You chance will come soon. Here's a new pic with the final skins:
Also, I've shaved it down to 3139 polys from 7757. The only thing is that I authentically copied the size, so it's only 646 meters long (OK, so I was off by 5 meters). I hope to release it within a week.

Wow, sweet. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) Is that triangulated or untriangulated?

*sigh* too bad it won't fit into Freespace.

It works in FS2.

15 different subobjects for the main hull alone.

wow
-
Is it possible to do the 15 subobjects then use a command or feature to merge the 15 subojects together to form one single object? This can be done in 3D Studio Max R3. It reduces the amoount of faces and polygons I think.

if your talking about booleans, don't even try. the model looks messed up in FS2.

are you gonna use the thruster03.ani for the bussard ramscoops? just make them thrusters. it'll look cool.

Yes, that's it. Booleans. I use it most of the time to create grooves or merge subobjects together. Works for me though. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

well it doesn't work for me, which means it might not look right in a bunch of other people's copies of FS2. and even if it did, it would no longer be 15 sob-objects and therefore won't fit in FS2.

Mainly TS1, but this model originally started as 3DS format, by someone else. I pretty much just kept most of the body from that and redid rest of the ship (nacelles, saucer, etc.) Oh yeah, I also did all the texturing.

TrueSpace 1? I think I have that program somewhere but since I don't know how to use it, I never installed it. I only have 3D Studio Max R3.
So, let's say I want to create a model for FreeSpace 2, what's the maximum number of polygons that my model can have? 10,000?

800 per sub-object.
-
Actually, now that I think of it, this came in MAX format. I have MAX R3 too, but I'm still learning to use it.
-
Lucky for me then. I learnt how to use 3D Studio Max R3 in school. But so far, I can do the basic functions only and make simple models.
Only thing is that 3D Studio Max can sometimes crash on my PC. Imgine creating a nice model for 2 hours and then it crashes. And you didn't save it at all.

... In fact it increases the polycount and vertice count in a tremendous way. Never use boolean, or learn how to well vertices first, coz you'll have to merge vertices after that (most of the work when I converted the descent3 models, since they were made of intersecting elements)

If this model works fine, may I please use it in my Alpha Quadrant project?

I wanna throw a sath at it! That would make one cool Star Trek Episode!
"Sir! We have a hull breach on decks 1 through... well... all of them!"

That's what will be happening in my campaign, the Alpha Quadrant campaign. The Shivans pay a visit into the Star Trek universe. While they primarily battle the Klingons to begin with, the Federation lends a hand seeing as the Klingons are our allies. But all hell breaks loose when the first Sathanus comes onto the scene. But the surprise ending will be the best part of the campaign...

the surprise ending is: The Borg save the day

You have to remember I'm using the actual size of the ship (646 meters, well, okay, it's 5 meters too long, but it's hard doing scaling.) And Nick, you can use this model once it's completed.

Huh? The enterprise is only 646 meters long?!

Enterprise-A wasn't much bigger than a Fenris (around 300 meters long). Enterprise-B was about 50% longer. Enterprise-C was a little over 3/4 the size of Enterprise-D, and Enterprise-E pulls in between 700 and 800 meters.

When I said "Pretty small ship", I was actually comparing it to FreeSpace 2 ships.
By the way, can you tell me how big is 640 metres? Maybe compare it with something like a football field or something? Because I don't want to be walking around my neighbourhood with a measuring tape. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

640 meters is 2100 feet, about 7 football fields long. That's twice the size of the Nimitz ("http://www.chinfo.navy.mil/navpalib/factfile/ships/ship-cv.html") aircraft carrier. Still seems pretty small for what they seem like on the show though. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
Incidentally, the crew for the aircraft carriers are about 5000. (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Hmm. Checking the ST:TNG Technical Manual, it took from July 2343 to October 2363--over twenty years...and that was with 24th century technology!
With our current tech level...geez, we can't even make a weld that could handle velocities reaching half-lightspeed...plus just accelerating would turn the crew to thick'n'chunky salsa (inertial damping fields anyone?)...
But if I made an overly optimistic guess, I'd put our construction of a vessel of comparable capabilities with our current manufacturing capacities at just under 150 years, barring technological R&D, trial and error, and financial muck-ups.
-
The Enterprise would be about the size of a Deimos, yes?

Now can everyone see why the scale of things in FS2 is totally messed up?
FYI, a meter is essentially the equivalent of a yard, plus an inch or so.

Acceptable trade. Although my weapons are in the beta version, I'm still modifying them and editting them to get them right. Plus the sounds are all different unless you use them packaged with the AQp2. So it might be a bit confusing. Plus I'm still working on adding the sounds for some of the alien beam weapons such as the polaron beams and such.
But I will email you the stuff you want asap. Is the Enterprise ready yet?
-
No, still working on the TBL entry, and the model lacks debris. Has anyone noticed there is no real point to most debris on capships because 90% of the time the capships shockwave destroyes the debris?

How will the turrets look on the Enterprise-D? Plus, are you going to have any thruster glows? I suppose you could tile them all the way around the warp nacelles, but that would probably slow down FS2 or something...
Will this Enterprise have docking points? And will it have a fighterbay in the appropriate positions? Perhaps have three fighter/shuttle bays like in the show. Two on the neck and one big one on the top-rear of the saucer section.
After making all the subsystems, you might want to create some alternate subsystems, like the defector dish, bridge, etc. Will you be able to 'blow off' the nacelles (like how the dishes, etc on the AWACs gets blow off)?
You should have a go at making two models out of the Enterprise D... One is the saucer section and the other one is the drive section (battle section). In the game they can be docked together with the drive section moving the saucer section around etc. And then it can disconnect in an emergency like in the show.
I wish I could make models so that I could help you.
Great job so far!

Let's see:
Turrrets: Due to the fact that FS2 requires turrets to be a separate subobject if you wan them damaged, they are very small cubes which you will not really notice in-game.
Docking Points: Yes
Fighterbays: Maybe
Nacelles that blow off: No, because when the naccelles are destroyed the whole ship would be destroyed, but they might be subsystems.
Separatable parts: Probably not.

May I just suggest then, make the Impulse engines the engine subsystem, and just make the nacelles as separate subsystems that have no effect on the engines. Coz really they're just for warp not for sublight speeds.
What about thruster glows? Perhaps have them on the impulse engines (except they're red - and if the Enterprise-D is friendly it'll be blue/yellow).
Where will the docking points be?
Will you add shields (similar to the shielded deimos)?

there's a limit of about 15 glows per model, so tiling them is not an option...

Status Report: 15 August 2001
Well, there's only about 20 ships left to reskin, however, they're getting increasingly harder to do, since I left the most difficult to last. Joining forces with White Dove was a great idea, we have been playing around with some Star Trek style sounds. We now have a speaking Klingon and a Romulan wingman, plus tonnes of new sounds for the voices/special folder. I have been playing around with the sounds.tbl file and have finally unloaded all of the other sounds for weapons, etc. I've only got half the beam sounds to go, but that shouldn't take too long.
I have also been fiddling around with mission making for the Alpha Quadrant campaign. I have almost finished a mission to accompany the Alpha Quadrant project's release. It's set in the Utopia Planitia shipyards in high orbit of Mars. A rogue Romulan faction decides to attack. I have filled the events editor to the brim so that there is a lot of commosion going on with ships moving about, and messages from your wingmen and your enemy, plus I have used variables for some of the enemies motives (for a certain reason). Plus I have revived something from one of the early FS1 missions where you had to kill an Ace, and this Romulan terrorist Ace is a very good pilot and seems to talk too much.
