Title: Can XP Pro run on this machine?
Post by: ZmaN on November 17, 2005, 09:26:34 pm: I have a computer to fix, and the women wants XP on it. The only problem is that it originally came with 98, thus the specs are:

Intel Celeron 600Mhz
256 Mb SDRAM
Onboard graphics
Modem
Add-on Ethernet card
OLD intel chipset (dont remember the exact chipset)

You think it could run it or should I tell her that she needs to buy windows 2000?

Post by: CP5670 on November 17, 2005, 10:00:01 pm: It will run fine as long as you turn off all the flashy interface stuff and most of the crap that runs in the background. That basically makes it into 2000 anyway. I used to have it running on a 450mhz P2 with 128MB of memory; the OS memory usage was around 52MB, which wasn't too bad given that the only things I ran on there were basic windows programs and old games.

Yup, that's more or less the specs of my home laptop. It's slow as hell but it does run.

Post by: pyro-manic on November 18, 2005, 12:27:34 pm: You might want to customise the install itself, to strip out all the unnecessary crap - check out http://unattended.msfn.org/ for info on that. It speeds things up noticeably. :)
