Well, I'm trying find further uses for my HOTAS setup besides FS2. And since it's been some time that I've played any jet fighters sim, I'd like to give it a try again.
Basically I'm looking for something like a modern version of "U.S. Navy Fighters".
What I'd like:
- Jet fighter age (that excludes all the WWII era sims, which I'm sure there are plenty of good ones)
- Something newer than USNF, but older than 2002/2003, so my machine can handle it easily (which rules out LOMAC)
- Carrier based operations are a must, I miss the thrill of carrier landings
- Option to fly several planes would be nice, but not necessary
- Complex simulation doesn't scare me away, but I lack the time for something as complex as Falcon 4.0
So far my googling has brought me leaning towards "Jane's F-18", but the reviews are somewhat mixed.
Now, I'm open for suggestions, as I'm sure some people here have played other sims I've probably never heard of. I'd like to hear especially if there's any decent Harrier sims worth playing, as I haven't found one, but flying the Harrier was a lot of fun in USNF.
So fire away.

SU-27 Flanker?
-
Flanker 2.5 might be what you are looking for.
-
Jane's F-18 is very good, and there was even a mod at one point to allow you to fly an F-14, although I'm not sure if it's still available.
If you don't mind not having carrier operations, Jane's F-15 is good as well. :)
-
Hmm, I have the old Flanker 1.0, and while it's an excellent sim it's completely lacking in gameplay. And the reviews for Flanker 2 are even more varying than for Jane's F/A-18, but the graphics seem pretty.
I have Jane's F-15 on my old gaming machine in old-school Voodoo2-goodness. It kicks ass (given its age), but I really miss carrier action.
-
wasnt there an F-22 sim that was pretty good? not sure there would be any carriers in there though
-
The only ones I consider good are older then that.
I do have an old Jetfighter I disk lying around. :P Jetfighter II and Falcon 3.0 Gold Edition (which included the Operation Fighting Tiger, Hornet, and MiG-29 expansions.) as well, somewhere. Before you get scared by the Falcon title, the realism is scalable. Graphically there are no two ways about it. They suck. First-generation 3D by far. But I loved the gameplay.
IMO MiG-29 is the greatest flight sim ever made. It had an interesting mix of ease and difficulty that made it so. Dogfighting was so much easier then with a Hornet or an F-16, or indeed anything else I'd tried to that point, because the sim included the ability of the MiG-29 for off-boresight missile launches...it's wonderful to be able to launch a heatseeker up somebody's tailpipe without having to get him into your forward arc. On the other hand, ground attack is a whole different ballgame. Have you ever tried a SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defences) mission with only those Kh-23 beam-rider missiles and iron bombs? It's nuts, a fight for your life every step of the way, but damn fun.

JetFighter 3, Total Air War (not entirely good graphics, but it has some decent gameplay) and... when did F/A-18 (forgot which one) Operation Iraqi Freedom come out?
-
YEAH! Jetfigher 3 was actually a really good game (but, er, they only claimed it to be a simulator, but it really is more of a complex arcade thingy). ;p
-
Try F-22 Lightning 3. It was good, but it pales in comparison to Jane's Combat Simulations.
RIP Jane's :(.
-
im looking for a fairly realistic chopper sim myself. all the ones ive played have been too unrealistic.
-
Seems like this whole genre has shrivled up to make way for the ever expanding FPS market. Quite sad actually
-
Does LOMAC have carrier landings?

I'd say so, yes. (http://lo-mac.com/ss/carrier_3.jpg)

Comacnche Gold?
-
i think i played comanche but it was to arcadeish, didnt have realistic torque physics it was more or less point and shoot. never played longbow. flightsim 98 had good choppers but it wasnt a combat sim.
-
Longbow 2 is the way to go for realistic helo action.
I also found those upgrades to Jane's F/A-18 that UT mentioned: http://tsh.war-fighters.net/install/ Quite amazing stuff they have there
-
Enemy Engaged: Comanche/Havoc (EECH) is now open source and is undergoing a revival similar to FS2. This is a great, realistic helo sim with a dynamic campaign.
Get more info in the EECH forum at SimHQ.
