More vids.

PDZ trailer:
http://media.xbox360.ign.com/media/015/015335/vids_1.html

GoW vid showing of the horror aspect of the game (very, very creepy, but very nice graphics):
http://www.xbox.com/media/games/x05/vid-gearsofwar-x05-001-hi.asx

That should end the debate of whether MGS4 or GoW looks better. GoW looks hella good. People NEED to download this and watch.

It's a good looking game, so let's keep it on the game and games like it, lest the words 'Microsoft whore' come up once again, as has been the sad trend with this type of thread...

Either those first shots were 640 upscaled, or IGN used 30q jpeg compression.  Either way, Those shots look god awful.

It's funny that none of the screenshots look that great yet all of the hands-on previews praise the graphics and the gameplay... I think it looks much better in motion.

Sorry about the bump:

It has become very clear to me that Rare needs to fire its screenshot person. Compare the earlier screens to these camera captures. (a big factor might be that Rare decided to go with motion blur rather than AA and that doesn't show up in screens while it does in vids)

(duel wielding grenades, HELL YEAH!)

Hot stuff.

On a side note, thank God for custom soundtracks because the one in PDZ sucks in my humble opinion. Maybe I've been spoiled by Halo's excellent music.

Is it me, or does it just look like they are releasing the same game over and over in different environments?

Not that it's much different from PC's in that respect.

It's not you. I thought the realm of the generic shooter was still the Pc, but obviously not.  The more I see the stuff from the 360 (less the PS3, because there's bugger all shown for it at the mo - although I expect the same), the less inclined I am to buy any console.  It's all just the same game with prettier graphics nowadays, it seems.

Well thats definately true.  We're seeing alot of FPS games that are in the same vein doing much the same thing.

Its the execution of the concept that is what counts in this case.

Perfect Dark you could argue was just another N64 Goldeneye game (afterall it did come from the same team).  The thing that made PD fun was the atmsophere and the level design.  One mission had you sneaking around the streets and the way you interacted with the people there played quite a bit into what you could and could not do in the level as well as how it played out.

Another mission had you searching the wreckage of a crashed futureistic version of Air Force One.  Another was in an alien spaceship at the bottom of the ocean.

All of them had their unique puzzle and twist that took it above the standard "shoot everything that moves" sort of FPS game that was out at the time.  Goldeneye on N64 also had that.  It was as much about the gadgets and levels as it was about shooting the bad guys and defeating obstacles.

So the question will be if they are able to maintain the charm and style of the original but update it to present day graphics and then take the gameplay a bit further.

Watch this co-op vid:
http://www.xboxyde.com/leech_1752_en.html

It certainly seems to have great gameplay, though I'm sure it would be better on higher difficulties since all of these presentations have the difficulty set low for making the job of presenting the game easier.

EDIT: People who played it described it as splinter cell mixed with counterstrike. Every light in the game can be shot out, so stealth is obviously a factor at some point in the game.

It's so original, you can describe it using 2 other games?

I mean... it's just another generic shooter.  i'm sick of the ****ers, I really am.

Mass Effect makes me wish that Lucasarts as opposed to forcing a KOTOR sequel on a small timescale waited for the XBOX2 and let Obsidian use a new engine. (make it a 3 year dev cycle like KOTOR1 instead of 9 months)

Hell, the same game script (with more time to flesh out the ending as intended) would be awesome in a new engine. Seeing a completely decrepid Ebon Hawk, Onderon's sprawling city, etc.

*cries*

Laptop guns sure are not generic, neither are psychosis guns. Let's not forget the x-ray gun while we are at it. Those seem pretty original to me.

There's always the entirely theoretical KOTOR3...

Mass Effect is a trilogy. Which means if KotOR 3 happens, it's going to be a long ways away.

OK, things you must understand:
1. Bioware is a good-sized company. As we speak, they have two games in development: Dragon Age and Mass Effect. This means, if they do KOTOR3 in-house, they could start it when either project goes gold.

2. They can let someone else do it, as they let Obsidian do with KOTOR2 and are doing with NWN2.

They could have KOTOR3 done with either of their newer engines (Dragon Age or Mass Effect), as well, meaning that Bioware would just have to do some light tweaking and send it to Obsidian.

Meh. It would be awesome to see KotOR 3 though...

Prettied up graphic effects and different colours of bullet do not an original game make.

I mean, you've listed some perfectly dull things and cited them as 'original'.  Laptop gun; placeable sentry gun / or normal gun.  X-ray gun; gun with a different zoom sight.

I don't know what the psychosis guns are, but I'll guess they turn the AI either off or upon each other.  How predictable.

It's the same boring set of features, over and over and over and over again.  sure, you jazz up the visuals, maybe shove in a bit of ragdoll, but it's the same boring concept.  Point...and....shoot.

Let me guess; they'll have a level in a city, and a level in some form of high tech installation.  Oooh, and hovercars.  And exploding barrels!

And it'll all boil down to something with a rolling UV texture.
