Title: October Progress
Post by: Galemp on October 05, 2005, 12:50:45 am
Well, after a long period of inactivity, the wheels are moving again on ST:R. It's good to get working again, but we're reminded of why things went so slowly last time; Goober and I are debating everything from the name of the player's squadron to the types of weapons the Hades uses to whether or not the PVD Pinnacle was involved in the Battle of Deneb. None of it really matters, of course, but we both have far too many ideas.

Many older missions are having new life breathed into them. Old, unremarkable missions like The Wait, The Return to Ross 128, and Cloak and Dagger are full of new dialog, exciting events, unexpected twists and sinister connotations. New missions await to fill in the gaps and extend the scope of the original campaign. Command and Mission Briefings and Debriefings are informative, comprehensive, and tailored to the player's performance. The balance is flexible enough to scale with the skill level, but challenging enough to not bore seasoned players. The overall experience is completely immersive, and the conclusion is deeply satisfying.

Goober and I are really looking forward to releasing this, and we're cooperating as best we can to get it done. We hope you enjoy playing it as much as we're enjoying making it, particularly with fresh eyes and ears. Rest assured, we're aware of your patience, and it will be rewarded.

This should be under the news section on the Port website.

Sounds like a plan.

On that note, if any of you guys have suggestions for squadron names, we'd love to hear them. Remember the player starts out on the Krios as Special Ops and ends up on the Soyakaze as Intelligence.  We don't have a squadron changeover currently, but it wouldn't be hard to add one.

The problem with our current squadron name is that it's very similar to the name of one of our missions.  Both are very good names respectively, but because of their similarity they might cause confusion.

Well, since they're spooks and SpecOps people, How about Wraith, Ghostrider, Phantom...

Seeing a pattern? :D

Here's a whole bunch you can use:

USN Squadron Names (http://www.aeronautics.ru/archive/reference/USN_Squadron_Names.htm)

The best is  VAW-78.... :)

How about Black Omega or something?

Or maybe the 19th Raccoons :nervous:

Black Omega is a B5 thing. It's an elite Psi-Corps starfury squadron.

182nd Blackbirds (I thought of it after remembering about the SR-71 recon aircraft)

125th Desert Foxes (named after a US bombing campaign to halt violence in Iraq; sound like Silence All Voices?)

58th Contras (before this gets political or anything, I'll explain: the word "Contras" is simply short for contrarrevolucionarios, or counterrevolutionaries; maybe a little too obvious?)

96th Nighthawks (named after the F117 stealth fighter)

37th Black Widows (an early name for the above aircraft)

I don't have a number, but how about the Spirits, for the B-2 bomber? Or Lancers for the B-1 bomber, an early low observability design.

But then again the 99th Skulls were not named after an animal....

I noticed that names can sometimes be related to the role of the wing. For example

243rd Sparrowhawks = Interceptor specialists (fast bird-of-prey)
258th Condors = Heavy bomber specialists (Big Bird)
108th Nigh****chman = SOC/GTI Wing (stealthy)

EDIT: AAARGH!! I GOT BLEEPED! It's got a swearword in the spelling. That should say 108th Night-watchman, people.

On Squadron numbers:
In the WWII German Army it was tradition to reserve some numbers - namely the 9-hundred numbers for elite units.

Something similar could be done here too, like using the number zero for spec-ops or intelligence units - kinde like 'They're a Double Zero Unit? God save us, we're all DOOMED!'
(Which incidently is a nice tip of the hat toward James Bond).

...and ridiculous names are things that you either live up to or shame down on.
These have potential:
35th Howling Monkeys
52nd Screaming Weasels

Something of my own:
13th Black Cats
11th Stone(d) Dragons

76th Charging Rhinos - heavy assault squadron?
102nd Mighty Mice - recon/strike squadron?
241st Blackjacks - 'all rounders' perhaps?
256th Vampires - surgical strike squadron?
155th Dark Cobras - fighter/interceptor squadron?
167th Glorious Elephants - heavy/medium bomber squadron?
189th Kamikaze Kites - interceptor/strike squadron?
143rd Anacondas - assault/fighter squadron?
171st Dark Jaguars - Stealth/deep strike squadron?

I don't much like the idea of a Vampire squardron. But that's mainly because a "vampire" in navspeak is an inbound anti-ship missile.

Ok, I' ll chime in, not only just to quote a name but also to once again say...

THANK YOU! as loudly as can be heard for all the hard work you guys have comitted in this, and how it will all work out for the best of us all. We all love FS, and having it been reborn is nothing but miraculous in my book. Now that my nose is really brown :D I can release the names...

23rd Raving Rhinos
11th BlitzPigs (sorry couldn't resist) :D
45th Grumpy Oldmen

59th Howling Hyainas
49th Sitting Bulls
99th Terra Firmas

and the piece de resistance

13th Grateful dead

The 13th Grateful Dead gets the unconditional support of the Joint Chiefs Of Staff and the President of the High Council of Selectah.

As a result, by direct presidential order, the matter regarding the naming of the thirteenth squadron is now resolved without need for further proceedings.

Thank you for your anticipated co-operation.

112th Interceptor Squadron "Angels High"
12th Recon Wing "Phantoms" (Loki/Valkyrie anyone?)
21st Heavy Bombardment Squadron "Hammers"
174th Medium Bomber Squadron "Novas"
307th Heavy Fighter Squadron "Black Death" (works nicely for a specops unit, don't it?)
20th Recon Wing "Eyes and Ears"

And, for a different feel, Vasudan squadron names if you should ever need them for some reason. (Although personally, because Vasudans place such an emphasis on language, I think they only name elite units.)

2nd Scout-Bomber Squadron "Wrath"
129th Fighter Squadron "Steadfast"
402nd Interceptor Squadron "Grace"
42nd Heavy Fighter Squadron "Death"

You could also raid the list of squadrons aboard the Aquitaine.

If the player is part of GTI, then why not make him a member of the 99th Skulls?

On a slightly off-topic note, did you ever fix that Ross 128 mission so it would work under Windows XP, Goober?  I never did get to play it...

Also, this is my first time on the forums in like, a year. :nervous:

I fixed it so it would play, at any rate.  It needed a campaign file.  New version is here:
http://www.sectorgame.com/goober/ross128.html

If you're having problems under XP then that's something different.  Try running in compatibility mode.

Since this seems to be the current ST:R thread, I noticed that in the MTMTE mission, some of the Vasudan messages are half lost in 640x480 res. The "chatter 6" msg is over four lines long in 640x480, and  w/out VO, half the info is invisible. Just figured I'd point it out. Otherwise, brill job.

PS: Whilst nitpicking, how's about four different waypoints for Kappa's departure in the C&D mission? To avoid the amateurish bunching up and following intercollision stuff of the wing, y'know. Just to add that petite touche par excellence.

Oh, and don't talk to us about nitpicking. Please. We've nitpicked these bastards so many times their scalps are raw and bleeding. :blah:

MTMTE is jus' an abbrev of 'Moore Dan Meets Da I', 'fcourse. Hey, 'twas just a 1st impression. Please don't hurt me. :nervous: Oh yeah, the 'bunching up' of ships heading for the same waypoint is not your fault, it's Volition's.

It is four lines long in 640x480.  It needs to be one message because it's one idea.

We are planning voice acting, so it won't be that noticeable.  And you can always press F4 to see the message log.

We've taken care of that.  In fact, we've rewritten that mission about five times.
