[q]A fire is continuing to blaze at a fuel depot in Hertfordshire after a series of large explosions sent black smoke drifting across south-east England... In total, 20 petrol tanks were involved, each said to hold three million gallons of fuel.[/q]
That's gonna sting my petrol budget this week.

It's making a right mess of the washing, I'll say that :(
-
Ouch. Looks like London's in for some extra-tasty smog this week...
-
I just got back from the place. It being Sunday and we being bored students - we decided to go on a quick road trip to have a look. We got within about a couple of KM of the place before we hit a police boundary line. Suffice to say the fire and smog cloud was huge. I'll upload shots in a bit (although they're not very good.. couldn't find a decent position).

Is panic buying petrol a sport in the south or something?
-
Ouch. Thats alot of oil. Watch out for sea monsters invadeing your shores in the cover of the smoG!

Or playing too much SimCity ?
good one!

Silly Brits, everyone knows it's called Gas, not Petrol.
-
/me batters Jetmech senseless with a dictionary, a book on basic substance states, and a barrel of oil for good measure.
-
Yes, anyone calling a fluid 'gas' shouldn't be bragging about it ;)
-
See, here's one place where no one has it right. Petrol(eum) is the common name for the family of hydrocarbons from which gasoline is derived. If I were to sell you a tub of vasoline and tell you it was petroleum, I'd be telling you the truth. It makes sense for a fuel company to be called a petroleum company, because they deal in the crude oil that makes all of the various constituants. But as for what you put in to your car, the distinction is actually very important.
EDIT: Yeah, so I can't spell :p
-
Petroleum; from the latin petra (rock) and oleum (oil)
-
even though i live and have lived in America for much of my life, i can truly say that it's "Petrol", and not "Gas". gas is a state of matter. also, it's a robot, not a traffic light :)
-
Ok, by show of hands, just how many of you actually thought I was being serious?
-
Been reading The Kraken Wakes, yes?
Where did smog come into the Kraken Wakes?
-
Ok... I've rapidly picked the clearest shots and put them up. Apologies for the blur but it was getting dark and I didn't have a decent oppertunity to set up a tripod.

As close as we got to the site... about 2KM out I reckon. You can clearly see the flames/smoke over the top of the buildings. By this time it was pretty much night time.

Another shot of the same location.

Earlier in the day, and further away from the site.

A slightly zoomed out shot from the same location.

The affected sunset that day. The cloud around the sun is a result of the smoke from the fire.

A night time shot of the moon over a house. Just below the moon you can clearly see the black smoke plumes from the oil depot.

'Gas' is short for 'gasoline'. Little kids know this, but it's no surprise to me that most people here don't. Gas is much more proper name for petrolium. Gasoline is a product of petrolium, it is not the same thing. The fact the word 'gas' is being disputed is embarassing. The same word may have multiple meanings...
Damn brits with their bastardized English language...

And I thought London's weather was bad before this.
Major nastyness all around. I'm glad there weren't any initial fatalities, but I'm honestly more concerned with the prospect of a layer of heavy oil over EVERYTHING under that cloud and what that will do to the health of the greater region.
-
These last two pics looks extremely nasty. :(
-
They're designed to.
