I can't program for a dime, but from the looks of it    . Demands awful lot of RAM though.

No, I don't think so, I mean, it's too basic (in the graphical sense, it doesn't really live up to the FS2 engine, in my opinion)....
How about Crystal Space?(http://crystal.sourceforge.net/)
I'm not sure if it's free, but it looks much better, especially with terrain, and, as I've heard, FSF will have some terrain battles...
BTW, Kazan, who's working with you on this project? I mean, Inquisitor (sp?) collected the resume's and portfolio's, etc, of a bunch of people, so did you get them? And are you going through them to see who you want to be on the team (if there is going to be one;))
Cheers!

mmh... the engine of Vega Strike is made by players like us, and the pics you can see are test pics. They still have a long way to go, you can't expect gfx like fs2 or wing co prophecy that soon.

I agree with going with Crystal Space. I downloaded some of its samples this afternoon, and found one in particular that showed a very nice looking space scene - somewhat primitive models but it looks like the engine is already quite capable to creating a space sim.

Crystal Space looks a whole lot more developed and graphically capable.  At a glance.  Vega Strike is considerably more primitive, not to discount the effort involved either.

I remember when Vega Strike first went up.  I think I hosted it at WC Network.  Don't remember.  Long time ago :)

Some of the textures look pretty low-res though, at least in the screenshots; would there be an easy way to change that?

CS looks like it's primaraly a FPS engine,
VS looks like it has potental, the only problem with it is all the models are CRAPPY,
is it just me or does it load models as text files

Crystal Space is actually trying to be everything. FPS, sim, Isometric. Which, is good and bad.

I've not seen this Vegastrike, what's the source code look like? Is it easy to compile a working exe? Does it have working netcode? Documentation is key (especially to Daves point about spending more time figuring the engine out than it would take to code one from scratch. You may disagree with him on some things, but the point is valid). How quickly can we have a single custom ship, under player control, in an exe for other people to look at?

A general caution on quality: a GREAT engine can look bad because it still uses programmer art to demonstrate it. My TQ project has got some REAL dog models, badly texture mapped, badly modelled or both. That doesn't mean the engine can't deal with them, just means that I suck at art ;)

Good homework, though, we probably need a score card so we can honestly evaluate the choices based on the same criteria.

Thoughts?
