Despite White House spokesman Trent Duffy's admission to New York Times reporter Katharine Q. Seelye that "more than one Bush staffer reads The Onion and enjoys it thoroughly," the White House is seeking to stop the satirical paper from using the presidential seal on its Web site.

Seelye's seal scoop, printed in Monday's paper, reveals that associate counsel to the president Grant M. Dixton sent a letter to the Onion on Sept. 28 stating that the seal "is not to be used in connection with commercial ventures or products in any way that suggests presidential support or endorsement."

The newspaper parodies President Bush's weekly radio address on its Web site, accompanied by a picture of President Bush and the official insignia.

The Onion's lawyer, Rochelle H. Klaskin, countered the government's letter by saying, "It is inconceivable that anyone would think that, by using the seal, The Onion intends to 'convey... sponsorship or approval' by the president."

Klaskin also asked that the Onion be considered fro an official exception to the rule, which is allowable by law.

The Onion distributes 500,000 copies a week, and three million people read the paper online, according to the Times.

No news is better than fake news.

Tell that to Fox.

Seriously though, I guess I can understand why they want it removed, but it would take a seriously naive person to accept the Onion as a 'proper' news source.

Do you work for Karl Rove?

No wait, that'd be 'fake news is better than bad news'.

Yeah, well some of the people here actually voted for the republican party

Did you know that, as Senator of Masacussets, John Kerry actively encouraged the reading of books?  Do you know how many children die every year from reading books?*  Vote Bush, and save our children from the tyranny of books!
*actual value; none

"Fake" implies intended deceit. If you are mislead by The Onion, you are very tired, very thick, or under the influence of a mind-altering substance.

Ah the Onion; eases the pain.

Used to read it all the time but, I dunno maybe its because I got desensitised to it, not anymore. It seemed to take a big drop in quality.

'Lets take it to five blades!' was the last really good article I remember.

Other than the Bible, that is.  The Bible is absolute truth, even though we don't know for sure who wrote it, or exactly why, or in fact have sufficient supporting evidence for that 'Truth' to support the prosecution of a parking ticket in any other context.

Flames to /dev/null.

I've shown it to some people who got sorta confused and then accepted what they were reading as fact because they were confused until I started dying of laughter and then had to explain why.

I think he got the wrong thread, he did a quote by Twain about how trying to 'fix' the English language would eventually turn it into something incomprehensible, but replied to the wrong thread, one of the risks of multiple browsers on the same site I think ;)

See, I was reading ;)
