Argh.
…well, not one of the best words to start this, but it was the first thing that came up in my mind when I read this.
Let me quote from UK’s PC Gamer, page 22.
“As one series was reborn, another glimmered and flickered before disappearing from the radar. Freespace 3 was rumoured to be appearing at Microsoft’s X05 event as an Xbox 360 title, according to a leaked X05 flyer. The game didn’t show but The Spy’s heart is quickened by the revelation that a mystery rights-holder has recently been touting the licence for the brilliant space combat game, according to Dere Smart of Universal Combat fame.”
…When I read it, I got happy. Then I remembered the dross that Derek Smart made. And I remembered something along the lines of him telling the world that he was going to buy (and ravish the poor poor license many numerous times, in ways even the most sickest…sicko ever can’t even dream of).
…please, for the love of the Signs, tell me that:
A) Derek Smart did NOT get the license
B) That somebody worth of the license got the license *cough[V]cough*
C) That there will be an FS3
…
I’ll stab myself with a mechanical pencil in the eye now; I can remember from way back, when the VWatch still existed that there’s an artist out there that stabs people in the head with one if they even thought about FS3.
*waits patiently for other people to stab him in the eye*
((Sidenote: Woo...breaking the FS3 rule and the DS rule in one go...Naming hi...he...it, three times))
-
:welcome: <Should be in red in this case. ;)
DS didn't get the license.
Interplay still owns the license.
No FS3.
-
...*is shot with the BFGreen that's actually a BFRed in disguise* x.x!
Well, taht is great news in any case. ye gods...
Thanks for the shot; I will chersh it and show it off to people.
...
Hmmm...I do wonder _WHY_ PCGamer came out with this rubbish; they're reliable overall taken, right?
-
The Freespace 3 for Xbox flyer was fake...
EDIT; Oh, do NOT suggest community made FS3. You'll be fed to Carl.
Again, welcome and enjoy your stay. :) ...Someone give him the speech.
-
>>; *cough* I know about Carl.
...n.n; The fluffy and cuddly pet Shivan, right? I won't suggest FS3. By anyone. I don't hold much hopes for it, since...meh. Interplay. Should say it all. (Did they not ax Descent 4 too, at some point?)
Anyhow: Thankee-sai for the welcome.
-
No probs. Have fun here.

Heh, as far as I'm aware, DS does not have the license, but be aware that even if he were attempting to obtain it, is not information I suspect he would make us privy to after our last clash of opinions.
That said, I feel that [v] are very proud of Freespace 2, and the recent resurge in praise for the game from the computing press will no doubt make Interplay, as it attempts to rebuild itself, all the less likely to wish to sell such rights on, since they are a potential gold mine should there ever be a rise in Space-based shooters. And trust me, it will come back eventually, like clothing styles, it's only a matter of time ;)
If Interplay were to use the rights, I think they would use it for a longer term profit than a quick sale, it's not fast cash injections they need, it's a steady flow, investors will be wary after recent events, and you get those by marketing games, not selling off the rights.
Anyway, whatever happens, you can rest assured that HLP will continue backing FS2 and the Open Source :)
Welcome aboard.

Hmmm...I do wonder _WHY_ PCGamer came out with this rubbish; they're reliable overall taken, right?
They don't check their sources, apparently. :)
The flyer was real, but it was Photoshopped and posted on this forum to include FS3 as a practical joke. Somehow the Photoshopped version got spread all over the place to the point where people have seen it who have never visited this forum. :)
-
I notice that post doesn't blame the person responsible for the joke :p
-
I wasn't trying to avoid blame, I was trying to be humble and not announce that I was the one who did it.
Seems there's uncertainty about whether the spread of that picture was something to be proud of or something to be embarrassed of. Personally, I'm proud of it. :)
-
Descent 4
*fires earthshaker missile*
Got to be careful with the descent lurkers :D
-
Personally, I'm proud of it. :)
Can't blame you for that. It's their own bloody fault if they'll simply post a picture without checking the source. Especially in a day and age when photoshop is so easy to get hold of.
-
How I wish you could put things like that on your CV though ;)
'Accidentally fooled Computer Press into thinking Freespace 3 was going to be on the XBox'
That's very nearly a 'Goob wins the Internet' moment, at the very least a high end-of-level boss ;)
-
/me wins the Internet!

Oooohhhhhh, Turnksy? We found 'im!
Welcome to the HLPBB. ;)
God, did I actually start to type Welcome to VBB there?
-
FS3 for x-box 360 would suck. the platform looks cool, but for $400!?!?!?!?!!? GET A LIFE!!!!
I like video games a lot, but JEEZ!!! I could buy a go-cart or upgrade my computer for that much. And at least you can do other stuff with the comp...... (thinking) wow...400 dollars...what a waste of money...people should at least wait until it goes down in price...I can see it now: CLEARANCE SALE: X-BOX 360 -- $30 dollars - from a walmart in China
-
Hey Odd Writings, be assured DS shouldn't be anywhere near the license right now. Welcome to HLP. :)
:welcome:

I didn't realize this went that far..its sort of funny.
From what I understand, DS does not own the license and that it may be in better hands. But I don't think 2006 will be the year of the return of the space sim. Maybe 2007. Heck RPG's were dead once...now look at them!
-
What if intercra..... I mean interplay did make the next installment of freespace, what would be the chances of volition having a hand in it.. null probably, am I right?
Hmm, thinking of it, I would probably resist buying it if interplay made it w/o volition expertice, umm, for a time anyway before I bought it.
I`m stupid.......... Umm, unrelated question, where are the smillies... Frowns with a slight wimper because he can`t find it. Help please........

yea I am a retard, but can someone tell me why it was so BAD that derek smart (whoever he is) was going to buy the lisence? when did he try to do it? why didnt he succeed
-
http://www.werewolves.org/~follies/ Neat little page I found with google.
If this doesn't answer your question I don't know what will.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derek_Smart Wikipedia info.

Whee...thanks for the welcome. I will try to actually make myself useful what with being a writer. *points at S/N*
...yes, an odd writer, I know. e.e; but at least I am not as scary as the other half of him (who sent me in here to see if it was safe to show face here, what with...uhm. yah.)
Thanks for the info too; I _KNEW_ something was wrong with the game I tried to play. e.e; five bucks well spent, though; I have a shiny saucer now hanging in my room.
*finds it funny; been a random guest ever since start 2004, and now actually took the step to become a member*
Random note: I am not Turnsky. e.e;

You know those time when you read something about someone you've never met and instantly dislike them?
Do you also know those times when you're reading something and you get a sudden freak idea about a way to hurt\embarass\kill something?
Reading about this Derek guy is possibly the only time I've ever had both things happen at the same time....
@Goober: Crap! Now I have to tell the Shivans not to annihilate Microsoft to keep FreeSpace out of the wrong hands! ...on second thought... Nvm. They have yet to pay for the abomination known as Windows ME and I still feel that Gates has betrayed me with the Xbox.

The man has excellent ideas, I'll give him that. That only makes it even more horrible, because you can tell his games had a real chance of being good, but he went and ****ed it up to the point where it's just barely this side of beyond recognition.
And he can't acknowledge that. And he thinks he's God Almighty or something.
-
And he thinks he's God Almighty or something.
The correct term I believe he used is "Alpha male".

Well excuse me. I didnt know my computer was an abomination to you higher beings. Thanks for dissing my computer.
Statistically I'm the only ME user on HLP. It works jus fine, thank you. :P[/color]

How DARE you insult the GREAT DR. DEREK SMART, PHD! The greatest video game developer of ALL TIME! Anything negative you say about him is reason enough for his majesty to SUE YOU!
Sarcasm aside, SA's Universal Combat review speaks for itself: http://www.somethingawful.com/articles.php?a=2010
-
The thing is, I've never even encountered The Smart's rantings or ravings. I just got BC:M from a friend who knew I was into detailed simulations. Seriously, you can see glimmerings of excellence in there. This game really could have been the game to end all games. The concept alone sounds like a space-sim fan's wet dream.
But it's just a concept.
The execution was for crap. I can live with the poor modelling; I actually liked several of the ship concepts. I can live with what has been described as "very bad midis". I actually liked some of those too. I can enjoy uberdetailed simulation; if I enjoyed playing Falcon 3.0 with detail all the way up, or Outpost as originally designed sounded cool, detail ought to be a plus.. But dammit, the game is falling apart. The interface is clunky. The interface defines clunky. The keyboard shortcuts are so numerous that when I actually decided to give it a second try and memorize the important ones, I ended up with a list almost a page long. I memorized it anyways. The interface isn't just not intuitive, it's actually counterintuitive, a charge often leveled by reviewers at games they don't like, but only justified in my mind for this one game. The keyboard shortcuts don't always work. The interface doesn't always work. If there's a button there on the screen, and you click it six times in a row, and nothing happens, something is seriously wrong. Even more damnable, the failures aren't predictable. I was never able to figure out a specific set of circumstances which would reproduce any of them.
And a stable game? What's that? Can I eat it? I actually saw a Blue Screen of Death five minutes into the game the first time I played it; I hadn't seen one of those in years, I didn't even think Windows XP had a BSOD. BC:M has an annoying habit of crashing to desktop at roughly thirty minutes of playing time since you last started it up. Not exactly thirty minutes, though, oh no, that would be predictable. Instead there's a variety of times within a ten-minute range in either direction.
Even so, even with all this, I actually enjoyed playing the game. But to play a game, it has to be actually playable, which is a rare event indeed with Battlecruiser Millenium. I put, at best guess, 72 hours of time into it, and got perhaps 12 hours of actual playable game time.
Thus, even though when it worked I enjoyed it, BC:M must be considered the most craptacular game it has ever been my displeasure to install onto my computer. I leave it there now, as a little reminder to me that no matter how deeply I hate Relic, or Valve, or the folks of the SCP (sorry guys, but bugs are bugs), or whoever else's game is currently screwing up on my computer for reasons unknown and possibly unknowable, whatever is frustrating me now isn't actually too bad.
-
no matter how deeply I hate Relic, or Valve, or the folks of the SCP (sorry guys, but bugs are bugs)
But we fix our bugs. :(

There there...*patpat* It isn't as bad as people may make it sound.
...hm...
Me, I am gonna delve into DSmart's happy go lucky rantage at Werewolves and Avault. heck, I may even go ahead and see what happens if I go and read the 3000 AD forums.
...
I can't believe that even Interpray has thought about selling the Freespace license to this...this...uhm.

fs3 flyer for xbox360, aye. why havent i seen this yet?
-
There have been like 6 threads on it at this point, all going back to a thread (was it Deepblue's?) that contained a list of XBox360 games supposedly up for pimpage at E3 or something. Goob edited the image to include Freespace 3, someone posted it off-site thinking it was real, and the fake ended up overtaking the real one somehow.
And ROFL at that pic CP.
:wakka:
-
I'm at least partially to blame, for pointing it out. Still have the pic in fact. Keep in mind it's fake.
-
ah i see. i thought it was some A5? type piece of paper with a some rendered stuff with FS3 on it. kinda like a Call Of Duty or BF2 flyer ive seen.
-
x.x! *finally home after the sudden hit of what seems to be a Sathanas crashing down on to the Forums* >>;
ye gods, many people have posted. And...o.o that pic up there from the flyer. Is that the whole one, or is there a bigger one that people can poke at?
-
Heh, I'm beginning to suspect that PhP, if uploaded to a Sathanas' onboard computer would have independance day-esque effects ;)
-
o.0? PhP? do tell do tell...n.n;
Not the language, I think, so...e.e;
-
LOL Yeah, I meant the language, judging by the troubles HLP had between servers, it would at least give us time to retreat before the Sathy fired, possibly take a short holiday as well ;)
-
interesting thing: i ran a search for the FS2 SCP on the other boards here adn there.
Found this:

Go to the last post. its about a guy who knows somebody in :v: and contacted them recently...in other words, possible insider source for devilish plans and stuff :drevil:
