Title: The ads here
Post by: Fury on December 09, 2005, 12:46:09 pm
The ads you see on HLP mainpage, forums, etc, are all text ads. No pop-up ads, no images, no flash. As most of you are using Firefox and adblock or equivalent, we would like to ask you not to block ads on hard-light.net. We need to pay for the server's monthly fee after all, and all the extra that does not go to paying the monthly fee, will be saved for rainy days. Click an ad or two a day if you feel like it. :)

well, sure I could buy that. but even if it's got text on it, it's not automagically a text ad:

It's not an ad. :p It is a hit counter. Which I hope will be removed because of Google Analytics and Webalizer.

It sure looks like an ad to me.

Semantics, I don't like it any more than you do. Sandwich likes the statistics it gives, but now that we're using both webalizer and google analytics, I hope Sandwich will find them to be sufficient and removes the annoying alexa hit counter.

"duck test (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duck_test)". If it looks like an ad, and behaves like an ad, it's most definitely a duck.

Alexa has been known for making spyware in the past.
Title: Re: The ads here
Post by: Sandwich on December 10, 2005, 06:22:18 am
Yes, it has been known for that. Don't click on that image - it doesn't do HLP any good. :p I've yet to check out the other hit tracking systems we have, so I haven't removed the HitsLink thing (the Alexa image) yet.

Timewarp. Slow tech response (for getting hosted FTP logins). Downtime ( :nervous: ). Database corruption.

Shall I go on?

See, we all know that we've had a disproportionate downtime since we moved away from Gamespy. That was to be expected during the move. From now on, once things are properly settled, we should have much better service than before, and we should be able to provide much better service to our hosted websites.

So yeah, Gamespy had problems. We had problems during the move. They should be over soon. And we shouldn't be asking people to click on ads. :p

If you put pr0n ads on the site then you wouldn't need to ask anyone to click on them. ;7

TIM3W4RP!!!

It's not possible to disable those obnoxous IE exclusive rendering tags, is it?  A scrolling box with text half-out of it isn't exactly indicitive of a working page to me.

Opera lost me about the time I saw the ads. And then lost me even more so when I switched to Phoenix (now Firefox).

I still haven't heard a real good reason to move back....I doubt it'll get movies working on my comp.

How about the fact that neither is entirely standards compliant? (http://nanobox.chipx86.com/browser_support.php#summary)

Well, I don't have much regard for the standards, really. They seem geared towards a corporate taskforce, which I guess is no surprise, just very annoying to see "proper" HTML get more and more complex with each iteration.

That's because the likes of MS sit on the standards board.

Bollocks. XHTML is less complicated than HTML. Sure, it's more stringent (this is a good thing, especially for the parsers) but it also uses a simplified set of markup elements. Many useless and ugly tags (e.g. font, center) have been deprecated from the standard in favor of easier, more elegant alternatives (i.e. CSS).

BTW: The marquee tag is not and never was part of any HTML standard. It's a bogus tag invented by MS.

Why they added support for it in Firefox is beyond me, though...

/me steps out of closet

backwards compatability?
Title: Re: The ads here
Post by: StratComm on December 14, 2005, 03:51:59 pm
If that means backwards [browser] compatibility, then yes.  For it to actually be backwards-compatible, the feature would have had to have been a part of a real standard at some point in the past, which marquee, glow, and a number of others never were.

Is it all in Swedish?  I could only imagine how funny South Park sounds in Swedish.
Title: Re: The ads here
Post by: kode on December 15, 2005, 04:38:52 pm
hehe, no. fortunately we believe in the power of subtitles instead of dubbing. kiddy movies and stuff like that's usually dubbed alongside the original language (that is, you can choose what showing you want to see, the dubbed or the subbed one).

I think that's a big reason as to why swedes are generally quite good at english even if it's only second language to most.
