For those of you that haven't been there in a while this is an appeal to save the VBB from the Trolls. The quality of discussion over the past week has gone down right off the scale, almost every vet has abandoned that place and the Trolls Spammers and other general fools are using it as their personal playground. We need to get some of the old time vets or just more people who are going to post topics of value back there so we can get some quality discussions going again and send a clear message to these people that a few ignorant kids aren't going t wreck the board. Thanks.

It isnt just the vets, I'm still considered a newbie on the VBB, but I'm not an Immature Little Dumbass™. I realised what was happening and left while I still have my sanity..

Well i think the Vets have done what they could,but the stream of trolls and walking farts is to big and there will alwasy be people that have to spoil others fun, even if we manage to get it clean and fun again..I am maby not a Vet in post counts there but i have been wondering there for more then a year now and i have to agree whit you Top Gun it's horrible.But lets face it we cant do anything whit out the Admins..So i say just leave it for the Admins and don't post any good stuff theere becuase they don't understand it. Heh heh... try the past YEAR... I think that most of the vets left for the same reasons I did... It was fun for about a year and a half after I joined... but the past year, I totally abandoned the place because it had just lost its... feel and direction. I check up on it every month or so, but usually leave again discouraged at the condition. I think that the condition of the VBB is due to the fact that the game is dying, as is Volition's association with the title. HLP thrives because we are built around the "modding concept", which gives the game new life.
If none of this makes sense, just shoot me... I'm still trying to get used to sophomore university classes... at the ungodly hour of 7 am... ugh...

But I disagree about the reason for the board heading south is due to (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/v.gif)'s losing interest in the title as all the other boards for the other games are in a simmilar state.

Its because its unmoderated. If (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/v.gif) had someone there watchin things, laying the smack down on spammers and such, we wouldnt have these problems...

What has the HLPBB not got that the VBB has? (apart from active moderation). I'd like to know if we can improve this forum in any way and generally improve things for those of you who want good service.

The problem is 99,9% due to moderation (or the lack of it) but (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/v.gif) is always too busy in Game developmet and in othe areas to moderate (niether do I belever they really want to moderate)
People have suggested adding a fan mod, but for obvious reasons this wouldn't work. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/v.gif) would have no control over a fan moderator which could potentially be very very dangerous.

I would say a chance to speak to (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/v.gif) but obviously nowerdays that's not the case. If it's suggestions for improvement your after I find it difficult to suggest anything to make this place any better (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) Perhaps PMs?

I agree with you all (unmoderated and such), but we're all forgetting that Top Gun made a General Distress Signal[/i]. As my GTVA colleages of mine will know, we can't just sit idly behind and do nothing. We must attend to this problem the only way we can (and have been asked to do). Let's make some proper threads there.

The VBB is dying because its time has come- there is nothing new to talk about there, except how awful the new newbies are, the sudden increase in worthless posts, and FS3. Everything else, there is a dedicated forum for, but nothing new will happen to FreeSpace that does not involve either FRED or modding, and thus the VBB is limited to being the occasional post site for pimpers and a dump for those who wanna be jerks somewhere [little bow- I know your opinion on me, TG]. At least, until FS3 arrives, if it does. Then the VBB will last a few months to a year, and die again. Sad but true, the only thing left is to move on or find better topics to cover there (basically, make it like the Hard Light forum is here- everyone just talking about whatever). But I warn you if you attempt it- it's not a healthy environment, that last mini-flamewar put me in a bad mood for hours and I have only refused to leave the place period because I'm a stubborn SOB.

Honestly though, I think the VBB is more or less beyond redemption. This has been a long time coming, and this huge push in the last week (as you've described it - as a testament to the VBB's saddening state of affairs, I've just found myself not going there anymore) may well be the donkey that breaks the straw's back.
And yes, I did put that the wrong way. But really the VBB is just not fit to take anything like this - no admins, no mods, no resources at all. It's becoming just a forum, not really a community anymore. The disjointedness that is present in there will be very, very difficult to repair, and probably close to impossible without the joint efforts of most of the vets who are long gone already. Which is, unfortunate as it is, highly unlikely.
I'm not going to tell anyone that it is a useless effort to try and restore the Volition community (ie. a solution to the VBB situation - be it fixing the VBB, or moving to VW, or otherwise), but I am going to advise everyone against wasting time on it. It is my humble opinion that no more can be done. Naturally, I could be wrong... but we have tried it before. And it wasn't too successful.
However, I tip off my hat to anyone willing to try, and wish everyone best of luck. Here's to hoping HLP will stay crap-free as time passes. Just remember that it may be sad and it may be disappointing, but **** happens, okay? And sometimes you can't do anything. So try not to get too caught up in it.
