Title: engine swap...
Post by: Stealth on October 21, 2005, 12:58:39 am
I'm bored, and since i already have to replace a lifter in the 6.0 L engine in the cadillac, i decided i'm just going to bite the bullet and do a complete engine swap...

Which to do:

A) 500 c.i. cadillac engine (until recently, the largest V8 to ever go into a serial produced car.  cadillac: 1970-76)

B) 350c.i. Corvette LT1 engine
(http://www.wtfman.com/lolo/83coupe/12.jpg)

the 500 is the easiest to swap, but the lt1 has the most performance upgrades, and the most 'potential', although getting it to fit, and modifiying everything else isn't going to be much fun.  both are 500+ HP, 600+ ft lbs torque

what think?

well.....for me the reason is practical....and i've always been a Big Block Man.  you can get 8 miles to the gallon, or 8 miles to the gallon, and with the price of gas....go for the 350.

but damn if it ain't good to see a thread about a V8 instead of how to make a car sound like an angry bumblebee

Um... best mpg one?

Of course, I just bought a Renault Clio, so maybe I'm not the best person to comment :)

Clio's good. Reliable. Had one for five years, 120 thousand Kms on it, never gave me trouble, never had to take it to the shop other than the scheduled check-ups. And I got an average of 17 Km/l out of it, and up to 20 Km/l on good, level roads.

Which model did you get? I suppose they don't sell the 1.0l models in Europe...?

to reply to all:

Nuke: Actually both are pretty close in weight... the 500 with an aluminum intake manifold will be really close to the lt1

aldo and shadow:  remember this isn't supposed to be practical.  it's going to be a weekend / rape 'ricers' and 'muscle' cars kind of car.

thing with the 500, is it will bolt right onto the engine mounts of the 6.0 i have at the moment.  here's your trivia for the day:  the four cadillac 'big blocks' of 1968+ were the 368, the 424, and 474 and the 500.  all four engines had the exact same external dimentions... the block was identical, the only thing that was different was the bore size, etc... so the engine will drop right in the place of the 6.0, and bolt right up to the stock transmission (a turbo 400, one of the best transmissions in the world to date... still used on tons of hotrods).  the biggest 'modification' i'd have to do would be replace the cooling assembly for the bigger engine.  with the 350, there would be a lot more welding and modificating involved, and the cost would probably run me a couple thousand more.

either way i'd be suprised if either one ends up costing less than $8k

And for $8,000, you could probably stretch to something like this:

The awesomeness of your car is inversely proportional to its MPG.  Besides once we run out of petrol, we can always go back to whale oil.

oh ok, didn't know if you were being sarcastic or not :p

i'm actually thinking about getting the 500.

$5500 would probably be the total for the actual engine, that's a 550 HP, 650+ ft lbs torque engine, ready to go in... carbureted (850 cfm carb).  i'm thinking about nitrous injection too... 150 shot.
