I have a computer to fix, and the women wants XP on it. The only problem is that it originally came with 98, thus the specs are:
Intel Celeron 600Mhz
256 Mb SDRAM
Onboard graphics
Modem
Add-on Ethernet card
OLD intel chipset (dont remember the exact chipset)
You think it could run it or should I tell her that she needs to buy windows 2000?
-
I had win 2000 running on a Duron 600. I assume a Celeron 600 can run XP. Though the ram may be an issue.
-
Exactly what I thought (the RAM)...
-
I've seen XP Pro run (although slowly) on 233 MHz P2's with 128 MB of RAM.
-
Just turn off the Playskool interface, and you'll be fine.
-
alrighty....
thanks man!
-
It will run fine as long as you turn off all the flashy interface stuff and most of the crap that runs in the background. That basically makes it into 2000 anyway. I used to have it running on a 450mhz P2 with 128MB of memory; the OS memory usage was around 52MB, which wasn't too bad given that the only things I ran on there were basic windows programs and old games.
-
saying it'll run "fine" is cutting it. it'll start. win2k would work a lot better - I've run that quite happily on a 133 Pentium.
-
Yeah, 2K will run a lot smoother on that. If you insist on using XP go research how to turn off all the crap that even Pro has running in the background.
-
Tell her that it may cost extra to tweak it so that it isn't horribly slow.

Yup, that's more or less the specs of my home laptop. It's slow as hell but it does run.

I'll go through the system process and shut off what isnt needed...
thanks guys
PS, i DO know how to shut the XP interface off, so thats no problem!

You might want to customise the install itself, to strip out all the unnecessary crap - check out http://unattended.msfn.org/ for info on that. It speeds things up noticeably. :)

Although I think that's what murdered the video capability of my win2k, so you might want to make sure everything works.
