Title: Nexus: Jupiter Incident worth 15 bucks?
Post by: phatosealpha on October 15, 2005, 02:23:07 am
The demo seemed interesting.  A little hard to control, and it didn't show off any of the customization elements that sounded interesting, but it was pretty.  Pretty expensive round here, noticed that they had it for 15 bucks on overstock.  But I seem to remember some talk about it being a big waste of potential, so I'mwondering what you guys thought of it?

Nexus is great, definitely worth the 15 bucks.

The full game is waaay better than the demo.

Nexus has its issues (cliche plot, some missions even more 'puzzle like' than Homeworld) but it is worth it.

Spoiler:
I hated the Vardrags voices. That was my biggest complaint. I did like the Vardrag's music score.

Yeah, the game might not play too well, but it's really more of a simulation than a true RTS, with a lot of focus on just looking bloody good. A mandate in which the game excels. The story may be cliched, the gameplay really gets to be a puzzle sometimes, but it just looks fantastic even on a low end system like mine (GeForce4 Ti4200 & 512Mb RAM)...

For $15 it's worth it.
I think this is a game that could probably do with a FS2 mod. It'd be much better for commanding a capital ship than FS2.

Well, I went ahead and ordered it.  Noticed they had descent 3 + mercs addon there too, if that interests any of you.

If it sucks, well, it won't be the most expensive mistake I've made.  Heck, after buying metroid prime echoes, it won't be the most expensive mistake I've made this month.  And after catacylsm, ORB and Haegomonia all let me down, I'm not expecting them to recapture the magic of Homeworld, but it looked like a fun, different style of romp.

As for mods, I dunno about this one.   Always though Haegomonia would've been nice for that - they had beams, cannons and something that could've been flak.  Unfortunately I get the feeling that game was a right royal SOB to mod.  Too bad too, as I tend to think most of that game's issues could've been resolved with stat changes.

*Spits* ...What was that about Metroid Prime: Echos...?

Eh...well, so far I'm not enjoying it.  Probably shouldn't rag on it too hard, since I'm not far along just yet.  It's just that the dark aether poison environment has made exploration pretty much suicidal, and exploration is what makes a metroid game fun.  Some stupid worm boss is beating me senseless, since I only have 2 energy tanks because looking in corners so far has only gotten me very dead.

Tack on the whole keys thing....well, MP had that too, but at least they waited til the end when you had all your equipment and should've been looking around for all the previously ungrabbable stuff anyway.

Does it get better?

I take it you haven't acquired the Dark Suit yet... well, you seem to be having trouble finding Energy Tanks, and that's understandable, just use a guide; that's what they're there for. The game is really excellent, and a great sequel to the original MP, you just need to give it a little. Trust me, if you found the first areas difficult (on normal mode), you might as well stop playing it now, as you just won't be able to cope later on, when it gets rather difficult (ie. Speed-ball guardian)...

I actually started to mod that game...till I found a exceedingly stupid hard coded limit - only 8 weapon slots (max 4 turres per slot, but only one will fire)

Well, the game finally arrived yesterday.  Overstock ain't the fastest, but they are at least cheap.

I was enjoying it immensely.  Until I hit the second stealth mission.  Not fun.  Haven't managed to get past it yet.

And man, do I wish I could steal ships.  I suppose homeworld spoiled me, since now no space RTS feels complete unless you can play it grand theft capship style.

2nd stealth mission? Which one is that again?

Is that the one where you have to sneak trough a asteroid field towards a station and place sommandos tehre?

Or the one where you have to destroy a specific subsystem on a station before your fleet arrives?

Eh, I've the game, and got bored with it in a few hours.... so... take that for what it's worth.

*so glad he didn't  spend his money on it...*

Between the metaballs and the excessively overcliched characters, I think you should hold off until it gets under $5, and even then there's still a fair chance that you'll want to hit yourself.

Graphics were fun though.

The destroy the specific subsytem on this station and oh did we mention the second you uncloak, three battleships are going to launch every missile in the sector at you before you get your shields up one.

It wasn't too bad a game, from what I had heard it was developed from an engine which was supposed to be designed for Imperium Galactica 3 (Or MoO 4 or something), which never got made.

So If that is true, I guess the game never lived up to it's full potential anyway :(

Well, I beat the mission that was giving me trouble, upon realizing it was one of the few missions where fighters actually do something.

I'm getting towards what I expect to be the endgame now, and it seems to have become completely about superweapons now.

Still enjoying it.  But damn, it's making me wish homeworld looked like this more then anything else.

I hated the demo, though it LOOKED good... So what file format are the ships again? can they be converted? (if so I would seriiously consider getting it now).

I thought IG3 became Haegemonia, not Nexus...? At least Haegemonia has lots of similarities with IG2...

Multiplayer in the demo was awesome. Darting around in a tac-destroyer was one of the coolest things ever.

They were developed by the same people, but no, IG3 became Nexus :) (and was transferred to a different studio, IIRC)

Well, I just reached the last mission.  After having no less then 3 seperate fleets destroyed instantly in a flurry of OMGWTFBBQ instadeath missiles, I think I'm going back to Tron 2.0 for a while.

This game really seems like a very promising engine hampered by terrible mission design.

You should check out some of the mods for it before you completely abandon the game...

That's the Nexus modification forum, with links to several mods covering Star Wars, Star Trek, B5, whatever. The Trek ones in particular look bloody good, so i'd advise you check those mods first...

May look into that.  Wonder how tough the existing SP campaign is to mod.  I suspect with a little rebalancing, it could become at least decent.
