I'd prefer DVDs that actually retain data for more than six months.

Pfft. Scratches may be the worst enemy of CDRs for those who don't bother taking care of their CDs, but people like myself never have any problems of that variety. The real problem is that recordable discs have a lifetime significantly lower than a sick dog (i.e. a half-dozen years or so, if you're lucky). The recordable layer just loses it's recorded info after time. Therefore, making scratch-less discs, while it can't hurt, is sort of like reinforcing your windows against breaking and entering, while leaving a spare key under the mat. :doubt: Nice try, tho.

I have never had any problem with my CD-Rs at all, even ones that were written five years ago. RWs on the oher hand are quite a different matter.

Pff, bull****. I have CDR dating from when they first appeared, and they still work fine ( and that's more than 6 years ago if you ask me :doubt: )

Sorry, from what I hear, the problem is far more prevelant in the more recent CD-Rs. But I'd make sure all the data on those old CDs is still intact if I were you.

My 11 year old CDR's still work quite fine and all I did was put them in the box when I wouldn't use them.

What about writable DVDs? I ask as I've backed up documents and so on onto them that I may not need now - but would like to know they're safely backed up for the future.

I watch all my burned animes now and then, no problem up to today, but the day one of them won't work, I'll make sure to warn you :D
-checking: yup, burnt Rise of the Triad (rooooh, oldie :D) still works :P It's not even in a case :p

My take on it is that as far as you don't let your DVD take sunlight or humidity, they'll be fine.

You know, the drunken launcher in that was the coolest thing ever back then. :D
