Title: Worst... Death... Ever!

I want to ask a general question, "In a PC video game, what is the worst/absurd/funniest death of your first/third-person character?"

Basically this limits you to FPS, simulations, and some RPGs. RTS is out of the play here. Just specify the game(s), mission(s), and a brief explanation of death.

I'll start.

Thief: TDP - Mission "RTC (Return to Haunted Cathedral)"

When you get the Eye, you must at one point jump to the Hammer pedistal. When you do, the Eye becomes active and draws the undead around the hammer. Although most undead can't do anything to you, I was stupid enough to throwing flash bombs at the zombie/haunt/apparition horde waiting to eat my skin when one of the zombies exploded, sending its limbs across the altar, hitting me (I lost health points), causing me to fall down, and being whacked to death by four aggressive Hammer haunts below.

But then, nothing really beats the classic "hit by own missile" type death in FS2. ;7

The greatest humiliation deaths though are not the knife deaths but my own personal speciality.. running some poor shmuck over while in a plane... requiring you to fly low enough to hit a prone sniper without crashing.

That one really gets them to accuse you of cheating ;)

[SIZE=10]STUPID HUMAN[/SIZE]

I was 11 or 12 at the time and was scared ****less. :p

More recently I was attempting to save some hapless capital ship in FS2 by shooting down bombs and managed to run right into one.

Boom.

Zoom in and aim on the enemy base to fire a supressive rocket.. let one fly right as a warthog filled with my own men comes over a hill. Missle hits the bottom of the hog, they all die, hog flies inevitably into my face.

The Aquitaine is fixed, jumps out...and rams me. And I die, watching the Aquitaine jump to the safety of the Gamma Draconis system while my ship blows up.

:lol: Dude, Aces of the Pacific was an awesome game. That brings back some memories. :D

Hmmm, apart from the Halo and FS instances already mentioned, I do vaguely recall just about completing the last level of Commander Keen 6, only to fall down a hole of spikes with the final ending sign in sight. That was pretty bad. :p

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!.......................but it did turn out I didn't lose after all, at first I thought it was supposed to happen that way, but I replayed and made sure I had enough time to get out

then, the last cutscene came on and said: "According to observers Alpha 1 remainded behind so others could reach the Vega node... :rolleyes: :lol: "that's what you think"...

Dodge through 14+ tie fighters and interceptors, with only 10% health left....I swear - not one of 'em touched me and I manage to kill a couple...and then..WHAM!!! hit by a #*($&@)($&)#@$ X-wing that was chasing them......

Oh, that and accidently blowing myself up by accidentally blowing up the cyclops I just launched because I was shooting at a fighter that went accross my front O_O

Post by: WMCoolmon on June 05, 2004, 01:45:45 am: I still think mine is not getting the "Dive" part but following the "Hit your burners" command in that last SOC mission. I almost made it through the Sathanas :p

In TacticalOps, there have been many times when I've gone to reload my M4 w/ M203 after dispatching of a hostile. However, in order to do this you have to switch fire modes (primary fire fires bullets in the first mode, nades in the second).
So I'll encounter a terrorist, expend my MP5 ammo, whip out my m4 to spray some bullets down a hall and promptly die as I nade the wall right in front of me. :D

Post by: karajorma on June 05, 2004, 05:26:40 am: Playing JetStrike on the Amiga was always humiliating for me. Worse the game seems to know it and goes out of the way to take the piss.

For instance when you crash you get a big picture of a crater and a sign saying "You are here!" :D

Still the best death must be when I was flying a harrier through a road tunnel and started to lose control. In Jetstrike loss of control means only one thing. Time to eject. Of course I forgot about the tunnel and automatically hit the eject key. SPLAT!

Post by: an0n on June 05, 2004, 05:29:09 am: I was playing MS Combat Flight Simulator and I was flying a Spitfire or some such against a wing of bombers and some fighters.

I'd chased them around a bit and made them veer around some. Then I started taking tiny shots at the bombers' engines, destroying their speed and screwing their turning. Then I started taking down the fighter escort. I took out one of the fighter's wings sending it spiraling into a bomber where it took out two battered engines and sent the poor bastard dropping. Then the fighter kinda bounced and went slamming into a second battered bomber, exploding it out-right and crippling another nearby fighter, which went spinning all over the place, ****ting itself. I took a few shots, took out one of its wings and it went careening into another of the bombers and destroyed a whole wing. Then, as the bomber plummeted, its tail guns caught sight of me and opened fire, raping my fighter to death.

I fought to gain control but the thing was wrecked, couldn't turn and was dropping like a stone......right into the last bomber.

So, as the final pirouette of this ballet of carnage, my fighter tore straight through enemy bomber, which went up in a collosal explosion, and I went speeding to my appointment with the ground laughing my ass off and screaming 'BANZAAAIII!!!".

Yeah something like that has happened to me too.
Except that I had already destroyed the Demon, there was only one shivan fighter left, I had already pressed alt+j and was about to warp out.
Can you guess what happened?
The one fighter comes and destroys me as I'm about to warp out :blah: (low hull integrity due to being hit by some flak and various other stuff which is rather hazardeous to any ship.)

Post by: IceFire on June 05, 2004, 05:34:44 pm: Flying a Bf 109 in Forgotten Battles once...made a boom and zoom pass (from above and diving through enemies formation and then zooming back to altitude again) and I managed to collide with not one but two bombers...each who took off one wing of my fighter and I got turned into a missile like object that impacted the ground shortly thereafter.

Also...in FreeSpace 2...the Sathanas once hit me with all 4 main beam cannons. There wasn't anything left.

Post by: WMCoolmon on June 05, 2004, 11:01:55 pm: I just remembered one of my more fun exploits in TO. It's not exactly a bad death, but, well, it's too fun(ny) to go unsung.

First some exposition - In TacticalOps, there is this one map called "Verdon" that is basically a big dam. CTs start at the bottom of the dam, SFs start at the top; oftentimes games will turn into a snipefest.
However, if the terrorists manage to get past the snipers (usually easy) there's a maze of tunnels and paths they can go through to get to the surface. One of these happens to be an elevator with an entrance in the ceiling. :drevil:

So, one round I get this brilliant idea. I head over to the elevator shaft, sneak into it, and lie in wait on top of the elevator. After a small gunfight with one of my teammates, I hear someone walk into the elevator. Then I heard the doors close.

So I dropped the grenade I was holding into the elevator. :D

The special forces inside caught on pretty quick and started firing at me. I fire back, trying to find a way to stay alive. Of course, this didn't really matter because the grenade blew us all to hell. :lol:

Turns out I got 3 SFs with that $500 grenade. :D

Another incident I can remember is in Halo Multiplayer (the demo)
After securing the Banshee whilst being assaulted by several people (including 1 that kept complaining of us cheating since we actually managed to take down his Banshee), I proceeded to attack the enemy........on foot......

Getting out of the banshee while it was still moving, I proceeded to charge and throw grenades at some poor slob in front of me........only to be run over by the Banshee as it came to a full stop.

To add insult to injury, I then blew up my own body with one of the Grenades I threw, along with the Banshee to high-heaven..........ugh, was that embarresing.......

One of my friends when playing cnc renegade (we were on LAN, and used one of those nifty scripts to spawn bajillions of nod rocket soldiers) jumped out of his transport chopper right into the middle of them. It was rather amusing.

Also (I dunno what game this was from...) I fired a heat seeking missile. Accellerated to chase an enemy. Was then blown up by my own missile.

Hapend once...but I have a even more himiliating death!

The mission where you have to protect the Iceni and the Hinton. I managed to get them to the node - but what happens:
the Hinton tries to jump, but rams the Iceni and sends it spiraling towards me. I got damaged pretty bad and flew like a pinball ball around hiting the Hinton and bouncing again.
Now the Iceni tries to jump and rams the Hinton, destroying it, but continues onward ramming a asteroid and as it was starting to blow up it was still going forward and rammed me AGAIN.
Nedless to say, none survived..;)

Hmm... Something similar happened to me while playing Renegade multiplayer.

I was playing as a NOD Black Hand heavy weapons soldier. Some doofus had a transport helicopter and was loading troops. I went in - and sealed my fate gratefully. He took off - didn't know how to fly. He attempted to hover to the GDI base and was either shot down by the guard tower or he ejected for some reason unknown and killed the rest of us. It was quite funny seeing my corpse disappear on the green turf while someone over the chat channel said "you f****ng n00b!"

I went into my death throes, and hit the Lucifer...

...on the reactor subsystem.

Cue endgame cinematics.

Not humiliating, but pretty cool. Now I can say that I gave my life so that other might live in BOTH Freespace games.
