I'm getting really annoyed here. Why can't I download more processor power directly from the net?!?

Nice, textures look a bit low res in some areas (ground etc) but nice.

Woah woah ...they now have a flashlight on the gun ?

That's a giant leap in gameplay right there.

Only a couple of them... the basic weapons (blaster and machine gun). The rest don't have a light.

I wasn't impressed by Quake 4, there were some good moments but the game got really boring little after the Big Body Operation™. As far as late FPS's go, FEAR is much better.

I wasn't expecting much from Quake 4, maybe that's why I liked it. Perhaps that's also why I hated FEAR, because I was expecting that to be good, even though comparing the two they both have about the same focus on mindlessly shooting things.

compair quake 4 to any other fps game out there and its ok, compair it to quake 2 (its plot buddie) and its really awesome. i beat the game and now my copy resides on the shelf of beaten games. the multiplayer sucks, no vehicle matches and no coop. i remember when games always supported coop multiplayer and it was always good, then came the multi only craze which screwed up the way of games having good single player and good multiplayer in one package. i swear game companies dont try anymore to offer the same features older games had, its supposed to be a ****ing upgrade!

They spend more time on making the eye candy. Thus they have less time on such minor details as plot and gameplay.
Put it this way: After graphics they have time to do singleplayer or multiplayer well, or do both poorly... Usually, they either do both poorly, or spend some time on plot and gameplay (read: add even more meaningless eye candy!).
There are exeptions ofcourse...

Damn!  What's the reccomended specs for that monster?

Then I can see how many thousands of dollars I need to get mine up to that level.
I'm sorry, but two years ago's state of the art is not this year's state of the art.

The shine and spec maps on most of the stuff looks pretty ****ty, if you ask me.

And the level of detail varies horrifically wildly throughout.

Throughout most of the game, the quality of graphics is pretty good.  there's some amazing moments such as the blackbird landing, and some panoramic shots that you get to see while you're riding in elevators and such.  Attention to details is cool, but like an0n said, the quality levels are inconsistent.  Ground textures look like garbled mush, whereas textured objects look really nice.    Like I posted in the FEAR impressions thread, I'm sick of how developers spend weeks of time on little parts of the maps.  Such things like rotating bridges, things that move around but do not serve any other purpose than scenery, and such. Time should be spent lengthening the plot and increasing the playable content in the game.  Cutting off content just because they didnt have time to get to it because they were taking months to figure out how to make something work and look really cool is just plain dumb.  Games that can be finished in a weekend are starting to feel like renting a movie.  Instead of watching, you play, and spending 45 dollars on a movie is plain ridiculous.
" Well, look at the multiplayer capabilities!"
Like Nuke said, no vehicle maps.  UT 2K4 had vehicles! LOTS! and they were actually fun to drive and fly!  UT 2K4 has a great balance of gameplay plus eyecandy to make it look nice but also a blast to play.  Quake 4 is like quake 3 Arena, fast and dirty gameplay, that's been done before.  And what gives with the old maps in the new game?!  It feels to me that they've been shrunk in size!  I remember "The Longest Yard" and "Xaero Gravity" to be a LOT bigger in Q3A.  (My two favorite MP maps... butchered!)
Quake 4 is a great game to play when you just want to hop in and shoot things. Shoot things in a cinematic experience.
I expect many more hours of my time to be eaten up playing through the mission packs for Quake 2.

To be frank, the only differences I see between this and Doom 3 are better lighting throughout and non-borked character models.

EDIT: That and I tend to spend less of my time backing up through the levels because danger always came from behind me.

The day of the industry having "Heart" is dead.  Now we just get interactive hollywood movies. :doubt:

And people like me who always have the worst luck in choosing apartments without DSL capability (and a town that charges $60/month for cable internet ALONE) are forced to buy them no matter what.  I can download the demos at work and bring em home, but they're not a good representation of the whole game.  (Deus Ex:Invisible War, anyone?)

Apparently the Doom3 engines normal mapping (or is it per-pixel lighting?  I forget...) limits the sensible dimensions you can have for textures.

I'm sure they used the Doom3 Mars image in that first shot though ;)

How does it play? I'm assuming they have lowered the poly count on actors slightly for increased speed (looking at the 2nd picture appears to confirm this). There does seem an awful lot of Doom 3 textures in there.

It's not that I'm that interested to be honest, just another FPS, matter how ingenious the plan is to take over the Earth/Rule the universe/destroy all sentient life it usually boils down to running round shooting things. Not a bad thing, just way way overplayed now. More out of curiousity than anything else ;)

Just finished the game (on GForce 4 Ti 4200, 64 mb, - 800x600, medium detail).

Better than expected. Excellent at the begining, gets worse at the end.

The flashlights and your fellow marines are cool, and the most memorabble scene is the landing of the USS Hanibal. Damn, it's blasted those defensive turrets in a second and it's huge! When it finally lands you really do feel like an ant.

Other than that, later it's gets too much into that one man army ****. You against a kazzilion overpowered enemies that for some reason can take a whole arsenal before going down...
And that "everyone else failed" crap. I hate those million setbacks that you and only you can fix.

they should have jsut nuked the whole planet.
