I've tried and tried to make some of my own command briefing stuff but I've stumbled upon a rock. I tried to make a "dramatic" explosion of earth. It didn't turn out dramatic at all. The explosion was too fast plus there wasn't any debris left over.
Anybody else know how to make good explosions and possibly make one for me?

Yer right. Not dramatic at all. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
When hunting explosions, it's best to look outside Freespace... I can get you some excessively sweet images to convert to .ani of the earth going firework, but they've got a bigass escape craft in them and you will have to be my slave for eternity, 'cause they're a ***** to get at... (involves the use of most of my remaining hard drive)

I have a better idea: You show me where they are up for d/l and I won't be your slave. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Earth vaporized in a record time of 2.1 seconds by some unseen animator. More news as we get it! Stay tuned for more up to date information on this breaking story!

Animations are bastards to do. They take up so much CPU it's not funny. Hell, even stills take up ages of time.

My god, do you know how ridiculous a planet blowing up in 2.1 seconds really sounds? The Earth is over 6,000 km in radius. That means that the materiel at the center of the Earth would have to be moving at least 3,000 km/s. (probably multiple times that) That also means that the entire mass of the Earth would have to have acceleration of something like several thousand kilometers per seconds. Or several hundred THOUSAND gravities. Not to mention that if even a tiny portion of the Earth's mass is converted to energy, the resulting glow would outshine the sun. So basically, a destroyed planet should be Majestic, perhaps a glow along the edges of continental plates as it ever so slowly comes apart into massive glowing chunks of molten rock. Really, it should take hours or days to be fully disagregated.....

ok, I want to do that... mhh... where is the phone number of my ILM friend? (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

They played POOL with earth
-
use a particle frag system with some glow/noise texture stuff on the inside edges
have multiple cameras and fade them into each other and have a few normal particle systems with glows assigned going off randomly over the surface, make sure they look pretty slow though.
the whole animation should be about 2 minutes long with some nice, slow music.
if you have any other planets in the picture that wont be fragged use NURBS for them as they are far more efficient.

I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired!!

Well the starwars type planet explosions might look cool, not entirely accurate (at all (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) ) but cool nonetheless. Probably would be hard to do.
If you've got a digital video camera I suppose you could place a firecracker (banger) inside a tennis ball that's been painted a suitable blue and green (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

I don't know how to make Truespace stuff.
Plus, the only music source would be the command briefing music because I'm wanting a command briefing animation.
I remember the earth dying in Titan AE. That explosion was sweet and was realistic enough for all those hardcore sci-fi fans. Maybe a little something along those lines would do it.
BTW: If 80 Sathanases can destroy a star just by warping out near it using advanced subspace technology, then why can't Eridanites (who are probably much stronger than the shivans) destroy a planet (which is no where near the size of a star) do the same?

mmh, I've read some stuff, following a chat with Ace... I think you have no idea how powerful shivan really are (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)
-
nope shivans aren't that much tougher than we are if they were then why we whipped there *** twice? and there fighters no better than terran and vasudan designs - you may claim that we got lucky but i would submit that if they were that much more powerful adn superior then we wouldn't have had the opertunity for luck to play a part
also there is very little about shivan ships we dont understand - there drives are better sure but same principle jsut alittle more refined - same with weapons shields and hulls. nope the shivans if they had an advantage its in numbers - 1 colossus versus 80 sathanus's no contest even the numbers up adn teh sshivan win but not by a huge margin and they wouldn't win at all if the colossus's dont part directly in front of the sathanus's
as for blowing up planets -go with the starwars effect - big bang and a shockwave never hurts - unless your on the planet being vapourised
