Have you read about the changes in games (//"http://asia.cnn.com/2001/TECH/fun.games/09/18/attacks.videogames.ap/index.html") because of the attacks? Look at the inside of the RA2 box:

EDIT: Oops.... sorry 'bout that...

they shouldn't change games and games' boxes which are already released. This is antidating and it ticks me off. However, if the products have yet to be released its no problem.
Besides, why would they want to chage the Red Alert 2 box? It's in an alternate universe where the buildings still stand.
-
Well, I think the WTC still standing in that picture is a depressing reminder that it was destroyed so taking it out of the picture makes it better?
I'm not too sure on why it must be taken out at all.

Call me synical, I'm sure they are partly doing this so as to not offend people, but I imagine a small part of them is welcoming the massive free advertising the game is getting from this.

probably. You know the url www.worldtradecenter.com ("http://www.worldtradecenter.com") was bought 5 hours after it happened? So the guy would sell it again for a dunno how many times its price? Seems it didn't turn too ugly (the purpose of the site I mean)

When my little brother and I saw the crash into the Pentagon on TV, he said to me: "Hey, I remember when we destroyed that building!" - referring to a RA2 level... :-/

Sounds like a typical reaction- The little kids at my school, all of whom have seen hundreds of Asteroid and Godzilla spinoffs involving NY: "Cool!" (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/rolleyes.gif)
The RA2 box change changes nothing. The game still blows.

for all we know, THAT GAME MAY HAVE VERY WELL PUT THOSE IDEAS IN THE AFGHANSITINS HEADS Not only should we pursue bin ladin, but the RA2 creation team as well
-
We should pursue that team on general priciples. I mean, how many times are they going to release the SAME DAMN GAME! All they do between releases is add some new bitmaps and change the friggin box for crying out loud.

Thats ignorant of you and you know it. I sincerly hope you were attempting to make a joke (although illconcieved). First of all, not all Afganistans are terrorists...a small fraction of the population are terrorists. Most are the common person trying to eke out a living, unfortunately, the hostile climate and the near constant state of war in that country that has existed for eons makes it very difficult. Overgeneralizations like the one you just displayed are the basis for the racial violence that has been sweeping the United States, Canada, and probably other nations around the globe.
Red Alert 2 was designed along the concepts of fun and entertainment. The whole idea was to make the invasion of America a sort of comic thing. The game remains very light in theme despite the darker implications. They wanted people to identify with what was being fought for...which was a departure from Tiberian Suns desolate wastelands that you fought in. They succeeded at making an entertaining game in my opinion and I've spent many hours playing the game. I know some people detest the game and the series and I respect that opinion but the notion that a game like this "put the idea" in a terrorists head is not a reality.
People like Osama bin Laden...be he the mastermind behind the attack or not are in some ways very different than the common person. I very much doubt that he needed the inspiration of a computer game to help him plan his attacks.
If we're on the bandwagon of blaming the entertainment industry, heck, lets complain about Tom Clancy who wrote a bunch of books on terrorism and how about the book he wrote where terrorists try and crash a plane into the Capital Building. Lets blame every form of media that has suggested such ideas in the past and stop them from doing it in the future. Thats called a restriction on the freedom of expression and thats something that the Western world more or less stands to protect. Guidlines are based loosely on public acceptance and approval and it gives us the freedom to choose.
I ask you to consider your words before you act on them.
-
Let me point out that the changes that are going to be made in RA2 are purely to avoid offending anyone. For the many friends and relatives of poeple who lost their lives in the attacks, the World Trade Towers can easily become symbols of sorts - reminders of something horrible. It is that which is trying to be avoided here.

That'll probably be the same deal with Spiderman, too.
-
I remember when they reported that some of the terrorists responsible for the attacks may have used Microsoft Flight Simulator 98 (or 2000) to practice their suicide runs. The moment that aired some kid sitting next to me at school yelled out, "See! Videogames do incite violence! HAHA..."
Because of certain reasons involving mutual respect and other stuff, I didn't say what was on my mind at the time. But now that I'm on a private BB surrounded by people who won't report me, I'd just like to call that guy an "idiot".

Violence in games - bah. I never agreed with how violent games resulted in violent people in RLâ„¢. Confusion of cause and effect if you ask me.

2 things:
Bin Laden playing RA2... ... ... (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/lol.gif) (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/lol.gif) (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/lol.gif)
Flight simulator inciting to violence: sure! When you crash 10 times on that stupid chicago aiport, you want to break things (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) ( Btw, on a side note, I remember crashing against the WTC too (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif) Now I feel wrong... I need a cig. )

Red Alert 2 & Flight Sim 2000 can't actually be blamed, because they came out more than one year prior to the attacks...
Also, all European versions of RA2 don't actually have the WTC in the box art, just the Empire State & the Statue of Liberty (the Empire state is only partially scratched (a tiny fire, although this 'could' be misconstrued), and the Statues only affliction is the torch has a chunk out of it)...
I bet EA are also going to add disclaimers in all the new versions, especially since Yuri's revenge was delayed for changes...
Infact, i'm surprised Deus Ex hasn't been targeted, given that the cover-art shows the remains of the Statue & several sky-scrapers with holes in them...
Max Payne is also a viable target, especially for Chapter 3 & the final bit (nasty damage caused to AESIR corp. there (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/rolleyes.gif) )...
Dammit... shouldn't be saying this... could attract attention of desperate MSNBC reporters...

I just hope everyone doesn't go crazy changing things not to be offensive. I understand the box art for Yuri's Revenge...and EA basically said that distributors can return their current boxes for new ones or sell the old ones. But we can't just remove every reference of the WTC, thats more disrespectful if you ask me.

Actually, I have the European version. The picture I posted was a photo I took of the inside cover, the part of the box that opens up like a book.

Who here did NOT expect a big censorship run here? But I agree, it's ridiculous that they updated the box- if anything, it makes them look like they're doing it for accuracy's sake-and thus serving as a reminder that the WTC isn't there. I'd much rather seen a game box pretend to blow it up in the year 2500 than a box with the World Trade towers conscientiously whited out- one is an inoffensive cliche, the other is treating us like easily-upset mental patients.
-
Let's keep in mind that Einstein eliminated Hitler in the original Red Alert and therefore changing history. So they could be there when the Soviets invaded.

you've misunderstood this...
The new Red Alert 2 box doesn't feature ANY cityscape anymore, but simply a mocked radar image with a red filter over it (Yellow for Yuri's box-art)
