Title: FS mission archives
Post by: BloodNose on October 28, 2005, 12:05:17 pm
When i try to log to Volition Watch mission archives, i get a message that says "error - file not found". Also, i can't find the missions... Is the site/server down or what?

VolitionWatch is closed down.  I'm surprised you can even find the archives.

Ah, this sucks. Hopefully people have those campaigns stored elsewhere. Titan Rebellion especially was an excellent campaign.

at least they don't have The Jake Wars anymore, do they? ;)

they still have the good MODs (with a couple of dead links here and there) up for download, so i's not a total loss. :D

The Jake Wars are constantly being remade, first there was The Jake Wars (Which was sh*te), then The Jake Wars 2 (Not a sequel, a remake, not much better), Allied Forces 1.0 (remake, never played it) 1.5 (remake, excellent) and 2.0 is currently being worked on.

I've uploaded The Titan Rebellion here (http://www.fileh.com/kietotheworld/TheTitanRebellion.zip), I've downloaded loads of campaigns of VW, so if anyone has any requests, I'll see what I can do.

{shuffles through personal stash}

Funny.  I seem to have stuffed Titan Rebellion into its own .vp file.  Guess I got 'lazy'.

Is your version finished?  Mine isn't, I assumed it never was.

Nope, mine's incomplete as well.

Sort of reminds me of Tech Superiority.  Just a single episode.  (Another campaign I stuffed into it's own VP file.)

You, sir, are a life-saver. It's a crime to let a campaign this good be lost. :)

Weird; all the mods seem to be still downloadable from the Archives, but the mission lists don't appear, and the mission reviews have all been wiped clean.  It's like it was half-deleted.  I know some people mentioned downloading the entire Archives contents in the past; would there be any chance of getting in touch with one of them and arranging some hosting elsewhere?  I know I grabbed several of the campaigns myself, but there were a lot more good campaigns/missions out there that I never got around to taking a look at.

I found the list with a google site search

http://archives.volitionwatch.com/fs2/missions/campaigns.php3

but anything clicked redirects to the same page.

That you did, but I was merely expounding on the situation in a seemingly futile attempt to cover up my thread skimming.  Obviously, it was unsuccessful. :p

true. :p

the VWA had some good missions, but one i never could get to work. anyone remember that 'Raid the beer shipment' mission with all the goofy voices? and the briefing had stuff like "Er, um... *runs to bathroom*" and stuff like that. if anyone has that i'll be greatful, since i'm going to try to see if i get them mission to run in FSO. :D

Slight bump here, but it looks as though the Archives are working correctly again.  They're like some kind of Energizer Bunny. :p

Someone should download whatever's left on the VA archives before they're lost forever. It's a valuable piece of FS history, and should be preserved imo :)

I can sum up the plot as Silent Threat: Freespace 2 edition, in terms that it's about an intelligence-based revolt, but the quality and balance is the best that I've seen in a user-made campaign.

It was just... never... finished... which really bites, IMO.

Hm, well I played it the other week and thought it was a little cheesy, and one or two missions were grossly imbalanced.  It was decent, but I don't think I'd give it more than a 3.5 or 4 (out of 5).

In any case, when you're ranking campaigns for balance and quality, don't forget about Derelict, Aeos Affair, and Warzone. :)

Really? I found the missions to work extremely well for me. Which particular ones were imbalanced? I'll give to the fact that the huge numbers of bombers tends to get a little unbelievable, but otherwise I found it well done, especially the TAG mission.

The bombers are exactly it.  The one where you have to defend the Moloch against about 50 of them, plus a Sobek and Hecate, is quite frankly impossible on anything above Easy.

The one where you have to fly in a straight line for 20 km just to scan a Pegasus with no lifesigns is both boring and frustrating.

The TAG mission, on the other hand, I thought was great. :) It was my favorite mission out of all of them, and the balance was pretty decent too.

I found this one a challenge, but not necessarily impossible. All it requires is being a little more conservative with Trebuchets until the big ships show up. I actually remember beating this mission on the first run on Medium.

The first nebula mission was admittedly a little boring, but as the recommendations show, it was there to introduce The Ship™. I liked the challenge of fighting without shields for a change.
