Title: thank you very, very much Mr.Global Warming
Post by: Rictor on June 09, 2004, 04:37:18 pm
its 38 C over here with the humidex, 28 without. I can barely move around the house. I don't mind dry heat, but I live a few kilometers from Lake Ontario, so its always humid. All the windows are open, its not helping. Instead of just sweating it out and be done with it, its always just hot enough to get you mildly sweaty, and showers ain't helping. Wake up sweaty, go to bed sweaty, and night is just marginally colder than the day, but not enough,

So, I've set myself up on the balcony, where its tolerable at least (nice and windy) with a drink and a book, though I'm wondering if I can keep it up for 2 months.

And keep in mind, the is in CANADA, the FROZEN NORTH!

anyone else feelin' the burn?

so, tell me again, why going to the beach to meet/drool at bikinied chicks is not an option?

It's getting unbearable here in Blighty, but that's probably because I'm always overdressed...

there is no beach. the waters of Lake Ontario are a) polluted and b) cold. No one even thinks of going in, hence no beach. The closest thing there is is Wasaga Beach, which is an hours drive away, and even that is cold, filthy and crawling with people (cause its the only beach around). I went there a few times, and reffering to it as a beach requires a relaxed attitude towards the English language.

but the good news is, the towel I'm using to cool myself with has somehow taken on a nice, musky smell, which is actually quite pleasant. Its smells like perfume. Mmmmm.

Overdressed? You keep telling me you wear nothing but a bowler hat and neck tie

I think the tie needs to go to. Go naked, heat like this is the reason we don't have fur anymore.

looks like my family has taken up buying bottled water again, because you can keep it cool in the fridge, which I keep insisting is not only stupid, its damn costly too.

So, I'm currently drinking, and I kid you not, "Fred's Performance Oxygenated Spring Water". Bottled with 100% pure oxygen.

Wow, 100% pure oxygen. Truly, it is the drink of the gods.

Here is the nutritional information printed on the side of the bottle:

Per 250 mL
Calories--0
Fat--0
Carbohydrates--0
Protein--0

I didn't think anything could be worse than having nutritional information on a bottle of water, but these have just proven me wrong.

In addition, I am having to towel down my cats every few hours with a wet towel, cause I don't think they're much liking the heat. Imagine having a thick coat of fur in this heat....

Yes, I'm complaining too much. But then again, its too hot, so I think I'm entitled to a larger than usual amount of *****ing. Yarghhhh!

You don't have a leather chair, do you?
That'd be hell in such heat.

How long 'till the ****er's supposed to get colder? I personally would rather be wrapped up against the cold then sweltering in the heat

I have a leather chair. I stick to it

It occurs to me that it would make sense to hibernate during the summer.
I may try it next year.

Its leather (and not the good, classy kind. Its an old chair, which is the kind you might find in a distinguised library 100 years ago. Except that it doesn't lean back, its a straight back chair) but I don't stick cause I wearing clothes. I'm the only person in the household who has not taken up stripping to bare essentilals. Tshirt and shorts, which I don't think is all that overdressed.

Humanity is STUPID!

We're gonna kill(fry) ourselves, but not before we kill all other living things on this planet and polute the last drop/lump/kubic meter  of water/earth/air....

Good thing I live by the sea, but I don't think there will be anything left (the tourists are swarming in HUGE numbers, sea is getting dirtier everay year...)
I see no hope...

Dude, FFS, the planet's temperature goes up and down like a yo-yo. It's no big deal. The dino's survived all sorts of major climate changes. Global warming is not something we need to beat ourselves up over

Tell it to the dinos...

In the last 20 years there has been a major increase in hurricanes, tornados, floods and droughts all over the world, and that my friend is just the beginning...

And you're telling me NOT to be worried!?:wtf:

I'll right, for the sake of ease, I'll just stick to one language from now on..

Well, you could always be an emmigrant, like me :D :D

Lucky bastard. I once visited my aunt in Split, and she had access to a beach house right on the coast. The proper beach was literally 2 minutes away, or about 10 big steps away from the front door to get in to the water, if you didn't mind jumping.

I envy you, I'de give anything you be over there right now. The Adriatic  rocks.

You think Split has a nice beach!? Dude, split has one of the better beaces on the Croatian Coast, but they are probably the worst in the local region (Splitsko-Dalamtinska zupanija).
I live 52 km from Split and most places inbetween have better beaches.

Yeah...great beaches, sea and all.... but the weather is acting stranger every year. Hey, if I can see changes in the last 10 years, then it IS serious.
We better gat that Global Warming under control.....

Trash, look. You're not going to live forever. Homo Sapiens are not going to exist for ever. Species come and go. My point about the dinos is that they were around for hundreds of millions of years, and if we manage that we'll have had a great run. You're taking it for granted that today's climate is 'normal' for the Earth. Well it's not. The climate bounces up and down, and nothing we do is going to stop that.

True...but we're changing it at an alarming rate!
And it's not healthy...

ElNino anyone?

Trashman: no no, the place was about 45 minutes outside of Split. I *think* it was called Bratus.

dg: well, yeah, but human activity can/is unlfuencing it. If we take it nice and easy, we may yet have time to develop the technology to live through an ice age. No species on Earth has ever before (as far as we know) come even close to out level of technology. I don't think its implausible to think that some sort of weather techonolgy will show up in the next 50 or 100 years.

except ofcourse HAARP, which the US government is developing/testing as a weapon, and its quite capable of wreaking havok with the climate. Scary stuff, if it is in the hands of lunatics who will use it for destructive purposes, which it is.

It's actually relatively cool down here in Georgia compared with other years... nothing has really broken any records yet AFAIK

Just get A/C.

Maybe DG. But making the sort of changes in 50 years that usually take 10,000 is not a good idea.

Look, you study planetery science for a few years, you get to appreciate quite how insignificant we are and how ridiculous it is to worry about **** like climate change. Getting wiped out by our own atmospheric effluent would serve us right and be a evolutionary piece of peotic justice. I'm all for cutting polluting chemicals, but in reality the hard link between industry and global warming has yet to be proven.

I don't know about that. All the science I've seen on the matter seems to show it's pretty much case closed.

I'm not saying that everywhere is getting hotter.
I'm saying that the climate is going beserk - and that means both ways..
Rains where it normaly shouldn't in that part of the year, hot when it was supposed to be cold, etc...

The climate is a very sensitive thing and the air masses are influenced by what we do.
As far as I know, human influence has allready caused slight changes in the normal air masss movement patterns - and we have nature showing it's wrath all over the world - from USA, Canada, Brasil, over Europe and Africa, to China and Japan.

I read somewhere that the number of such known disasters (floods, droughts, storms, landslides, etc...) has increased by allmost 40% in the last 20 years and it's increasing exsponentialy!

Now, I don't know if i can trust that number, but I've been watching news and readin newspapers, and I do see such news more often than before, and I see some minor climate changes where I live..

Completely wierd weather is accuring more often, and franky, I am very concerned, especially if one knows that any damage done to the enviroment is visible only after some time.
For instance, the freons you release in the atmosphere today will start to eat awway at the ozon in 7 years.
Which means if the ozon layer became criticly thin and we banned all pollutants, it would still degrade for several years at least!!!:nervous:
