I think I just filled the cup.....
-
ohh, it's at 30k
-
I want it.
-
I still prefer block-Lego.
All this 'special pieces' stuff just seems like cheating to me.
-
Look at that guy.
He's so screwing your significant other.

you just can't get "traditional" stuff nowadays.
And I thought the Clone Fighter (quasi early x-wing) was cool.....
-
Look at that guy.
He's so screwing your significant other.
yeah, starwars and grown ups playin' with lego is always a hit with the no-tails... :p
-
Just show 'em a double-studded brick and their pants go down like an American presidents approval rating.
-
How much polygons? (Can't believe I said that)
-
The guy builds a insanely gigantic Star Destroyer from legos and names it Rebel Attack Cruiser :wtf:
-
*** As some of you have pointed out, we made a mistake on the name of this model. The model is actually called REPUBLIC ATTACK CRUISER (not Rebel Attack Cruiser). The certificate of authenticity does say the correct name of Republic Attack Cruiser. Sorry for the error!***
-
I'm hoping that the guy who buys it drops it on the floor right after opening the box. :p
-
That's so geeky even I want to beat him up.
-
I'm with the 'bring back normal lego' crowd though. If anything, they've actually reduced the amount of imagination required to build lego models these days because you are given parts that are obviously designed to be a particular object, that's never what Lego was about.
-
Yeah... I still get the Lego shop at home catalogue every holiday season and everything in there is pretty much Star Wars or Harry Potter... all the fun sets are pretty much gone, except for the one or two "classic" sets they sell every year as throwbacks from like the late '90s.
-
Yeah, Lego's motto used to be 'Learning through Play', these days it may as well be 'Profiting through Merchandising' :(
-
I lusted for a Model team Rally Van in my youth....

Amen, brutha!
I lusted for a Model team Rally Van in my youth....
Ditto.
-
Extremely cool, but $30k? :p
You know, I might have enough parts to make one of those things myself. :D
I lusted for a Model team Rally Van in my youth....
haha, so did I. Along with just about everything else in the catalogs. By now I have actually gotten most of the sets I always wanted from ebay. Just need to find two or three more things now.
I didn't get that particular one though, since the Magic Flash is a better version of the same thing.

The modern Lego selection is really a mixed bag. I also think that this brick specialization has become far too common in most sets, but on the other hand the current Technic sets are just as good as the old classics.
-
An awesome practical joke on the lucky bastard who buys that would be to ship him a box full of loose lego blocks and a note that says 'Some assembly required'... :p
-
It's glued together.
-
Technics really are good, but yea, a lot of legs are way too specialized right now :(
I hate to say this, but Megablocks are pretty good for just a giant box of random bricks at a very low price, even if they are lesser quality.
-
You can still get those Lego buckets for that purpose. There is one in the latest catalog that has 1000 odd pieces for $20. I tend to just buy bulk parts from Bricklink these days though, so I can get exactly what I want.
-
....what do you do with it?
-
With the pieces I buy? I make stuff. :p Like this:
-
Nice. :) Original Space Police-era-esque. I like it. :)
-
Looks cool, that one.
*Brings back fond memories...*

Legos actually make excellent stuff for doing 3D modelling concept work, particularly since I can't draw to save my life.

YES. I agree. It seems like a lot of legos these days are ALL special peices. Of course, you can't really build anything good without them... Let's just say you need limitations.

Thanks. It's actually supposed to be Unitron themed as far as the colors go, but I only have a couple of Unitron guys so I just put other factions' minifigs into it instead. The Unitron figures are quite hard to come by, even though that theme is one of the newer ones.

I don't mind specialized pieces if they actually serve a purpose, i.e. let you do something that cannot be done with generic bricks, but there are too many pieces that are either just molded combinations of existing bricks or have strange shapes that can only be connected to a handful of other pieces; some extreme examples are this (http://media.peeron.com/ldraw/images/7/30592.png) or this (http://media.peeron.com/ldraw/images/0/30249.png).
That being said, this issue has generally gotten a lot better in the last few years. The miniature sculpture things they recently came out are basically made entirely of generic bricks and are a good source of those things.
Legos actually make excellent stuff for doing 3D modelling concept work, particularly since I can't draw to save my life.
For that matter, I have always thought that some of the official Lego space designs would make great FS2 ships. The 6781 SP Striker is a good example.
-
Blacktron. The original and best.
-
31k for 35k pieces...not too shabby!
but I'm more into the affordable area of lego. They're re-making all the bad/earlier starwars models.
Such as!
The A-wing!

The B-wing! (oh yes...yes! YES!)

The Episode 5-6 Slave 1! (with IG-88!!)

The Tie Interceptor!
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/esr1979/StarWars2006/interceptor2.jpg
And of course, finish it with the big grand daddy of the UCS sets, this needs no introduction:

Lego rules...still...

Blacktron. The original and best.
NO! Exploriens FTW!
-
My favorite faction was probably the first Space Police. Their sets were rather hit or miss (although the best space set ever made IMO was an SP1 set), but that black/blue/trans-red color scheme ruled.
Blacktron. The original and best.
One of my future plans is to build a fairly large Blacktron HQ. I got a second 6987 Message Intercept Base a while ago for this and have a lot of extra Blacktron guys since most of the Space Police 1 sets come with them as prisoners. :D Although I better finish the five or so things I'm working on right now before starting something else. :p
And of course, finish it with the big grand daddy of the UCS sets, this needs no introduction:
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/LegoGundam/Starwars2005/TheUCSDeathStar/ds_1_m.jpg
Somehow this looks a lot less imposing to me than the UCS Star Destroyer, at least in the catalog pictures. I think it's just the object they chose to model; the unfinished rear part makes it look kind of lame IMO. :p
Personally, I'm interested in the recently released 8421 Mobile Crane (http://www.brickset.com/search.aspx?query=8421). That thing looks far better than my older 8460 Pneumatic Crane Truck, which itself is an awesome set in its own right. I might pick this up at some point.
-
you know one of my favorite things was to get a model team kit make it then bash in a **** load of technic stuff, I managed to get the jeep with a fully opperational v8 engine, diferential drive, an electric motor, shocks on all four wheels, and the steering wheel still worked. that thing owned.
-
That's pretty much what model team was about, to a lesser extent. The only "engine" I ever had was an opposite twin from a Cessna type plane.
-

This style is actually fairly common for the Technic models that people post on Lugnet. It's the best of both worlds, although my Technic stuff generally turns out more conventional looking. One thing I have in mind though is to make a space themed terrerestrial vehicle with Technic functionality. It might even be possible to mod my MTron 6989 MCM so that it has an engine and a hand of god steering wheel.

Let me guess, 8836 Sky Ranger, right? :D

I have the second and fourth of those, and a few other Ice Planet sets. The first one, the 6973 DFD, is one thing I really want but don't have yet. Still waiting on a good ebay or Bricklink deal for that.

The SP Striker I mentioned earlier. I have two of these and the design is simply brilliant: (the box picture doesn't really do justice to it; maybe I can take a photo of the one I have built up)
The wings can fold and there is a control console inside that also lights up.

YES. I agree. It seems like a lot of legos these days are ALL special peices. Of course, you can't really build anything good without them... Let's just say you need limitations.
I don't it's so much needing limitations as needing imagination, the real joy of Lego is the same as the joy of modelling, art of any other sort of craftwork, and that's creating something that didn't exist before you pulled it out of your own mind. As you get older, you get less imagination, and need to see the detail, and emulate other peoples ideas, when you are younger, you don't need it. I think that's where the problem started, Lego bricks are as much as craft tool for older people as a toy for younger ones nowadays.
But I think theres something that appeals to the God complex in everyone to move your hand over the Lego box or computer or guitar and create something unique, that can never be matched by copying other peoples stuff.
-
I was pratically banned from buying lego when I was 13. You're too old, my mam and Dad would say.......
-
I just have about 1500+ basic pieces. My little brother just got some for X-Mas (we opened one early, kind of a tradition, lol), so he'll be set for a while.
-
I currently have 243 sets of different sizes, so I would guess that comes to out to roughly 120000 pieces. I've collected these over the years since I was 1 and never really lost interest in them, so my Lego stash has become fairly sizeable now.

I think I still have that entire set downstairs in a box. *runs and checks* Yep, I even have the bottom one like 9/10ths of the way finished. I liked this set the best too.
-
my favorates were the magnet ones of that same time.
-
The magnet guys would be MTron, although those came a few years before Ice Planet. I have their entire line. Their things seem to go surprisingly cheap on ebay considering how good the sets are, so I have multiple copies of some of their sets. The only problem is, the large quarter dome in my 6989 MCM (the big six wheeled vehicle with the crane) has two large smudges on it despite the fact that it was brand new. The box was pretty worn out and this piece wasn't in any bag, so I guess it must have gotten smashed up at some point, which sucks since this is a very rare and useful piece.
-
I always liked Mtron. Might have the recon jeep knocking about somewhere.
-
I think I still have that "Ice Planet Cruiser" somewhere, I really like its design...
-
Man... nostalgia planet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lego_Space). :) I loved all the Lego space sets, from the mid-80's grey nameless theme, to the Space Police (which rocked) and BlackTron (also supreme rockage), on to MTron (magnets! Nothing more need be said!). I think I dropped out of the Lego scene around when the Ice Planet came on to the scene, since I remember helping my bro put his together, but I had no interest in them.
I really liked the old-school train sets, too. And the Model Team - not that I ever had enough money for one of those babies. ;)

Ok, time for a trek back through nostalgia time for me:

I only ever owned the classic sets. Back in my day the guys in black suits were the coolest ones you could get!). I stopped just about the time that I was about willing to sell a kidney for the monorail set that had just come out :)

Had that one but this one (http://guide.lugnet.com/set/?q=6980_1&v=z) was one of the coolest one I ever owned. The whole front end could move on its own or act as a transporter for the lab section in the back.
This one (http://guide.lugnet.com/set/?q=6985_1&v=z) was cool for similar reasons. The two were the flagships of my fleet.
-
Ok, time for a trek back through nostalgia time for me:
I don't have some of the older ones except for the 6850 Mobile Rocket Transport, although I have at least one of everything you listed below the 6805 set. Maybe I should try to get some of those really old ones from the original 1979 classic space lineup.
Aside from the SP Striker, these are some others I really like. I have two copies of each of these since they all have great parts:
6915 Warp Wing Fighter (http://www.1000steine.com/~brickset/images/6915-1.jpg): newer set but excellent design, my second alltime favorite, looks a little like a Pyro GX
6894 Invader (http://www.1000steine.com/~brickset/images/6894-1.jpg): great overall small fighter
6923 Particle Ionizer (http://www.1000steine.com/~brickset/images/6923-1.jpg): unusual concept and has quite a few things packed into it
6958 Android Base (http://www.1000steine.com/~brickset/images/6958-1.jpg): very roomy and feature packed for the size and price and comes with a great AAA vehicle
6984 Galactic Mediator (http://www.1000steine.com/~brickset/images/6984-1.jpg): has some shortcomings but the overall shape is great
6939 Saucer Centurion (http://www.1000steine.com/~brickset/images/6939-1.jpg): very cool mechanism for unloading the rover
6987 Message Intercept Base (http://www.1000steine.com/~brickset/images/6987-1.jpg): the mother of space bases, has tons of stuff, although not quite perfect
6986 Mission Commander (http://www.1000steine.com/~brickset/images/6986-1.jpg): this one actually has a lot of flaws but it looks very cool and is an outstanding source of parts
I stopped just about the time that I was about willing to sell a kidney for the monorail set that had just come out
If you are talking about the Futuron 6990 set, I'm still really trying to acquire one of those. Problem is they go for close to $400 new on ebay these days. :( I might settle for the newer Unitron monorail, which is better in some ways and worse in other ways, although even that costs close to $300.
-

That's the one. I never owned any of the light and sound stuff as that also appear just as I was leaving. My sister had the town fire engine though IIRC as well as this (http://guide.lugnet.com/set/?q=6080_1&v=z) rather cool castle :)
-
My god, those bring back some memories. I haven't touched LEGO in years, but now I'm tempted to go dig it out of the basement again. I was especially fond of the castle sets, as I always have been a sucker for anything medieval-like... although the various spaceships and installations were a close second. I must've spent like half my childhood savings over several years just on those two types of LEGO :D
-
I basically went heavy on Space, Technic and Aquazone and have most of the sets they made from those themes, although I also have a lot of Town and Model Team things.
-
I had the blacktron base with the flashy LED segments, it was well cool (ahh, just found it, the Alpha Centuri Outpost). Had your favourite one too sandwich. The removable cell was great fun.
After that I got into Technic. Had a heavy crane, a pneumatic JCB and a rally car of sorts.

One of the things I'm working on right now is to improve that base, actually. The ship that comes with it is great but the base leaves something to be desired IMO. I make small modifications to almost all the official models I have built up, but some sets like this get larger changes.
After that I got into Technic. Had a heavy crane, a pneumatic JCB and a rally car of sorts.
Some more guesses: 8854 Power Crane, 8862 Backhoe Grader and uh, how big is the rally car? I can think of a couple of sets from that period that would match the description.

The best individual space-set. Ever. I want one.
