Title: Last survivor of 1914 truce dies...
Post by: Flipside on December 13, 2005, 04:42:07 am
Well, he actually died a couple of weeks ago but HLP was down, and, since it's close to Christmas, I thought I'd mention it...

Odd fact is that a lot of people go through life believing that the 1914 truce was 'urban myth'. I wonder if the British forces at Basra will get a game of football going? They usually try to get a football game going at christmas if they are out of the country, it's kind of a tradition since this.

George: Yes, that's right. I'd just arrived and we had that wonderful Christmas truce. Do you remember, sir? We could hear "Silent Night" drifting across the still, clear air of No Man's Land. And then they came, the Germans, emerging out of the freezing night mist, calling to us, and we clambered up over the top and went to meet them.

Edmund: Both sides advanced more during one Christmas piss-up than they   managed in the next two-and-a-half years of war.

Baldrick: Do you remember the football match?

Edmund: Remember it? How could I forget it? I was never offside! I could not believe that decision!

 You do have to wonder what the people who were actually present made of Blackadder's take on the matter :D

He certainly had a good run - My own Grandad was also in the Black Watch in WW1, and he died over 40 years ago...
