Title: Probably been answered before, but, I have to try
Post by: eacaptrichards on October 05, 2005, 09:56:36 pm
Well, I again join the ranks of noob.
I have been modelling capships, fighters, and other vessels for a couple years now.  I have made some for Freelancer, I even tried a couple models for UT, but that didn't pan out well.  It seems my good work comes only with spacecraft.
My question is this....Can I use gMax for everything in modelling a ship for FS2?
I have been looking all over the forrums but can't seem to find a straight answer.
I have picked up all the latest tools at the decent network, I use GIMP for texture making, and I use gMax for modelling, with Milkshape for texturing the models (a trick I picked up for Freelancer).  It all works for Freelancer....but since I can now proficiently texture with gMax, I want to try and stick with one tool.  I do have truespace, but I haven't looked at it yet.
Thanks for the time.

No. Styxx's POF exporter only works for 3D Studio Max.

But you can export 3DS files into Truespace (there's a link to a free download in a sticky thread) and from there set up the hierarchy, without actually having to use the program much. I think Karajorma's FAQ will walk you through the initial steps.

And of course,

:welcome:

gMax is a pretty effectively neutered program, so legally speaking you're on your own getting things out of it.  It's big brother (3ds Max) is really the ideal modding platform for Freespace these days, but it's, er, expensive.

There's a quake 3 Md3 exporter for GMax.

Lithunwrap can import md3s and export cobs (so can Deep Exploration and various other proggies). From there, you can use TS to set up the hierarchy and PCS to pof.

Just finished installing truespace to check it out and.........my god..........
What happened to someone's brain?

Anyway.  I do have a q3 exporter....I dunno.  i think I will think on this one.  So many imports and exports is bound to cause problems, but eh.  If everyone relied on one modelling program.....where would all the fun be :)
Thanks.

If you need any further help check the FAQ.

There's a link to LithUnwrap in there too in case you need it for the quake>>Cob convertion.

You could try using 3D Exploration - that's what I use to get my .MS3D models into .COB format for conversion. There's a free version around here somewhere, try a search :)

I'm starting to think I'm the only one who uses TS 3.2 and likes it.:p

Honestly, the first time I opened it, it was feeling the same (but I see this always when opening MAX, where I have absolutly no clue).

With the time, you get used to truespace, I really started to like it, allthough the newer version are much more flexible in booleans and other stuff. It still can sometimes "make a grownup man cry like a baby" like one of my team-mates once stated :D
