Brothers in Arms: Road to hill 30
Brothers In Arms: Earned in Blood
Call of Duty
Call of Duty 2
Battlefield 1942
Battlefield 2
Medal of Honor Series
Other
Screw this! Stick to F.E.A.R.!

Combat Mission. :P

Nah, of those, I've only played a few, and Call of Duty is better than the MOH games. And BF2 isn't a Second World War game, by the way. It's all Americans in the desert from what I've seen...

Is price an issue? Get Hidden and Dangerous Deluxe for free: http://www.gathering.com/hd2/hddeluxe.html It's much more realistic than all the MoH games (well, as realistic as something published in 1999 will permit :().

Haven't played all of them, but I enjoyed the first CoD the most, in fact it's the only one I enjoyed. I personally can't stand historical shooters most of the time.

My answer is that it depends what you're looking for: Amazing single player experience with incredible graphics, a great multiplayer experience, realism, arcade action.. there's something to cater for everyone. The point being that both Battlefield 1942 and Medal of Honor are great games, but they offer different experiences.

I'd stick to flight sims, Il-2 + Forgotten Battles + Aces Expansion is quite good set.

Soldiers: Heroes of World War II. Don't let the name fool you, it's an excellent game, well worth the cheap price you have to pay for it these days.

Steel Panthers: World at War
Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin

Pacific Fighters
Medal of Honor Series (ALL of 'em, European Assault is the best right now)
Day of Defeat

if you have a DOS emulator, see if you can find a copy of WWII GI. The game is a classic, it's fun, you have lots of explosives, and it plays like Duke Nukem 3D. :D

Close Combat: A Bridge To Far is pretty good, I think you can download it at Home of the Underdogs(www.the-underdogs.org/ (http://www.the-underdogs.org/)) (Just wanted to try out the Glow function :D

EDIT: Woops, looks like Glow Function is FUBAR

As far as multiplayer goes, Day of Defeat is the best I've ever played.

I agree with Fragrag. The whole Close Combat series is badass, a little old but still one of my favorites

Steel Panthers World at War (1930-1949)
if you like turn based tactical skirmishes on a battalion level
no great graphics or whatsover the first game wnt out in 1995 :) )
but it has "everything" in terms of equipment and troop organisation of that period ;7

Oh and if you prefer modern times you could try Steel Panthers Main Battle Tank (1949-2020)
They are both freeware games, Enjoy...

Some people also vow for Steel Panthers: World War 2, yet I am much more a fan of SPWAW's accurate armour, weaponry and generally more sophisticated image. SPMBT's Windows version was released a while ago, so no DOS any more.

However, in true honesty, Combat Missions beat SPWAW in small-level tactical combat (much more accurate). In larger battles, battaillion < X, SPWAW just catches the flow of the battle much better.

[CorporateShill]For an interesting take on a WWII RTS (Real Time Strategy for you newbs), check out 'Blitzkrieg 2'. No gathering resources and arbitrary unit caps here, just call in reinforcements when you get the chance and go nuts. With literally hundreds of units, you've got anything and everything to hit your enemy with, ranging from little scout Kubelwagens, to roaring King Tiger tanks, to mighty bombing strikes that lay waste to half the damn play area (trust me, i'm not exaggerating here). It came out in September, and i'm yet to get it myself, but i've been hooked on the Multiplayer demo for weeks. If you like WWII and RTS Games, this game might just be for you![/CorporateShill]

No WWII action in BF2 stock, although there are modification in the works, the 3 most prominent are

Forgotten Hope 2 - http://forgottenhope.bf1942files.com/
Battlegroup 2 - http://www.battlegroup42.com/
Experience World War 2 - http://www.xww2.com/

All of these have released versions Battlefield 1942.
However If you want some Instant gratification please do go and pick up Battlefield 1942, it's a well established game and despite it's age it still have a little over 3000-5000 online players with many playing the Desert Combat modification.

oh, and can i mention Silent Hunter II (haven't played III yet, but II is very good) and Enigma: Rising Tide? :D

the best part about Rising Tide is voice recognition, where you say orders instead of clicking or typing something. :D
