From ModDB:
We've received word from Valve that arrests were made in several countries in relation to the theft of the Half-Life 2 source code, which occurred late last year.
"Within a few days of the announcement of the break-in, the online gaming community had tracked down those involved," said Gabe Newell, Valve's CEO. "It was extraordinary to watch how quickly and how cleverly gamers were able to unravel what are traditionally unsolvable problems for law enforcement related to this kind of cyber-crime."
Thousands of tips were received related to the criminal activities, with a core group of people who were able to analyze and backtrack from these clues. Subsequent to these individuals being identified, Valve has been working with various national authorities to prepare cases against those involved, leading to these arrests.
"It was very uplifting to see how the community rallied and tracked these people down. Everyone here at Valve is once again reminded of how much we owe to the gaming community," added Mr. Newell.

Job well done ;)
I'm kinda glad the community tracked them down, and showed resourcefullness that the International Police couldn't, this is why the RIAA can never win ;) hehehehe

Hah, owned. Strike one for the good guys. If I was Valve I'd give the guys that did it a job in security though, since they apparently know their stuff.

Wow, sweet. Say, how come our community never gets into the news? We do some pretty cool stuff occasionally. :p
-
I've just been waiting for those guys to be tracked down. That it was done by the online community only makes it that much sweeter.

Really kinda odd don't you think, learn programming and hacking crack some big companies security and you got your self a well payt job, in most cases you are hired directly, so crime DOES pays:p

In most cases, you're locked up / fined / placed on some form of supervision or probation and have your computer taken by the polis.

...though if you used your brake-in to warn the administrator, or point out a system valnurability I would have the judge sent on a medical check-up who gives you a severe sentence.
-
Now, if they'd just get their f***ing game out, we'd all be happy.

That's worldwide teamwork without law or privacy respect boundary for you. You just can't beat that ;) ( you can't hire it either, tho :p ).

I assumed that Kal meant the guys who caught the hackers rather than the hackers themselves.
