Title: Beta Website Online!
Post by: Fineus on June 25, 2002, 06:14:16 am
After a few days altering, tweaking and photoshopping I'm pleased to announce the arrival of:

The Freespace Source Code Project (http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/fsscp/)

I stress that this is a beta site. It's not the final and it's certainly not supposed to be to incredible. But it will host all the information everyone needs (in time, right now most of the content still need processing). If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them but keep in mind that it's not built to last to long - I won't make massive graphical changes if it'll only be up for a month or two ;)

Anyways, hope y'all like!

2 things:

1) the news link is 404 :)

2) for the foreseeable future, the downloads will be available thru CVS ;)

We'll figure out a release procedure, but, CVS will always have the latest stuff.

CVS:  Dev. stuff. No public testing. :nervous:

Site downloads: Public betas and finished patches.

No, we'll actually mark builds for public release thru CVS as well.

CVS is the tool that lets "all of us" work together on the same code. There are a couple of good threads in this forum that explain it.

Thunder, i could mirror all downloads if you want

EDIT:  It's a faster connection than 3dap, FSW, etc.

No, we're ok for the time being - to avoid confusion everything should be kept in one place untill things get rolling, then we can add mirror sites as we go.

That may be true right now but we'll see what its like when hundreds of people hit you during the same minute.

Again, source dowloads for the foreseeable future will be thru CVS, including releases. Precompilied exes and the like can go on 3DAP or Gamespy, or wherever (if you compile it, you can put it anywhere you like ;)) but we ain't there yet ;)

at one time we were getting thousands and thousands of hits per day when we were an 'official mirror' for one popular Counter-Strike download, but let's be reasonable... there aren't going to be 'thousands' of people downloading this source code, don't kid yourself!

I mean, sure 3DAP or FSW's servers may be able to handle more than mine when no one's downloading/using them... but there's never going to be a time when that's going to happen, so why not download from an out-of-the-day server running on a fiber-optic connection, that gets only a thousand or so hits per day!

:)

i was just volunteering!

Did someone say T3?  or am i thinking of something else...

also, where are their servers located? how many do they have/

Roger that Command...engaging fusion drives. ETA to the site: 12 seconds

Hmm....Probably should add GCC to the links. For downloads, I'd suggest releasing the most recent reliable build. Otherwise, just point people to the CVS tree.

Hey, Thunder, will there be a list of suggested code mods somewhere on the site so people can refer to that and maybe even vote on what they would like to see?  I know there are posts here, but having a centralized list of them would be nice.

If you're looking for extra hands on webpage dev'g I've done about five years of it.

Yes, we are compiling such a list now, shoudl have it ready by saturday's meeting, and I am investigating automating it so we can get the list online for people to add to it.

And in keeping with that I'm going to be working as hard as possible over the following few days to add any and all information Inq sends me to the site, creating a (proper) FAQ and sorting out moderation permissions for various people around here (IceFire, Inquisitor and considering anyone nominated by them).

For starters, can we get the links that are on fs2source.warpcore.org (CVS and Bugzilla)?

In view of the lack of a dynamic news script, is there a way to link to the 5 most recent threads on the site? I have a php based scraper for UBB, but some of these other boards already have those functions built.

I'll also get the information on subscribing to the developer email list, and once the documentation is uploaded to waprcore. we'll need to link to that as well.

Also, if you could post the contents of the readme from the source under a "Getting started " link, that would rock.

I updated the links and the page a bit at warpcore:

http://fs2source.warpcore.org

On the HLP site, could we get a direct link into this forum?

Where abouts on the main site? (Whilst this is a part of both HLP and VW it is not the new be all and end all... we can't suddenly chuck links all over the place for it).

Oh - and just because I haven't responded to other requests around here doesn't mean I'm ignoring them, I've just been doing things around the house etc... I've seen whats needed :)

Hey Thunder or Inquisitor or whoever does the webpage bit... what's the official website?  is it:

http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/fsscp/
or
http://fs2source.warpcore.org

!?

Technically it's the HLP hosted one - but I should point out that that's only a beta pending IceFires publishing of the proper site on VW, that will be the official site.

The warpcore page is only there in case someone sumbles on it ;)

yeah, i thought that was the original agreement, that VolitionWatch does the hosting and HLP does the forums...

once i get everything set up i can do that for Ice Fire if he doesn't have any time.

i think both should be combined, so someone doesn't have to 'stumble' upon it
