Every time I try to run the game nothing happens. My mouse cursor will turn to an hour glass for around 30 secods then turns back to normal. Opening the task manager before trying to start the game doesn't even show the .exe loading into memory. I've tried setting the game to Windows 95, Windows 98/ME, and Windoes NT compatibility modes. I've also got the game patched to the latest version.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can get the game to run? It pisses me off that I spent over $70 for this game, and Silent Threat, and it doesn't even work.

That's an oddity I don't remember encountering before with FS1. What did you try using compatability mode on? The Freespace.exe file? If so try doing it with the FS.exe file and seeing what happens.
This might not be that useful but try running the FRED.exe to see if that works (it will rule out the chance that certain files are corrupt at least).

FRED loads fine. Changing the compatibility mode on FS.exe has the same results.
I tried making images from the CDs using Alcohol 120% to see if it was a problem with my CDs. I went ahead and reinstalled the game also, and now it won't even pacth!
I have Freespace 2 around here somewhere. Is there a MOD or anything that will allow my to run Freespace 1 in Freespace 2's engine?

Have you applied both patches? You need the 1.06 patch, plus the 106EAX sound patch for it to work...
There is always FSPort (it's one of the Hosted Projects) if you can't get it to run, but there's something about the first game that gives it a very different atmosphere to FS2...
-
No I've only tried that 1.06 patch. I'm not found of EAX and turn it off in games when I have the option, so I didn't install that one. I'll give it a try anyways and see if it helps. Thanks.

Well since noone else did this
:welcome:

On a completely unrelated note, "Widows XP" makes a strange amount of sense.

You didn't buy it recently, though, did you? cause you should be able to get it on Ebay for $5.

i ran original FS on XP without any problems or putting any compatibility options.
check all your drivers are up to date

pece, it's not a driver issue. ;) he's running a game from the mid-1990's, whereas he's got a computer made in 2002.
try doing a complete reinstall of FS1, and set the video tab to Direct 3D. oh, and install DirectX just to be safe. (i know we all have DX9c, but bear with me, i always install older versions just to be sure)
-
Likewise. I'm running XP SP2, latest Nvidia drivers on a 5200 card. I did an install from my original FS discs just recently and had a mountain of problems until I patched the game. This was so I could side-by-side original FS against FSPort running under the latest SCP.
Death by anagrams. Install everything to default. Patch, update everything, and if all else fails, get FSPort. Simply stunning.

i'm able to run FS1 on a PC made in 2k4. your point?

that is a BAD idea. more often then not, older version of directx tend to mess up the whole windows installation.
