Title: Good FS2 music
Post by: ToecrusherHammerjaw on October 30, 2005, 10:49:28 am
Here's a thought:  Other than the original soundtrack, does anyone here prefer to listen to other music while playing FS2?  If so, what?  My current preference is Iron Savior.  Listen to them and you'll see why.

Well if im in the mood for Hard Rock i listen to it. Regardles of fs2 or not.

But i perfer fs2 stuff. Cauze FS2 is also the music that comes with it.
The whole feeling or sence of it. Big factor in makeing FS2 great.

Mixture of stuff. Movie soundtracks, mostly, since I'm not distracted by lyrics or anything like that. The Rock, Revenge of the Sith, Requiem for a Dream, and Alexander happen to be the ones I've got on my playlist at the moment.

Battle of Endor music goes quite well with some of the larger battles. :)

Flipside's music. The soundtrack for Freelancer (danger and combat tracks for Bretonia, Omega, Sigma, and Tau systems, music_lair_battle.wav, music_dangerous_chase.wav, music_friendly_encourage.wav, and the Race Start and Race Loop tracks.), EVE Online's soundtrack (the drummix versions of It's Full of Stars and Do You Know Where You Are?, most of the Gallente combat tracks, I Saw Your Ship, ...But Still We Go On, Lost Wormhole, Amongst Allies, Red Glowing Dust), Halo (Covenant Dance, On A Pale Horse, Perilous Journey, the Maw), the soundtrack for the never-released B5 flight sim Into The Fire (Battle Sequences A, B, D, and F), MSX Mix B from Grand Theft Auto 3, Paul Oakenfold (Mona Lisa Overdrive and Right Here, Right Now), the Gettysburg movie soundtrack (Fife and Gun, The First Battle, Charging Up the Hill, Over the Fence), Homeworld 1 (Turanic Raiders Battletrack, Imperial Battletrack, Swarmer Battletrack) and Homeworld 2 (Keeper and Sajuuk battletracks) soundtracks.

Honorable mention for mod music to Scroll's music, the Hidden combat tracks, and Desperation Chapter 2's final mission track.

I tried playing it without the original music.  I couldnt get into it.  Though, I liked the smooth, meliodic tracks of Squarepusher while playing.  Without the original music though, it just doesnt play good.
Though, I really wish I could get FS1 music to run in the FSPort reliably without having to modify each and every mission file.

I consider the music of FS2 to be purpose built to exist with the gameplay...that is infact true as they spent some time with working out how events in the game would concide with musical cues.  I think it works well and the music is memorable for me...I like it enough to keep listening to it.

I can see something like Squarepusher working well as a substitute...but I don't have enough of that yet.

Boards of Canada is in the same vein as well.

I've tried to play winamp while playing FS, but listening to death/thrash/black(yes i have some) metal wouldn't make it real fun between hostiles.  Unreal on the other hand.....

Good to see this thread stayed alive to some extent.  Recently tried "Battle of the Heroes" from Star Wars Episode 3 while doing the last mission of FS1.  Wasn't what I had hoped for, but it was alright. :)

Now that you mention that, I wrote the second-to-last mission of Rogue Episode I to the beat of Battle of the Heroes. Turned out quite well I think.

Another from the "original music is good enough" crowd. But when I get tired of that, I find the soundtrack to mechwarrior 2 works quite nicely. In fact, that seems to work out for most games.

This thread reminds me. The freespace 2 credits music is awesome, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. How can I get it?

Use VPView to extract it from warble.vp.

On a side note, did anyone notice that a track from the "End of days" soundtrack sounds a lot like the FS2 credits music ?
