Title: Game runs UBER slow on Bleeding Edge Hardware
Post by: macrossmerrell on December 14, 2005, 04:24:48 pm
Hi All,

I have an AMD64 X2 system, 7800GTX PCI-E card, 2 GIG of RAM and a 500GB RAID array on Windows XP SP2. I've installed Freespace 2, the patch, and downloaded Open Freespace 3.6.7.  I'm running the latest nvidia drivers 81.95.

Anytime I launch the game (vanilla or the OF versions) it runs horribly slow.  Like when you select your pilot, the mouse movement is all blocky and almost impossible to use.  I managed to get into a training and the problem occurs in flight as well.

If I turn on OpenGl instead of Direct3D, the game responds a bit faster but in like 4 second bursts.  It works normal for 4 seconds, then pauses for a couple, then works, pauses, etc.  I've tried turning all the settings down, same thing.

Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks in advance!

Merrell

Run FS2, ALT-Tab out and press CTRL-ALT-Delete. Choose the Processes tab and right click on the FS2_Open process. Choose processor affinity and then make sure that only one box is ticked.

Leave task manager and go back to the game and see if everything is resolved.

IIRC this problem is caused by 3.6.7 not dealing well with dual processor/dual cores. It may have been fixed in more recent builds so downloading one of those may make the problem go away (Recent builds sub-forum/CVS builds thread).

Do the above once even if you do download a newer build though. It's nice to know if that was the cause of your problem for the next person who comes along with the same problem.

Go Macross!

*sings*

Maaaa-kuuu-ro!
By the way, I know it's not Macross, but you might want to check out the new Robotech mod on www.game-warden.com, or you can get the old one at www.robotechlan.com/freespace2 :)
