Title: Possibly Silly Question.
Post by: achtung on November 16, 2005, 04:24:03 pm
This is just out of curiosity:

How much would you guys estimate the rights to Freespace would cost?

I think this has been said before, and it's much more than any of us could really afford.  Over 10K?  id's Q3 engine, just to license it costs about a quarter mil + royalties, that is if you cant abide by the GPL.

The Q3 engine is also a wildly popular component to a game that proved wildly popular with extremely high sales, published by a still-solvent company with profit-making abilities.

The rights to the Freespace series would most likely cost a lot less, given Interplay's current point in its downward spiral. I'd guess a token 5k or so would get the rights from them.... and I'd offer them about that if I still had the bankroll.

But the real question is what happens to the licence if it doesn't get sold and Interplay ceases to exist....?

Well, what I think will happen to it is a comination of "don't even think about it" and "no chance in hell" of it coming anywhere near what we can afford/do.

If it's really 5k, I could actually afford to buy the rights to FS2.

I'd just have to sell all 1193 of my BattleTech minis. I'd probably even have money left over, at that.

On this subject, this will also be a stupid question, but has it ever crossed this community's mind to try and hold a fundraiser to buy the rights?  Granted, I can think of two reasons why it probably hasn't been done.

1.  So many of us are scattered across the globe, so where would the money go?

2.  Assuming it did happen and the rights ended up being the property of HLP, does anyone here really think the community would agree on one set storyline?

just let interplay spiral down the abyss. volitions not the great developer it used to be, seems all their more recent games have flopped. they need to seriously get away from console genres, i have a feeling their new publisher wont let them do a pc only title. if there is a freespace 3, i have a feeling it will be a consoleized crapfest. perhaps they will remake freespace 1 and 2 for consoles, then make a multi- platform release of fs3. either way, it will be more consolized and will probibly sport an engine that sucks in comparison to fsopen.

I'm so tempted to contact interplay :D

But I highly doubt I would even get a response :doubt:

*sigh* not again...

Listen. If anyone's going to pick up the license, it will be a team comprised of the original developers, not some amateur non-entity. Anyone's free to search the archived board for what's been said over and over again. We can't do anything about it except make it known that there's a hardcore fan base for Freespace, and the entire genre.

Heh, well, this is going nowhere, the license will cost a fortune and those that want to obtain it will not be going via this board, be it Interplay, [V] or anyone else, so I'm locking this before it starts going downhill :)
