.
EDIT: Pardon me for sounding incredibly stupid, but how do I use the RSS feeds?
-
With Firefox, every time you go to a website that has one available, there is a little orange button in the bottom-right of the browser that says "RSS". You just click it and you're off. Though the BBC feed comes built in, like so ("http://img365.imageshack.us/img365/483/likeso7kq.jpg").
-
Still can't use the worldserivce :(
EDIT: I have another idea. I found a website called proxy 4 free. Maybe I could do something with that......
-
/*hears the sound of the red army on the move*/
are you sure this is such a good idea?
-
Screw it. I'll just ask one of the other english teachers how I can listen to it on shortwave (yes, they do listen to it on shortwave). I'm just too damn lazy to put any more effort into it.

The Chinese only really give a **** about their own citizens, i.e. the people who haven't heard of such concepts as 'democracy' or 'freedom of speech'. If they were worried about a foreigner, they'd probably just expel him/her.
-
yeah, well I'm not sure I'd be willing to risk it if I was liveing there.

Besiides, there's all that deviant pornography that the FBI is supposed to be starting to filter. As long as it doesn't involve a political discussion of democracy, that should be available, right? :p

Morally degrading, so, er, no. Poor bastards can't even get porn. Well, they're not suppossed to anyways - but any firewall against smut is like holding up a bedsheet to block a tsunami.
-
No dictator... no oppressor... can keep a people under unexcited forever. There is no greater power in the universe than the need to be turned on. Against this power governments and entire armies cannot stand. We taught the Censors this lesson once before. We will teach it to them again. Though it take a thousand years... we will be AROUSED.

*watches kosh get deported*

Yes, it is. They can probably get it through file sharing though. Techno-piracy is one of the things China is famous for.

Sweet, I made something work. I am using 2 programs called Tor and Privoxy. Now I can see the BBC news site.
