Title: Need ideas for charity fundraiser.
Post by: kasperl on June 04, 2004, 01:25:01 pm
Ok, my schools principal is leaving, and when he was asked what he wanted as a leaving gift, he said he wanted the teachers and students to rasie funds for the Dutch chain of Make a Wish ( http://www.wish.org/ ), a charity for the terminally ill children, giving them one day of their wish. Now, my creativity has run out on how to gather funds. There are plenty of people without a project either, so there isn't much that would be too big. We have untill September 14th to complete the fundraising. There have been thoughts about doing a play to gather funds, but we are afraid that it'll take too long to get everyone organised, and too many people will drop because of actually having to do something outside school hours.

Any money making schemes are welcome. Everything has to be legal though, and starting capital seems not readily available. The school building ought to be, however.

Well, when I was at school one of the main fundraising methods was allowing peoiple to pay to chuck wet sponges at the teachers.  Another was paying not to wear uniform (obviously not applicable if you don;t have a school uniform).  Another is some form of charity sports, if you have the facilities.

Good luck, BTw.

No uniforms.

One teacher volunteered for rotten tomatoes and eggs, we intend to take him up on the offer. The guy is so popular it'll hardly make money from those who he has though, sadly enough. Charity sports, that might be something, but we lack any seating or stands on the sports ground.

Thanks, I really want this one to succeed, because this is one of the kinds of charity I like best.

Well.... how much after-hours access is their to the school facilities?  You could rent them out for a tournament or something - i.e. like 5-a-sides - and have each team pay an entry fee.  Not sure how much money that would raise, natch......

Um, another thing just occured to me.  you could have a battle of the bands type scenario (if you've got a decent sized hall / location for it) charge for entry and whatnot.  Maybe during a lunchhour or something.  If you really want to go nuts, you could video it and sell the tapes (though I'm not sure how effective that would be.... parents might appreciate, not sure)

After hour acces to school areas should be possible, especially if we chat up the right people. With 5-a-sides I gather you mean having a tournament, in a certain sport, where teams of 5 pay for the entry, and there is some kind of prize? That might just work, especially with the grounds we've got.

Battle of the bands, well, we haven't even got a big enough auditorium to put all the students in at once, so that might be an issue.  But we could, in theory, build some kind of out door thingy, weather permmiting. We would need to get the stage hirer to support us by sponsoring.....

Nononononono. You get a load of, erm, "volunteers" to have painful/funny/embarrassing things done to them. Like leg-waxing, shaving of eyebrows/moustaches, whatever. Just get people to sponsor 'em to do it, and charge people to watch it. You'll make loads. :D

OK, if I suggest that there is now way I'm keeping my hair.....

Really, it might work, but I doubt it. You'd need quite a few people to be humiliated, and a lot more to pay. We may be a school of rich kids, but not rich kids who want to spend for charity, I'm sorry to say.

Take a games console in to school and charge kids to play it during breaks. Even just an old SNES with Street Fighter II or something will do it. You'll make bajillions - we did for our charity thingy back in the day

Or get them to put CS or something on the school network, and charge for that.

CS on a 266/400Mhz, 64/128MB, integrated graph card computer?

And the console thing sounds cool indeed.

Yeah, well, I played with the thought of a massive LAN party, but that was rejected by the rest of the class.  Interest might be hard to draw.

And charging for something on the PC's would be bloody near impossible, unless it's open source, and we can connect card readers/coin machines to every box.

Well if you had it in just one room and charged people to get in, so much per hour or something.

Yeah, but when? And it'd be rather hard to get one of the 2 computer rooms, and there is no way we can get the study/computer room.
Not to mention the SysOps freaking out at the thought of anyone touching there lovely working systems with something like a game.

How about getting the dealers in on it, and for a week or so, 10% of all the money from drug transactions that go on in your school are donated towards charity?

You could just do a big all-day festival type thing, with some local bands playing and food and drinks and stuff. I'm sure there are at least a few local bands who would be willing to play just for the exposure or whatever. And maybe get a DJ or something, for all those people who prefer hip-hop or eloctronic music *shudder*

Ok, using the PC's is off, unless a one-time event, preferably something with LiveCD's ala Knoppix. The console thing might work, but we are a school with extremely spoiled kids, most got a pretty beasty machine at home, not to mention consoles. Though a simpel high score tournament might help. Still, anyone got any other good idea's?

Heh, if we did that at college you'd see gold trimmings on everything within 3 days.
Apparently someone did a survey last year, and 1 in 10 people is a dealer :wtf:

It ain't that bad, and people bring their own weed, it seems. Really, the drug (ab)use is not really noticeable.

Big festival on the schools fields might do, but getting interest would be interesting. Getting bands might not be the biggest issue ever, and the school as some awesome sound equipment.

You could do it on a Friday or something, so that during the day its a "family" type affair, and then in the afternoon/night you could put up the sound equipment and whatever else you can think of, so that students have an actual reason to show up.

my school did this sort of thing, but I was always too apathetic to show up, and since I live within walking distance I just went home and took the day off.

Sell food. Is the weather getting warm over there yet? Make jelly and sell it per cup - you can easily make 100, 150% profit that way. :)

I got it!
these kids are gona die right?
well why not get a few of them and harvest there organs and sell them on the black merket! you wouldn't beleive how much a liver or kidney can go for these days. :D

or you could just run around town harassing people at stop lights like most charities around here do, they tend to make quite a lot that way, also set up donation booths outside houses of worship, nothing gets people in a donateing mood like being told there gona go to hell if they don't.

You can't go wrong with a good carwash.
