I had my sister convinced Brazil were going to win Euro2000. Man, that was a funny few weeks.

And I think Ireland are going to do better than England.

And Germany are gonna win.

I can't understand the rabidness of soccer fans.  Sure each sport has it's own rabid fanbase, but soccer seems to me(an American non-fan) to have a much larger percentage of rabid "I'll severely beat you if you're for another team" fans.  I can't really think of another sport that  has a higher bodycount due to insane celebration.  I mean, really, there have been numerous cases, in recent times(the last couple of years), where lots of people died from trampling by over-enthusiastic fans.

American Football fans would be the same, but you guys just don't have any follow-through.

Lib, if you watch or read news reports from over hear you'd know better - a lot of violence is instigated by small groups of dedicated hard-core thugs who use football as an excuse to start a fight. Police identify the ring leaders and confiscate their passports to try and minimize the risk of trouble abroad (you may have heard that England is constantly threatened with expulsion from competitions because of the violence)

The thing to remember is that football does not automatically equal violence, but yobs supporting one team will be more than happy to attack people in the shirt of another team.

Pfff. Just buy an England shirt.

That way, the only people you have to worry about are the Turkish fans.

Murderous bastards.

Y'see, that's the good thing about the Scots (and presumably the Welsh and northern Irish) - we know we're pish, so we don't mind getting beat as long as we can consume a few hundred units of alcohol, kiss a polcal police officer (preferably female) and piss in a fountain* in the town square.

No, really, its all in good fun. You can go ahead and make fun of my country for loosing out to Azerbaijan, thats way more humiliating than loosing to a world class team like France. The way I figure it, when it comes to sports and/or military rivaries , all bets are off.

Some people are that pathetic, most people regard that as the msot childish behaviour ever.

I still don't want to be a German asking directions to the beach in Den Haag (The Hague)  though. But that might be due to general anti tourism feelings.

Americans are weird. It's all due to them losing their heads after winning their independance. They decided to do everything differently from the Brits just to prove they could.

The weird part is that somehow they think that this makes them correct even in cases like this where every single other country in the world knows that they are wrong :D

hey, great idea guys, lets drop the u from all our words, that'll show the world we're different.

I actually speak a wierd combination of American/Proper english, due to the fact that I first learned english in an American school, but afterwards moved to Canada. So, I say "zee" instead of "zed", but still use the British "u" in words like colour. Which makes writing html code that much harder

To be fair, there is some historical basis - Celtic were founded by Catholic monks* and their support was initially from Irish immigrants (who were the main / only Catholic group at the time.  Rangers were named after a touring english rugby team, are a largely Protestant team and thus somewhat monarchistic.....not to mention that the colours match the strip.

But really, it's a load of pish.  I'm a Rangers fan and I'd much rather see the St.Andrews cross or Lion Rampant at Ibrox any day.  Although, there are a lot of other flags kicking around both stadiums - sometimes for good reasons (i.e. US flag when Reyna palyed for the Gers), sometimes for no apparent reason (Celtic fans have adopted the Palestinian flag, Rangers the Israeli - showing how the Old firm can embrace any rivalry).

My tip for the final - Spain vs France.  Spain are the best team I've seen so far, and France won't have many worst goalscoring / chance making performances than they did against England (they dominated play but created nearly sod-all - albiet Englands 8-0-2 system may have had an affect on that).  Plus France have shown the character for it.... as for the other big-guns; Portugal probably won't qualify (I can't see them beating Spain), Italy looked bereft of width against Denmark, the Dutch were shambolic at times against Germany and Germany simply aren't good enough.

*partly to stop them mixing with Protestants, depending on which stories you believe.

I am truly appauled by Kasperl and Darkage.:blah: You don't have to like football but to say you hope your own country loses makes me wanna hurl... at you. Seriously, it's better to shut your pieholes then to say anything at all about football apparently.

Really, you guys rather have your normal boring ass lives instead of parties, booze and fun? If you don't like football there are still parties to go to. Go to the closest pub and voila, party. You don't even have to watch the game, just have some damned fun.

But I guess you guys would rather be sitting in your room watching the Bold and the Beautifull or something. Damned pessimists.

I really can't stand it when people are so pessimistic and negative about something.

*tentacle rapes Darkage and Kasperl for rooting for the damned Germans and then neuters them with teh Axe*

The irony, I'm a girl and the only real football fan around here. :D

-----

Now, onto the subject at hand.

Holland played extremely bad the first 50-60 minutes and deserved the weird ass goal from the Germans. But after Pierre v. Hooijdonk came onto the pitch I felt like I was watching the actual team we have... partially. After the goal from v. Nistelrooy things were all good. If the Germans wouldn't have underestimated us the last 30 minutes of the game they probably would've deserved to win. But they did, so the 1-1 final score was fair.

Ow, and... GO GREECE! :D I so hope they go through to the next round!

I follow international football quite closely but I'm not interested in club level.

Jiggyhound: England do have a strong team I agree, the defence against France (2 mistakes omitted) was incredibly strong, but England aren't a defensive team, they have a strong midfield and good strikers but they weren't even getting a touch of the ball in the second half of the England-France game.

T: I don't give a rat's ass about partying, especially not in an exam week. What I do care about is idiots with orange clothing and wierdass shout hats yelling "Hup Holland Hup" in the bloody school yard when I am trying to focus on an upcoming test. Or even having to lag behind some idiots on bike with orange flags waving about so wide there is no  way to pass without getting slammed in the chest with a Go Holland! flag.

That, and having a morning paper (Eindhoven's Dagblad) with a front page with only football news, but with important stuff hid away in some odd nook just because we made 1-1 annoys the hell out of me.

As for supporting my country, come on, what's there to support? If you mean the country in general, I am hardly proud of it.  If you mean the team, come on, football is just another sport to me, and not even an interesting one.

And yeah, feeling team spirit is nice, but you can over-exegurate real easily.

I stopped watching TV when Angel and Buffy stopped, and I am spending my time either studying or online trying to get a little rest. The hype is just annoying me, and it should be over with as soon as possible.

As I thought, an unpatriotic, pessimistic nerd. If you got to ***** about something do it in the confession booth but don't ruin other people's fun by being all negative and pessimistic.

Really, if you don't like it, don't want to party, don't want to have fun and basically don't want to live your life, that's up to you.

Also, you're in high-school right? Exam weeks were over a week ago, so don't gimme that excuse. (Or is it 'repetitie week' from the lower classes? In that case, sorry for this comment :p)

All, I see is *complain complain complain* in your posts. Keep it to your damned self.

Sorry for the personal attack but I despise negative people who make it their business to infect other people. :ick:

Oh, gosh, I see you know my schools schedule better then all the teachers, the students, and the principal does. I'd better tell them we can't have any exams. But hey, here's an idea, I am not in 5 HAVO or 5/6 VWO, so it might just be that I am not having central exams. But how can that be? I might just have to ask my teachers. Oh, yeah, school exams, schoolexamen, schoolonderzoek. But of course, you know it better then everybody else, so I will have to tell them I cannot do my exams because you say so.

FYI, I am in 4 VWO, and working my ass of to pass the year after 12 weeks of illness.

And if you care, you started off the attacks, I only said I was hoping that Holland quit, because of the bloody hype. If you can't handle that, no need to pretend your me without caffeine or sleep. And certainly no need to go of on a rampant about patriotism.

As for 'living my life', well, I kinda put that on hold indefinately when I stopped being able to walk up a stair without running out of breath. Also, I might just need my time to pass. If you care, I could put up a nice little excel sheet with my grades. No fun.

Fun.

Really fun.

I admit to having watched 15 min of the game, mainly to find out if Holland got beaten yet.  All I hate about football is the complete idiots surrouding it. I am not even talking about the hooligans if football wasn't there, they would go beat eachother up over hockey, basketball, or the lady's championship in ping-pong. I am talking about the endless yappping in the news, in the papers, on the radio. When I turn on my TV, I don't want to know the weather forecast for Portugal, I want to know if I have to take a jacket when going outside. When I read the paper, I don't want 3 pages of crap about a 90 minute sport event, I want to read about the manditory ID scheme getting through the 1st chamber (kinda like the Lords).

I guess I'm weird because, when it comes to (most) sport, even at an international level, I can take it or leave it.

In a world without football, you'd just say: "A world without rugby is a world not worth living in. "
Or you'd name some other sport.

Right.

The masses just need some sport to rally about. The Romans did it with chariot racing, the yanks do it with baseball, the Canadians with hockey, and the Europeans seem to enjoy football.

The moment a sport goes from a fun game to somethign worth millions, the fun is gone for me.

[color=66ff00]The Isreal/palestine flags are a result of idiots over here; the IRA started flying Palestine flags as a show of 'brotherhood' with the palestinians. As a result some slightly more idiotic loyalist decided that 'if they fly the palestine flags we'll fly their enemy's flag'.

If you see either flag in the hands of some football supporter you can pretty much guarantee they're either an idiot, a psychopath or possibly both.

Pity it's not like the rest of nature where the smart outlast the stupid, destructive types.

There is a pretty big difference between a repetitie week and an exam week giving you two periods worth of exams at once, worth about 60% of your grade, all but one the last I'll ever see of the subject.

But if your highness thinks she knows better, well, tehn off course, no need to study, because exams cannot be given outside of periods not defined by the greatest mind in the universe, being you.  :doubt:

As for having no fun at all, I see football is clearly the only thing there is to have fun with. It is off course impossible to enjoy a good conversation, or have a good time without a reason to get so pissed you can't remember what you said 2 minutes ago.

Or maybe, just maybe, there are other ways to have fun that do not involve either alcohol, loud music, or some bloated sport involving too much money and not enough brains. But off course, I could be wrong.

Scool exams aren't 'official' national exams. School exams = repetitie week. The only difference is, is that you carry your grade onto the next class.

60% of your grade? :wtf: A single school exam week can't have that high a percentage. It's not even permitted. Even the national exams are 'only' 50% of your overall grade.

And seeing I was required to know all the friggin' eductional rules for VWO, HAVO and VMBO niveaus to even be able to apply for a job as teacher and am reminded of those rules every single day I go to work, yes I do know better.

And obviously you never had real fun if you think it's just about the alcohol, loud music (well, this one can be correct :D), sport, money etc. It's about the atmosphere. But I do agree that everyone else enjoys something else and this might not be your thing. But you don't have to be all ****ing negative and pessimistic about it. Just shut your piehole and let other who do enjoy it, enjoy it. If you want to have a good conversation then first of all, don't even enter a ****ing thread about football if you don't like it. Nobody forces you to. :ick:

I think their (uefa) hands are tied if the referee has already penalised the player during the match (i.e. even if its just giving a yellow card or even only a foul against) - because otherwise they'd be admitting the referee made a mistake and be undermining his authority, or some pish.  IIRC they can only penalise a player for something the referee has either missed (but which was caught on camera / complained about by the other team, as in this case), or which the ref highlights in his match report.

No, because it is stated in the UEFA rules that if a referee misjudges such a ruthless and blatant offense (if it happened in his FOV, which it did, that he is disqualified from refereeing any further in the tournament.

Probably the sheer volume of English in Portugal having something to do with that. It's sad that it happens, it's even worse when these apparent fans aren't just stupid kids but 47 year old firefighters who really should know better.

What is interesting though is how they keep referring to them as football fans when they are in the Algarve (sp?) which is nowhere near the tournament. I think they're just assholes on holiday that think that the football is a good excuse to cause trouble, they'd probably do it regardless of the tournament anyway.

Plus, as bad as English hooliganism can be, I don't think it approaches anywhere near the psychotic fervor of the Galataseray(sp? again) fans, those guys should be shot.

Now, when is the next Englan/Turkey match? Play it in some stadium in the middle of nowhere, put inexpensive camera's in and around the stadium, remove the police from everywhere except the field to protect the players, and call it a reality show. Instant ratings, though I doubt anyone would be watching for the game.

That's 'Close your mouth, I want to sleep.'

That's quite polite actually, if you want to be rude say 'Hou je bek, ik wil godverdomme slapen!'.

That's 'Shut up, I want to sleep goddamnit!".

Though, non-Dutch people probably won't know how to pronounce it correctly :p

I think I would have little problems learning dutch as it's a mix of the three languages I currently know, english, german and swedish. kind of.

and as for on-topic, now sweden can't lose to denmark next game or we're out (italy winning over bulgaria is not only probable, it's almost certain). sweden must get the defenses together. it's almost embarassing as it is now.

Dutch is easy to get the basics of, but once you try to spell it correctly.....

There are more exceptions then rules, and the rules are often so vague that you always do something wrong.

And the Latin in it is easy to overlook. There is a lot more Latin left in French and English then in Dutch. Not to mention that people are starting call every word with more then 2 syllables 'difficult', and that general vocubulary is on the way down. Go primary schooling!

Anyway, soccer, Holland-Tsjechië (how the heck do you spell it in English?). Is there any chance of the Tjechs winning?

History between the two;

Draw: 4
Holland win: 4
Chechs win: 8 (!!!)

History shows that Holland has had great difficulties dealing with them. Though 4 or so of the Chech victories were frielndlies so they don't really count.

However, given the difficulties the Chechs had against Latvia (they barely won) I give us Dutchies excellent odds this time.

Ow, and... GO GREECE!  I so hope they go through to the next round!

(posted by Tiara)

Well, thanks! We still got the russians to beat to go through, but let's face it...

If anyone had the guts to tell me last week that we would actually beat the Portuguese and draw the Spaniards, I would think he was insane... :D. Now I AM MADD!!!! :D :D

Well, I live in Alexandras str. 100 meters from the Panatinaikos' historic stadium the "Leoforos". I also happen to be a huge fan of said team.

We Greeks owe our success to 3 things. no 1 is Coach Rechangel or as we call him "Archangel". He got us to understand that we could look the big guys in the face and not give up. Play what we can, and let it rain! The archangel IS THE MAN!!!

2, Panathinaikos (my team) and its continued European success led the way for what you see now. PAO showed that it could be done, because PAO did it.

3, Beginners', dum, Fools' (whatever) luck.

You saw the game we had with Spain. They could easily score 3. Instead we drew them. That doesn't mean they aren't good enough. It is just that they took us for granted. I remember the shot, right after they scored, where King  Huan Carlos pointed that his team would score 2 more goals.

I remember yelling to the top of my lungs that they would get 2 more but not goals exactly... :) I was right.

Well tommorow, along with some friends we will go to the Athens' Med school nearby (2 Km away, In GOYDI!) and watch the game on the Big screen, (rumours that female students of medicine will be available in blue white bikini tops, are bound to arise, but will have to be examined further).  :D :D :D

God, I hope we pass through. I am sure the team will fight to the death for it.

What I love seeing is the match from hell, Portugal Vs Spain. It would have been a cosy little friendly, with a lot of passing and possibly no scoring, but we went ahead and crashed their party. Now both will fight for their lives and I expect a bodycount.

Well, Holland lost the game after leading with 2-0. The referee was bribed or something (and I'm seriously not joking. he gave cards for people breathing against their opponent).

This means Holland no longer controls their chances of going through to the quarter finals.

you know, the swedish commentators were really all talking about the clear off-side that eventually led to the 2-0 goal. On the TV I was watching, I thought the ref was biased in hollands favor.

New UEFA rules, the off-side rule only applies to the one receiving the pass. Other players can stray off-side without being called back.

Stupid rule but it was a valid goal.

Well, from Britain, the ref certainly seemed biased against Holland. Not that both teams didn't play well, but Holland deserved a draw from that match, that Red card amazes me even now! It's got to rank up there with the Maradona incident against England, the guy was halfway to the ground before he even touched Schwalbe :(

Hmm, I don't have a TV, so I was listening to it on a BBC webcast; I can't say whether that red card was justified. But the Chezks put up a hell of a fight.

I've got a grudge against Holland, so I was happy to see the Chezks win. During World Cup 98 and the past 2 Euro cups, it was always those damned Dutch bastards who knocked Yugoslavia out of the running. Seriously, its like a curse, every time, its always Holland. I still remember World Cup 98, one of the Dutch players (I forget who, might have been Davids) ran over one of our players. I mean, literally, ran right over his chest. No foul, no card, nothing. I thought the ref must have either been blind or bribed. Thats karma for ya :p :p

But in any case, its seems likely that Holland will be advacing to the quarter finals. They're facing Latvia, and Germany has to take on the Chezk Republic, who obviously aren't kidding around. It'll be Holland and the Chezks probably.

But Germany is going up against the Chechs who play for litterally nothing. They are already in the next round. Against Holland they had to win.

And Latvia almost won from Holland and played to a draw against Germany. I'm not underestimating them either.

I too wish that Holland advances. Even if Ajax has trounced my fave teams' only chance of a European cup (champions league didn't exist back in 1971,)... still...

I think V.nistelrooi's goal has to be one of the prettiest I have seen, and probably the zaniest, wackiest. (on the germans)

I had a poll among friends' about his goal or the Ibrahimovic one. V.N. won because he knew what he was doing.

OK, I watched the game, and regardless of the outcome, it was a great game. The ref did indeed make a lot of mistakes, but Robben ought to have gotten red for the sliding from behind, but the Dutch should have gotten the penalty for the grappling.
It was great fun to watch, and the first goal was very nice. The distance shot from the Chec, err, Mezden or something? That shot was great, too bad it hit the bar. There were some pretty nice attempts from Oranje too.

That was Nedved. He played a very good game for the Chechs, no doubt about that.

But thanks to that moron Advocaat, we lost the game. For as long as Robben was playing we were winning. He took him out for no good reason and put in the worst player of the entire team, Bosvelt (a defending midfielder) where he should've at least put in an attacking midfielder but prefferable v.d Vaart or v, Hooijdonk to keep the offensive spirit instead of falling back.

He is by far the worst trainer EVER. No trainer would make such a big mistake but him.

WHEN YOUR TEAM IS UP FRONT WITH ONE GOAL AND DOING A GOOD JOB YOU DON'T TAKE OUT A STRIKER! LET ALONE THE DAMNED BEST STRIKER ON THE ENTIRE ****IN' PITCH.

yeah. that shot was amazing. "a shot from another county", as they said after the game here.

and even if the chzechs are set, I think they'll put up a fight to germany, just as denmark and sweden won't go for a draw, even if that would mean they're both in the next round.

and GT-Keravnos, Ibrahimovic knew what he was doing. Zlatan does that stuff quite often at practice. sure, he was a little lucky, as it went over that player, but other than that...

See, thats whats I'm thinking. The Chezks (does anyone know the actual, proper spelling?) would rather have Germany advancing than Holland, or thats the way it seems to me. Easier opposition and so forth. Germany doesn't seem to be on top of their game, and its not like Holland got trounced by a comfortable margin. So....

Ah, we'll see. I don't think Holland can advance to the semis, whatever may come. Its only halfway throught the first round, and still there is no clear favourite except France. Portugal v Spain should be interesting, they're both great teams...

I'm not knocking Greece at all. They kicked Portugals arse and drew with Spain. Sure Russian beat them but by then they pretty much knew they were going through anyway so I doubt they particularly cared.

By the time you get to the quarter finals there are bad teams really. Any team that makes it can definately surprise you. I'm not assuming that Croatia are a forgon conclusion either. If France draw they could actually win the group by beating England. They aren't the push over many have been claiming either. They nearly spanked the French (Who got lucky AGAIN and managed to wrench a draw from a game they should have lost).

The reason I'd rather play Greece is simply cause many of my family live in Portugal :)

Yeah, I held out hope for a bit, seeing as how there have been some pretty major upsets in the past, but it was more or less over once England took the lead.

They did, that's what made it such a good game, two teams attacking. I hate it when a team gets a goal and sits on it for the rest of the game.

Right as you may be, I have still memories of my team's first european game this year. Panathinaikos went to play in Manchester Utd's stadium, and got thrashed losing 4-0 in the half time.

I am more than happy that by playing defensively in mid-field, keeping 2-3 defensive zones and counterattacking, Greece has been spared yet.

(Then again, we have the French to fight, against who, all defensive plans will prove somehow inadequate... :doubt:   )

I, and all the Greeks are too happy to have made it thus far.
We :ha: all of you, of this I am sure. ;7

It surely :wtf:  us!

1-0 Bulgaria

1-0 Danmark =

Sweden vs. England in finals.

Please let it stay like this.

edit: to clarify

As second, Sweden goes to play against retards of this year. Czech's that don't have the game once it's taken from them or Germany with players they picked up from the local kindergarden are the best two that will be going against Sweden should they come in second. Then it's either France or Greece in semi's. After that it's finals.

In the upper group, there are tough tough nuts, where I hope England to emerge as victors.

Ownzage in the finals! (England vs. Sweden in the finals is kind of a dream for me, because I want one of those teams to win the Euro more than anyone else).

the keyword being "almost". I don't think we'll have it easy against germany nor holland. sweden needs to work on the defense, we give the opposing teams way to many shots at our goal. also, it doesn't work to have our team members slip on the grass all the effing time. I hope it'll be against germany, anyway.

so, what about latvia? no chance they'll make it.

btw, was that german ref we had drunk or something?

Germany wins - Holland out of the tournament no matter what.
Holland loses - Holland out of the tournament no matter what.

Holland wins, Germany plays to a draw - Holland through
Holland wins, Germany loses - Holland through
Holland plays to a draw, Germany loses - Holland goes through (most likely. Unless some freaky outcome is realized)

We do still have a good chance but it's no longer in our own hands. :blah:

I'm German, and I guess I should be somewhat enthusiastic - regarding the history against the Czechs (4 wins out of 4 games) and regarding our team is one point ahead of Holland.

But I'm not. Hardly anybody here believes we'll make it. Having seen the game against Latvia, with this awful offence...that's no good. Most of the forward players won't score even if the Czechs play without a goalkeeper...

But that won't prevent me from being most hopeful tonight. Though it means Holland is out, which, without offence, must be regarded as their own fault.

:( Well, nobody is really surprised.

Rather - well, shocked.

Congratulations to Holland, though the first two goals were rather doubtful in terms of the rules. A penalty that was none, and the second goal smelled a lot like offside. Furthermore, I'd not say the "glory days" are over. There's a lot of potential in the young players, really a lot. Especially that young offensive player, Podolski, since he's from "my" club. :D

Ah, and it's "Alles ist vorbei". Just for the wrong team.

This is a really, really dissappointing, (albeit interesting) tournament. Every team I've stood for has lost. England - out thanks to Spice Boy, France - out, Sweden - out, and soon, denmark will bite it from the Chechzs.

Heh, yeah, Portugal will be a tough one. But I have fate in our team's ability to cope with them. Their style of play combined with the sheer amount of arrogance from certain players (*cough*Figo*cough*), would make it a tad bit easier for Holland. They aren't the tough ass or hard working teams like the Chzechs or even Sweden. And that's the kind of team we Dutchies hate to play against.

Yesterday there were celebrations in Athens the likes of which I couldn't believe! 10.000 raving bluwhite maniacs in Omonoia sq. (Athen's most central square). IT WAS WILD.

And now comes the butchers' bill! :D :D :D

Ok, if you think I should print out my words and eat them, I will.

Just that, would you think in the beginning that Greece would win France and advance through in the semis? I wouldn't. I said as much.

After beating France, Police estimats that 300.000 people went out on the Streets in Athens alone. No-one believed what was happening. I still don't...

Our favorite chant goes like... "Pick up/lift the f**king thing, can't wait for it already", so yours truly, ouzoed up to the gills along with some ouzoed up friends, would approach his bike to mini-wearing girls and chanted it to them too... :)  ;7 Too bad I was too drunk to be able to exploit the situation fully.

As for the Butcher's bill, I really can't tell you. Seems that our favorite dish became baked rooster :D and not just that, but we ate all poultry related products. So, no butcher's bill 'cause no rooster to be found. All in all, I think that the best team advanced.  France wanted but couldn't. Greece got lucky, but still, luck IS IN THE GAME, and undoubtedly, Greece was the better team.

As for the celebrations, if we win it, I will probably be dead from exhaustion, ouzo-drinking, and heart-attack. I can't speak, and got a bruised left hand due to the fact that I fell of my bike during the celebrations with france.

Yes, final Holland-Greece. Portugal may still go through, but I have this gut feeling, and I have to spell it out. Before you say that Greece shouldn't make it so far and that I should stop speaking already, I refer you to my quote... :)

As for the game with Sweden...

Really, that was unexpected.....

And what a rough match too (Holland-Sweden). Lots of fouls, 4 yellow cards total, and some really ugly tackles. And Ibrahimovich's "penalty" was a joke, good thing this ref had eyes and a brain. The best thing of the match was Van der Sar's face after he saved that penalty.

Truely awful playing from England too.

Let me put it this way. There were three points in that match when England needed a goal.

At the start, when Portugal scored the equaliser and when they scored the first goal in extra time. Each of those time England needed a goal and each time they scored in under 5 minutes.

Everyone is blaming the ref or the penalty spot but the fact is that we should have pissed all over them. Had England played up to their potential a single disallowed goal wouldn't have changed the outcome.

That said the refereeing was abysmal. Am I the only one who noticed a time when play continued despite the ball having crossed the goal line by more than a foot?

I haven't forgotten about the Czech, and I am not discounting them, no sir. I am just not afraid of them, and I feel we can take them.

Of course, my hometeam is Panathinaikos, and Henriksen (Danish defender) is my ALL TIME DEFENSIVE HERO, and one of the more unknown heros there are.

I repeat the name Henriksen

I think he is the most solid defensive player I have ever seen. I wish him and his team all the luck in the world.

Go Denmark!

** And to all those concerned. Both teams, either Czechs or Danes could easily throw Greece out. However like NEO, I feel in a foolhardly way, that after France, Greece can take on any team.

Must be too much ouzo!!  ;7

I noticed that, I'm not sure the ball crossed but it happened so fast it was hard to tell and I've not seen it since.

England were poor, no doubt (though the defence was top notch for the most part, a lot of people have been ignoring that) but it was robbery, at the end of it all it's not the team that plays best or has the most posession (if that were the case games would have a panel of judges) it's about the amount of goals in 90 minutes. Had that perfectly valid goal been allowed we wouldn't be having this discussion.

I just wish we'd have played the attacking game that we are capable of, we proved we could go out and score when Portugal equalised and when they went ahead, why can't we prove it when we're ahead rather than sit on a 1-0 lead?

The defense was good but was far too deep. With players the quailty England have it's not hard to defend the last quarter of the pitch by simply sticking all your players there. I do wholeheartedly agree that England were robbed but it's the kind of robbery you get if you walk through the roughest area of town with hands tied together and a wad of cash sticking out of your top pocket.

That's the reason why I stopped cheering the Owen goal very early on.

1. England play better when they are behind.
2. England had scored from a long ball forward. The stupid strategy of doing so had worked so I knew that they'd keep doing it. In fact I knew they'd do it more often because they'd keep most of their men in defence.

That's why I like Dutch strategy. Pressure all the way and not sitting on a lead  :D Offensive football owns :p

Though they do have a tendency to get cocky when they're up frotn. But they haven't really shown that this tournament besides in the game against the Czechs. And obviously they learned from it.

I completely agree on all those points. James was not dong his job properly in keeping the defence up the field, I hate defend in the box. Scary stuff. I also hate the long ball, we dominate games when we keep short passes and close posession, why we insist on a stupid ****ing long ball strategy when it NEVER works is beyond me.

I liked the robbery analogy, spot on.

It's just horrible when you know that the team has great potential but just can't perform as a team the second we lose an 18 year old kid (I think Rooney's injury killed our game).

I know. It's a much better strategy. The only reason we held out so long against Portugal was that ever Portuguese midfielder or striker seemed determined to win man of the match and kept taking shots from 25-30 yards out :D

Had we been playing against a team like Brazil we would have been crucified for trying it.

Yeah, they didn't do it this tournament, but they lost plenty of games that way.

And the fact only Cocu missed a penalty this tournament is pretty amazing, compared to Holland-Italy 4 years ago.

I thought they kept doing that because they were afraid of a counter-attack, which England is particularly excelent in doing as was demonstrated in the game. :nervous:

That's a possible explaination for some of them but quite often they had men in the box and ignored them to take a shot which would have made a much better rugby conversion.

Basically there was nothing in that match that didn't disappoint me.

England played badly. Portugal seemed good but that was only cause England was so bad. They gave away possession sloppily too. They certainly didn't play like a team which before Euro started was supposed to be the best one in the competition. Even the refereeing disappointed me. Not just the disallowed goal but I saw some clear fouls commited by England that the ref completely failed to spot.

What match were you watching? England completely failed to retain possession and instead huddled around the goal mouth like the last survivors of a massacre.

Sure their defensive play wasn't bad but the point is that they should never have been playing defensively in the first place. Only an idiot would attempt to defend a 1-0 lead for 90 minutes but that's precisely what England attempted to do even though it had cost us the game against France (not to mention the game against Brazil).

And yes. Beckham missed a penalty against France that would have put us 2-0 up.

Its funny cause its true. Pretty boy can't shoot penalties worth crap.

After today's Czech victory over Denmark, I'm starting to doubt Greek's chances against them. Having the highest scoring Euro 2004 player is bound to give the Czechs the edge. But here's hoping.

oh, and I really, really hope that Portugal thoroughly smashes Holland.  Not only will there be much celebration in my neighborhood (lots of Portugese) but also that I just couldn't bear to see the Dutchies through to the finals. C'mon Karma, show me some love.

****ing hell I've heard too much of this.

I'm a Scotsman, and thus it's my national duty to wish England well in losing to everyone. However, this abuse of Beckham is unfair - he plays solid games, continuous levels of play. Just because he doesn't go charging up and make rooney (sp?) look slow doesn't make him a bad player.

As for penalties - think about how many he's put away in his career against those that he's missed.

It wasn't exactly 'easy'. The entire first half was for the Danish team. Much of the second half as well. That was untill one counter from Czechs put an end to it. :p Once the Czechs smelled blood they went for it. It was over in 15 minutes.

If the Danish had a little bit more finishing capability in this match they could've been up front by 2/3-0 in the first half.

Greeks: Well, what can I say. Small team, great accomplishment. However, will probably not succeed against the Czechs.

Czechs: Pretty awesome team. Haven't lost a single game. But they play a wussy style. Hang back with the entire team on your own half and counter when possible. I hate those pussy tactics. Also, their star Nedved is a whiny *****.

Gotta admit though, hiring Scholari as their coach was a prime move. As much as I respect Sven Göran Erikson, he lacked the balls to remove Beckham from the game, when he saw things weren't going well for him. Scholari removed Figo, twice, despite his 'star' status.

And still after all this time, after eliminating France, winning the host nation, equaling el torros, and losing to a departing squad, still noone gives Greek squad the respect they deserve. Still, they consider them "the mice that roared".

Well, Even if it is curtains today, tommorow everyone will be speaking about Greece. What we did against France to me epitomizes David Vs Goliath and is stuff of myth. I know where I was and what I did that day so that  I may pass it on to my kids (should I be fortunate enough to have them).

hm... I reckon;

Dutch - Probably the best attacking squad, weak defense (converted wide midefielder as a center back, arguablky a bit slow, Davids can be flaky from match to match).  Probably the best striker and winger (Van Nistelrooy and Robbens) in the tournament, but an iffy manager (he bough Bert Konterman for £4m fer ****s sake).  Winners if they can find fluency and get Van Der Meyde to actually play as well as Robbens.

Portugal - Good central defense in Andrade and Carvalho (probably the best in the tournament), great flair in midfield but no outsanding goal scorers, and no good naturally left (footed) winger.  Can beat the Dutch (and win the tournament), provided they can get a reliable goal-scoring threat to go with the defense.  Need to get Cristiano Ronaldo to cross the ball to his own team once in a while, though.

Czech - Good technique, very patient in terms of buildup.  Maybe lack pace - that would be my worry -  except for Baros up front.  Yeah, they play counter-attack - but it works, and well.  The fact they came back from behind to win every game shows their attacking strength.  Probably the most cohesive midfield in the tournament.  The Portugese and Dutch have better individuals (with the exception of Nedved), but neither have struck me as being as cohesive a unit.

Greece - worst individuals out of the 4, but the best tactics and teamwork.  Also just about the only team in the tournament able to hold onto a lead.... albeit they were pretty much outplayed by the Spanish (who threw that match away when Raul missed a sitter), so I'm not sure about they're ability when they're being outplayed, as is likely.

Holland are probably my favourites - simply because the Portugese have problems scoring.  I reckon they'll meet the Czechs again in the final (dangerous as it is to write off the Greeks), and should have learned enough from the group stages to actually take and hold a lead.

As for the Defense: You're totally forgetting Stam and Reiziger. Stam is usually able to take on and stop the best attackers (as proven against Larsson and Ibrahimovich) on his own. He makes up for the converted midfielder. Reiziger is very good at defending the flanks. I admit that defense does have some small cracks in it, but it's certainly not as bad as you make it out to be.

Van Der Meyde needs to be substituted by Overmars. Overmars is arguably the fastest winger in the tournament. He's proven to be able to get past the best defenders and not only on speed but on skill as well.

Robben - v. Nistelrooy - Overmars is my favourite Dutch offense. Its got speed and skill on the flanks and a goal getter as striker.

Yeah, Portugal is a decent team. At the very least. But as you said, miss a good goal getter. Also, i find Christiano Ronaldo a bit... overrated. His fancy tricks (that rarely work) and his abismal crosses really don't impress me.

Figo isn't at the top of his game either ATM.

I agree with this. Besides the cohesive unit part. That's where the Dutch have grown. In the first round they were shaky at best. But against the Czechs, Latvia and Sweden they've provenm to have grown. If they continue this trend I predict great trouble for Portugal and whomever may be in the Final against them.

Quote

Yeah, THE underdog of the tournament. The South-Korea of the EC. Also a foreign coach, little individual qualities but a helluva tight team and good tactics.

I like Overmars as a player- he was a revalation at Arsenal in particular - but every time I've seen him play for Barca he's been almost completely ineffective.

Likewise Reizeger - he's never impressed me in terms of either defensive ability or his attacking (I watch a lot of La Liga  football), and I can understand why Barca brought in Beletti and preferred Gabri as a replacement.  He has looked more impressive for the Dutch than he did last season - for one thing he actually looks like getting a shot on target - but I can still see why Heitinga and even Ricksen have played there.

Stam...is a good player, one of the best centerbacks in the world, but I'm not sure how much he can cope with pacy players.  I think he looked much better with (Frank) de Boer beside him, though - de Boer is still one of the best readers of a game I've seen, it's a shame he's off to Qatar next season.

I think the Dutch team is still a bit shaky... bringing in Seedorf has made a massive improvement, but they've yet to amaze me.  They still look like the team that played Scotland - capable of ineptitude and brilliance from match to match (or even half to half).

Ok, people now it is us Greeks against the Czechs. If we play like the Dutch did, we will be KO'ed and we will probably deserve it.

Although,  I have to admit... I would be rooting for the Czechs had Greece not made it thus far... Which I still think it is a lie, if you ask me...

But then... We got 90 more minutes till we 're eliminated. And if we pass 90 min more till we lose the final, which we may win as well... Who knows? I 've been wrong so many times this Euro cup that I might as well be a sport paper writer. :D

No, of course we are no better. I didn't write that, if I may suggest reading my post again. ;) Yet, as I saw on a german TV show yesterday : "No, dear people from Holland, we're not celebrating that you're out of the Euro; we're rather celebrating that you made it this far." That has nothing to do with offending anyone, but with the joy of having good neighbors sharing the fate. ;)

Though, I'm very concerned what will happen in the future, since former Bayern Munich trainer Hitzfeld declined the offer to become coach of the german team.

In the bottom of the line : no offense. :p

Tommorow, I'm going to watch the finals with my brother and my Greek friend who is really into soccer. We're probably going downtown to Danforth, which is the Greektown in Toronto. Gonna be lots of crazy Greeks, probably lots of crazy Portugese nearby also, and me in the middle. In other words, lots of fun. :D:D

edit: One of the advantages of living in such a diverse town is that you can actually get both sides in close proximity to each other. If you're living pretty much anywhere else in the world, there isn't likely to be large numbers of both Greeks and Portugese.

I can't even tell you what a great time I had. Me and my brother met up with my Greek friend in downtown Toronto, went to the greek neightborhood (Danforth), watched the whole thing in a Greek bar and then went and partied on the streets for like 3 or 4 hours.

So I'm not Greek, who cares, its was awesome. The street was packed, in places you could barely move. We climbed on icecream vans, climbed on top of a building until the cops came and told us we had to get down, several firecrackers, fireworks, a few flares (on of them went in my face, I was like 2m away). I estimate over 20,000 people, though it could have been significantly more.

Damn I love football, too bad Yugoslavia never wins anything. Oh well, Olypmic Basketball is only a month or so away.

Post by: mitac on July 05, 2004, 02:47:27 am
That was truly awesome. Yesterday, I never got the impression the Portuguese were ever in control of the match, the Greek were just brilliant in terms of tactic and teamplay.

And the bottom of the line - offense wins matches, defense wins championships. I guess yesterday everybody was "greek", except for the people from Portugal or Turkey, perhaps. ;)

You know what... Thank You! This is the best thing I have seen and read, and believe me I have read a lot about the fairy tale we all Greeks are living in, since, in any way it cannot ever repeat itself. Either it won't happen, or we will have greater expectations, thus it won't be as surprising.

Well, it all has to end I guess, I just can't seem to fathom it that's all.
