Title: New to using this mod - Need help installing
Post by: Nix on April 18, 2004, 08:47:10 pm
I'm having some problems getting this mod to work correctly.  After searching the forums on how to install this mod, I found that you just place all the .VP  files into your \freespace2\data directory, which I have.  I can load Freespace 2 and select the main freespace 1 campaign but what I'm having problems with, no weapons are showing up in the ship select screen, along with all the ship types available only as the Ulysses fighter.  I'm running a fresh install of Freespace 2 that's patched to 1.2, and I'm not using FS Open just yet,  nor have I installed thier .VP file for FS Open.  If anyone could tell me where to put the files, if they go somewhere else other than the \data directory, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Actually, you just need to put the vp files in your freespace2 directory... you don't need to extract them into their respective directories, n'or does it need to be placed in the data directory.  Just make sure you don't have any other mods installed or extracted copies of the table files, then start a new pilot rather than resuming an existing pilot.  That should fix it for you.

Later!

*deletes the inaccurate posts*

Trivial Psychic has it mostly right - except you don't need to create a new pilot.

This appears to be your problem:

They need to go in the freespace2 directory, not the freespace2/data directory.

Seems that I was "incorrect" saying that you had to extract them.
I had to do that to make it work, but well..

I was not incorrect at all, the mod feature is the way I use it...
I'm really confused and probally taking this better than I should, the only way I can see my post being deleted if somebody doesn't like me

Oh, I wouldn't take it that personally. After all, it was a bit confising. Anyway, I'd rather get a useless post deleted than being deleted all the way ;)

It wasn't incorrect - just inaccurate.  I wanted to make sure the newbie got the accurate information first. :p His first post says that he hasn't checked out fs2_open yet, so he would be confused by instructions to use the mod flag.

Heh, that was easy, the port seems to work correctly now, the login screen is different and the missions now load properly with the old ships and weapons.  Thanks!

I have used Fs2_open before and I am impressed with that project so far.  I REALLY like the lighting and such so far.  Can this be used with FS2_open with the mod flag?  Basically I'd have to make a new folder under the \Freespace2\Data directory to house the mod then select that with the launcher?

Thanks again for the help, I appreciate it!

Nop. You have to create the mod directory within \freespace2\ to house the mod.

Example c:\Games\FS2_Open\FSPort

It could be housed within Data. I don't know if that would screw something up,
but it will make the -mod argument a bit larger :)

/me hopes Goob doesn't delete the post :P

Ok, I tried making a directory in the data directory basically e:\games\freespace2\data\fsport
with all the game files from the website residing in there.  Now, using the launcher (version 4), I select the mod in that directory and I can switch back and forth between FS2_Open and FSport but when I try to play the regular Fs2_open mod, all the weapon effects dissappear.  Strange.  I will try putting the directory like you have it above, thanks!

sounds like you need to enable the jpgtga flag (you know we should probly make that one on by defalt)
